Hell or High Water. [2016]
View attachment 888664

Two brothers who scheme to rob banks. Excellent storyline and really well played by Chris pine/Ben Foster. Of course Jeff Bridges is always good.

It’s one of those more ‘low budget’ movies, but I feel like these are the types of movies that make the biggest impact without all the unnecessary CGI.
Decent movie, felt realistic to me. I had to laugh when the locals whipped out their guns and started shooting. The setting was Texas, but mostly filmed in New Mexico.

What is the verdict on Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)? I assumed blah, more of the same.

Two articles about it:
Seriously: how many times can the Terminator franchise recycle the same formula? Outside of Terminator Salvation, every movie in the series has revolved around protecting the saviour of humanity from a robotic assailant from the future.

It's very good. I enjoyed seeing it in the film. Why are you expecting film franchises to reinvent the wheel? There is only so much innovation, and it happens at a snail's pace. What you should be looking for is the strength of every piece of the movie when put together, and I dare say Dark Fate is the best Terminator movie since II.

I quite enjoyed the movie. It was well done and even without dialog, and just visual cues only, you could see a pattern emerging right away - financial hardship.

I did get a good laugh out of the T-bone diner scene. "What don't you want?"

As the critique of the movie says, how many times can you use the same formula before it gets stale? And compared to many franchises, this formula is very specific, the future Skynet keeps sending back terminators to attack those surrounding John Conner.

I’ll remind you that when SWs episode 7 relied on a recycled story, I was not happy at all. Franchises can move forward, but way too often Hollywood overly relies on milking a past success until it’s dry.

Now when TDF becomes available for streaming, I will watch it and report back.

As I said, it was a decent story, but here is my critique. While possible, some suspension of disbelief is required:
I was very surprised that one brother could get away with this crime. There were two brothers, there was two robbers, one of them was wounded, it looked like he was gut shot (a hole in his side, not a graze, yet he does not bleed to death or suffer the usual ramifications of being shot and recovers. $50k or so had been stolen, a substantial loan was paid off, finances would have revealed something fishy, and that a judge refused a subpoena of their finances where substantial sums of money were stolen.

I wonder if you walk into a casino with $30k, then gamble a bit and walk out with around $30k, is there a record of that, the casino would keep? Otherwise casinos would be the perfect way to launder cash.

I want to watch Downton Abbey the movie and have kept forgetting to check out iTunes to see what it goes for, so I wandered in there this morning. Got sticker shock over the buy price, rental also seems dumb since I would probably re-watch... reminded myself there are other things to do at the moment.

I saw Uncut Gems for a second time last night, and I loved it even more than the first time.
Crazy good editing and pacing in this film from start to finish. Excellent cast of creeps and innocents.
And Sandler, firing on all cylinders of insanity. Fantastic.

How much to rent and buy?

Watched Moana for the trillionth time last night. Like the rock, the music and the fact that even though there is a bad girl, she's just to good girl who wants her heart back, and everything is good again in the end with lots of people having grown.

I was channel surfing yesterday evening and was pretty surprised when I landed on a movie just starting. I had no idea Kindergarten Cop has a "sequel". The Arnie flick obviously being a classic, and well, one for the ages, it never really occured to me that greedy studio execs might want to cash in on the premise. Well it seems they have, this time with Dolph Lundgren as the, obviously, most suitable FBI agent to go undercover in... Something that educates children. Could have been a kindergarten, I seem to have missed that bit. There were kids, I think that's enough considering the premise.

As to the plot? So there was a guy teaching at the kindergarten (I think he died early on in the movie..?), and then there was something about a flash drive, I think Eastern European bad guys, a rather nice poem about a guinea pig, and then there's Dolph. A chiseled, tough FBI agent thrown straight in to the deep end, much like Arnie some 25 years ago, overcoming several obstacles as he has to both navigate the nurturing environment of early education and at the same time present a formidable foe to the bad guys who, I think, had some sort a motive for wishing ill upon Dolph. It was all quite confusing, really.

Not one I'll be watching again any time soon, but at the same time it's sort of amusing to know this exists.

Also rewatched Ex Machina as I finally received the disc. Still fantastic.

Post dialogue after they order the T-Bone/potato after dealing with the old waitress:

Jeff Bridges:

Well, I can tell you one thing, no one will rob this S.O.B....” 😁

Downton Abbey the 2019 movie at iTunes is $20 to buy, $6 to rent.

But the DVD is $18, blu-ray $15 at amazon. So the $20 seems pricey even if there are probably extras like there are sometimes now with digital... and those are usually on DVDs as well.

I dunno. I'm gonna wait awhile.

$6 to rent is about twice what it should be.

We saw it at the theater. Would rent, but not buy. For anyone not familiar, the movie is only for those vested in the TV Series.

Planning to do the Lord of the Rings marathon this weekend with the wife. Can't believe it's been almost 20 years ago since I saw the first movie in the theatre. Now we are living in a streaming world!

Hope you are watching the extended versions.

One of the few movie adaptation that is better than the book.

All this Middle Earth talk in a neighboring thread has me thinking along the same lines. :)

I might not say better, but for all intents and purposes just as good because of the telling accompanied by the awesome visuals. Let’s just not include The Hobbit movies in the discussion of movies being as good as the book. ;)

My sis asked me to go see Bad Boys For Life with her last night, so I reluctantly went- I never saw the 2nd film, but this was better than the first! Martin Lawrence is pretty hilarious the entire time. I didn't enjoy Will Smith (his character is an ******). For a throwback actioner, this was overall not bad- one of its best qualities is that you can always tell what is going on with the action. It exceeded my expectations (but I'm not sure I'll remember it a week from now).

Looking forward to watching this with my brothers. We saw the previous two in the theatres and we always catch the Fast and Furious movies too. It's just easy mindless entertainment as an escape from our old married lives! ;)

Life of the Party. 5.6/10 on IMDB. I think that's fair. It was okay, with some funny parts.
