I was just thinking of this movie the other day. I can’t believe it’s from 2007. It’s a bit eerie to watch, Daniel Craig is always good, but the premise of the story is kind of unique how these ‘symptoms’ manifest once you fall asleep and turn into these ‘robotic-like aliens’ but resemble human life form. It’s decent watch, even if it falls flat in some areas.

Reminds me of The Body Snatchers, and Invaders from Mars. I’ve not seen it. :)

I haven’t watched ‘Bodysnatchers’, that one I might have to add in at some point. It’s not bad, and it’s not great. It’s one of those movies that if you’re not sure what to watch in your ‘lineup’ next, try it out, see what you think. It’s on the creepy side, but I think it’s worth watching at least once.

Contagion is where it's at, f***ing spooky, timely, terrific film (S. Soderberg), just featured in a podcast episode of The Rewatchables.

I said Contagion is the better film (vs. Outbreak), but I had only recently re-watched the former, so wanted to give Outbreak a comparison rewatch.

Hahaha, OMG, it's far worse than I remember, FFS, it's Wolfgang Peterson, I expected so much better (and remembered so much less bad ...), Das Boot? Air Force One?? The Perfect Storm??? Outbreak is a like a made-for-TV Michael Bay movie o_O :D

Hey, I love The Island and the first two (maybe 3rd) Transformer Movies. 👍 🥰

The one with Donald Sutherland is by far the best. It's still terrifying.

I’m taking a vacation day tomorrow...well... because I’m the boss.😁

I’ll turn it on and let you know what I think... Can’t believe I’ve never seen this one.

The original movies are retro-50s post nuclear, Cold War be-afraid movies. For Invaders from Mars you can almost see the zippers on the Martian’s suits. Body Snatchers holds up better today. :)

Mike Flanagan: Doctor Sleep (2019)

It wasn't bad. Actually is was pretty good. I've read The Shining a couple of times, haven't read the book this is based on. Nice little "tributes" to Kubrick's The Shining. Casting was pretty good, for me Rebecca Ferguson stole the show and all the scenes she was in. The True Knot were an interesting bunch, and that one scene with them "doing their thing" was surprisingly disturbing.

Again, and this seems to be a pretty constant thing nowadays, the film didn't need to be two and a half hours long, it could have maybe benefitted from some trimming. But be that as it may, Flanagan really knows his stuff, and I quite like his style.

Watched Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

It was released last year but in very few theaters. I think it's a masterpiece. A Criterion edition will come out in June.

Synopsis:
France, 1770. Marianne, a painter, is commissioned to do the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent. Héloïse is a reluctant bride to be and Marianne must paint her without her knowing. She observes her by day, to paint her secretly.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001)-

I remember about 1997, catching wind of this buzz about a novel out of the UK concerning a boy who is a wizard. And it just so happened, that one of my wife’s best friends is English who lived up the street, and her kids were sure to have a copy, which they let me borrow. :) And from there, well I had to read the series and watch all the movies.

This movie which introduces the story is quite good, starting relatively innocently, even though there is a bad wizard the story circles around. Perfect armosphere, music, and intriguing magic. The Director gets good performances out of the children. In hindsight the series has quite an arc from being a kids story to being very adult and dark. It’s rather brilliant that the kids watching this got to grow up with the series, and the adults just got older. 😆

I soon became aware that the book in the UK was the Philosopher’s Stone, and I assume in the movie for every scene that mentioned it, they would have had to film that twice to use the appropriate name for the Europe vs the US version of the film? I’ve not researched that.

Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets (2002)- Probably my favorite movie of this series, the kids were more mature with better performances, got to visit the Weasles and enjoyable watching a younger Maggie Smith. :)

Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)- The brilliant third movie of this series proved it had legs, including a perfect time travel sequence.

A semi-docu, semi-"road movie", "Piotr Anderszewski: Unquiet Traveller." It's about pianist and composer Piotr Anderszewski (who sometimes also conducts in his recordings of piano concertos). Very fun with snippets of his practicing, rehearsals, performances and just riffing examples at the piano while commenting on the composers he plays most often or cares most about. Part of the film is of his by-train trip across his native Poland, with a grand piano along for the ride! Some background on his childhood and education. In French and English but w/ English subtitles throughout via iTunes. It has been available on Prime video, but not currently.

Two and half hours? That’s nothing. I watched the three hour director’s cut. I liked it. Wasn’t as great as the original of course but it had its moments.
