Side note: realized my spell checker didn't catch what I thought was a typo for nostalgic, but my mistake is actually this:

Nosologic -
1. The branch of medicine that deals with the classification of diseases. 2. A classification of diseases.

Not so much correct for my intended use, but pretty contextually applicable to 2020 ... o_O

I'm mostly known more for Horror and or SciFi, yet we all have guilty pleasures and what better a source - Rebecca...

Rebecca (2020)
1604355322060.png
The remake looks to build on the detail & lore of the original; expanding & explaining of which the film succeeds to some extents. The cast carries the film reasonably well, some moments feel a touch forced at times. Overall nothing major to complain about. Yet Rebecca 2020 fails to capture that certain "je ne sais quoi" the "lighting in a bottle" if you will that the original exudes so deeply to this very day. Rebecca (2020) is a solid watch for fans of the genre, faithfully & respectfully following the original with an added touch here and there, however lacks the sheer screen presence & thrill of the original.

There's a certain playfulness, yet a deeply disturbing undertone to Rebecca (1940) at the hand of the indomitable Alfred Hitchcock. Just the right amount of exposition, often presented visually. Similar to a good horror film or game the tension rises not due to what you see or know, rather more from what you surmise and feel internally. The 2020 remake is not a bad film by any means, the 1940 original a masterclass on so many levels.

TBH you should watch the original first. The less you know the better, go in blind simply watch and absorb. Then not only will you understand, you will feel Rebecca...

Captain Marvel (2019)- Working my way back though the Marvel Infinity Stone Saga. I designated this as the 2nd movie in this saga.

This movie is so good because of:
  • The Kree-Skrull conflict.
  • A Human interest, Skrull interest story of suffering and hope.
  • The misdirection and discovery in this story
  • The self discovery of the possession of pure power.
  • The origins and source of the Avengers name and the Avengers Initiative.
  • A young Nick Fury and Agent Coulson digitally created.
  • The creation of the most powerful Avenger, someone so powerful only a being equipped with one or more Infinity Stones could beat her.
My desire: To see the showdown between Kree, The Supreme Intelligence and Captain Marvel. It should be no contest.
Shut it off was so bad, just more studio money train garbage...

At what point did you shut if off? :)
Around a third or so in, if I remember just wasn't for me. TBH the endless superhero films have more than worn out their welcome, equally they make $$$ and that's all the studios care about today...

A good film will make you think, engage & challenge your expectations. Sadly Hollywood is near devoid of such capacity and thought. Being far more focused on reboots, remakes, personal agendas, cheap CGI, most of all a quick buck. Being both creatively and morally bankrupt...

Once I would have watched on the big screen by default. Today I only watch a film in the cinema if it impresses, as for the most part far too many are simply a waste of time & money...

Thor: The Dark World (2013)- Infinity Stone movie No.5. I liked Thor/Loki/Jane interaction, but the story was just ok. It did lead to Thor:Ragnarok. :)

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)- Infinity Stone movie No.6 featuring Shield, Hydra, minus the Infinitu Stone, featuring Capt America’s best buddy. Good story!

Russell Crowe‘s career really shocks me how much he has slumped, and this movie is even even more indicative of that. The movie itself works kinda, it’s about a man who experiences a ‘road rage‘ incident and takes revenge on a female who basically pissed him off, where he relentlessly doesn’t stop making her life a nightmare. There’s a few good scenes in this movie, but just falls flat nainly

Anyways, I streamed this movie and that’s about it all that it’s good for. Just on a quick sidenote—when I was watching the movie, I was really shocked to see how much weight Russell Crowe has racked on, this was a guy that was really in shape at one point and it’s staggering how much I didn’t even recognize him given his weight increase. He doesn’t look healthy at all in this movie.

But still, as much as Russell Crowe isn’t liked outside the movie industry, I still think he has some solid films and I wouldn’t judge him just based on this movie alone.

First time watching the director’s cut, and in HD! The special effects look a lot better than i remembered, which is weird. I really like this movie, and it has aged gracefully. Russell Crowe’s finest and most memorable performance? I think so.

Great story, script, performances, special effects and soundtrack.

Highly recommended!

Yup, I’ve mentioned this movie a few times. The soundtrack is by Hans Zimmer, probably the best musical composer in the Film industry. I have quite a few of his musical pieces on Apple Music.

As for Russell Crowe, just an amazing performance, it’s hard to believe this movie is 20 years ago. When you look at the level of detail that Gladiator included, there’s very few films that have matched or even surpassed the craftsmanship Ridley Scott was able to execute with shot scenery and the locations for filming.

I’m rather skeptical at times about certain movies, but I have nothing negative to say about that movie in the slightest. Brilliant film.

One of my all time favourite movies too. If I don’t know what to watch I put this on, super entertainment value each and every time.

I saw this in the theater last weekend for something to do and agree with your assessment with the movie as well as Crowe's weight - I thought he was John Goodman for a moment.

What were your thoughts on the movie?

The one scene I really liked, was when Russell Crowe‘s character showed up to the gas station when he was stalking her and he just sits there in his vehicle behind hers at the gas pump, and stares at her, that was probably one of the best scenes in the whole movie that I thought Russell Crowe did a great job of really portraying that ‘psycho-looking-stalker- look.

I ultimately thought it was just okay and maybe even bad --I enjoyed watching it but it wasn't worth the $12.00 I paid. I would have liked to see more of Crowe's character's backstory and what set him off. It seems the movie started while he was already in the middle of (or beginning?) his rampage with the killing/burning of those two people. Who were they and why did he do that? We got snippets via news casts about how he recently lost his job, etc.....but more details would have been nice.

Not worth theater admission, but certainly worth a look when it comes to a streaming service (or even a few bucks for rental).

Yeah, the beginning of the movie doesn’t give the viewer any idea why Russell Crowe character is the way he is, other than he has a lot of ‘internal rage’. The beginning of the movie shows him taking out his Ex-wife, [which I’m assuming has something to do with infidelity]. I think the premise of the movie probably has to be shortened and the director wants the viewer to know his character is a psycho and it doesn’t take much to set ‘him off’.

I’m actually surprised Russell Crowe even signed on for this movie, just being that it likely was never intended to be a ‘blockbuster‘. He’s been around in the industry long enough to know what it is successful and what it is not, and right away when I first heard of the movie, I had a feeling it was one of those movies that was gonna be kind of mediocre. And if you look at his past all the movies, he’s been in some major titles and this was not one of them.

Did they reveal that it was his ex-wife? Sounds right but for some reason I don't actually remember it.

I imagine Crowe did it for the cash but I was trying to find out how much he was paid for this movie and stumbled across this article. Apparently he liked the script.

The script didn’t openly say that it was his ex-wife, but when he shows up to the house in the beginning of the movie, and he waits by his truck before he barges in with the woman (Ex-wife) with another man living together, I think the director is assuming the viewer knows that’s his ex-wife or significant other. I suspect he obviously is bitter over a divorce or something to that affect.

I think with movies that doesn’t incorporate a lot of marketing, they ‘burn’ out really fast once it’s on DVD release, which is usually not the norm for Russell Crowe, who seemingly only signs on for movies that have a well-renowned directors and other notable supporting cast members. The bottom line, the second half of the movie turns ridiculous, which I kind of expected.

But it makes me wonder, Russell Crowe has more money than he knows what to do with and then signs on with a film like this? Nothing wrong with that, it just doesn’t seem like something he would do given his lengthy history of all his past successes.

If you enjoy slow paced horror/Sci-Fi Beyond the Black Rainbow might be just for you. Yet another highly polarising film that will either blow your mind or completely turn you off. Has a strong 70's vibe with a unique surreal visual style. Personally I enjoyed, as it's a film the makes you think, well beyond the confines of the screen...

It's not perfect by any means, yet remains to be a lot better than much of the spoon-fed garbage frequently served up these days. Films that make you think, who'd of thought....
