The Great Escape(1963)
First time watching this one. Great film with an outstanding cast. Pacing was slow and steady with the film coming in at just under 3hrs. I was in the mood for a WWII film and this one delivered.

My SO and I watched The Great Wall (2016) yesterday, as she was in the mood for some action. Apparently the Great Wall was build to keep out alien monsters, who would have thought?
It was slightly different than what I expected (I couldn't remeber it being about alien monsters), but not too much to deter from my expectations. Damon and Dafoe both seemed slightly out of place in it, perhaps because the writing really wasn't too interesting, so they didn't have much to work on. You have to wonder why they signed up for it in the first place. :p

Plot was shallow and really easy to predict (Except that Damon didn't make out with the female lead), effects were acceptable, and otherwise it was a pretty generic chinese production: Great looking sets, lots of play with colors, shadows and fog, a LOT of extras that were lined up in perfect rows and moved about in unison so it looked extremely artificial, and plenty of cliché characters that gave their lives for the greater good of the others.

Acceptable movie, but I won't be seeing that again for many years.

After that we were in the mood for something of higher quality, so we put on Serenity (2005) instead. If you haven't watched the Firefly series, you should do that. The writing, characters and setting is purely amazing, and Serenity is more of that, but with a slightly higher budget. They did the movie to round of the TV show somewhat, and while it didn't completely deliver with a satisfying closure to all the story threads from the show, the movie as a stand alone thing is quite solid. The writing, humor and acting is superb. Highly recommended!

No thanks to ever seeing The Great Wall again. Thought it was pretty poor.

Big thumbs up for Serenity though!

Lucy (2014)- Unlocking the potential of the human brain. Luc Besson takes this premise and runs with it, exciting, creative, visually intriguing and impressive. The only critique I’ve heard is that they could have done more at the end based on Lucy’s abilities, but with a character who is basically omnipotent, it can’t be just a straight up fight, because there would be no fight. It requires a different approach.

Wait? I guess I’m confused. “The only critique you’ve heard?”

...But you already watched and wrote about this film before last year, and now déjà vu. Is old age catching on you Huntn?😁

Yes, excellent WWII movie! Another one that is almost a classic is The Dirty Dozen:

I’ve watched this many times over. By far my favorite comedy in the 80s, [and one of my favorite comedies of all time, ranking right next to Dumb & Dumber.] Not really much to say here, directed by John Hughes, who also directed Home alone, Uncle buck, National Lampoons, etc.

Every actor in this movie is unique and has their own sense of satire. It’s just unfortunate we don’t see movies like this anymore. As much as the 80s were hated in what seems an identity crisis for that generation, there were some really bright spots in the film industry, and this was one of them.

Enjoy!

I’ll suggest that old age is catching up with you or is it a logic issue? ;) My previous comment is in line with my current comment and yes the only substantial critique I’ve heard about this movie is the ending. You can work on your sense of humor too. :)

I enjoyed Lucy - decent movie 👍 I agree it's a bit "far fetched" but it's a well done movie - have watched a quite few times mostly on planes and in hotels LOL - as was traveling frequently in 2015 / 2016 - back in the good old days before Covid-19 - 😷

My favorite Favorite Luc Besson is "Léon: The Professional" 👍 and one of my "all time" favortite movies - might have to put it on the Christmas List along with "Die Hard"

I’ll look for that. Lucy was a competently told story with outstanding visuals, but the Valerian movie, was ehh.

Luc Besson movies are usually fairly good and/or fun. Just watched "Anna" without initially knowing it was one of his, but started getting a feeling about it as I was watching it, which was confirmed when the credits rolled.

The Dirty Dozen(1967)
Another first viewing for me(after watching The Great Escape(1963)). And another outstanding WWII film with a great cast. Charles Bronson was in both.

Gotta say i really like the “style” of films from that era; a focus on the fundamentals with a more “theatrical” production.

I’ll take the blame for that post, (sometimes text isn’t always well conveyed but over the Internet). I wasn’t really indicating so much about the ending, more or less that you wrote about ‘Lucy’ last year and maybe you forgot it, being that you posted about it again. That’s why I was poking at your age that it was ‘catching up to you’.

More or less, I know I razz you sometimes, but you always handle things so well and I appreciate your posts on here. I can be a real smart azz sometimes. 😁 (Its in my nature.)

Mad Max Fury Road (2015)- Basic, but good story which offers the premise for a 70 minute amazingly choreographed visual spectacle of bad ass vehicles and action.

Wikepedia quote:
The film was praised by critics for its screenplay, Miller's direction, action sequences, score, cinematography, editing, costume design, visuals, and the performances of the cast, particularly Hardy and Theron. Considered one of the greatest action films of all time and one of the best of the 2010s, Fury Road won multiple directing and technical achievements, and received ten Academy Award nominations at the 88th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won the most awards of the ceremony with six awards for Costume Design, Production Design, Makeup and Hairstyling,

Huge fan of Mad Max.

Being this movie has been discussed multiple times in this thread, I mentioned before that Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy allegedly didn’t get along on set, but they work so well together, given their chemistry. But more than anything, just a great tribute to the original ‘Mad Max’ with Mel Gibson, Tom Hardy even wore the original jacket that Mel Gibson used in the 80’s version.

There’s Nothing I can say that hasn’t been said about that movie that was so well executed with the soundtrack, all the effects, casting, but I do have one request, that’s if they could make a ‘sequel’ (Or follow-up), that would’ve been awesome. But even so, there obviously would be the loss of some members that would not be reoccurring.
