Black Swan [2010]
57A986D1-BC1C-439E-86DC-CEB39116DCEC.jpeg

This was my first time watching ‘Black Swan’. I have no idea why I bypassed it all these years, but I was captivated every second for the entire two hours watching.

The plot basically surrounds a ballerina (Natalie Portman) Who devotes her entire life to crafting her passion as a dancer and once she lands the main role for a major lead, you see how her life unfolds when she deals with competition, the pressures of dealing with mental illness, life itself and her eccentric mother pushes the mental boundaries where Nina (Portman) starts to experience hallucinations. I can’t say more than that, as there’s so much that unfolds, but the entire movie cast was impressive, from Vincent Cassel and Mila Kunis.

I think it’s difficult sometimes to identify what type of movie can be, this one perfectly tethers a dark suspense and thriller. What’s even more interesting, Natalie Portman‘s character actually has minimal dialogue, she does more acting with her dancing, the use of facial expressions and body language to signal how much stress and pressure she’s under. Sometimes I think we [As an audience] always tend to look at actors based off lines, but there’s way more to acting from that standpoint.

On a different note, I can also say I have a new respect for dance/ballerinas. There’s so much choreography, strategy, The amount of physicality is amazing. It really is an art-form.

Anyways, killer movie.

Dragonslayer (1981)

Turns out I haven't watched this one before - I thought instead I was putting on what turned out to be Reign Of Fire (2002), so waddayaknow. :p

Really old school fantasy movie, with a wizard apprentice who has to kill a dragon. It is kind of weird, cliched, has plenty of bad acting, but it is cozy as classical fantasy movies are. Not a masterpiece by far, and extremely predictable. Best movie dragon I've seen though, short of Smaug, and great poster!

Edit: Aha, I wasn't too far off! From IMDBs trivia: "
According to sculptor Bill Basso, who worked on the 2002 post-apocalyptic fantasy movie Reign of Fire, the dragons featured in the film were designed as updated versions of Vermithrax, being rendered more robust and dinosaur-like. " 8)

This was the last time we saw James Gandolfini on the big screen, and I really liked his performance in this ‘mob style’ type movie that takes place in the Bronx, New York. Basically, the movie surrounds a robbery that goes bad, money is owed to a mob crew, and which of course, there are twists/turns in the film that I can’t mention here, but definitely worth a watch. Tom Hardy is always good.

I do have to say critically, I think the movie is a very s-l-o-w film that really never takes off, until you get to the end, the ending is totally worth it. But overall, some of the dialogue is clunky and there’s scenes that really could’ve been cut out, but in general, this is one of those movies that a lot of viewers probably haven’t heard of, but works for a -low budget money trafficking mob movie-.

Serenity [2019]

Of all the movies I’ve watched this year, this one took me by complete surprise, when I was expecting one thing and then it turned into another, all in a good way. Both Matthew McConaughey and Ann Hathaway do a great job, it also has Jason Clarke and Dijimon Hinsou for supporting actors.

There’s nothing I can say about this movie, other than I will just put the plot in quotations below, because anything I say, would give it away the mid-point spoiler. It’s really that good if you can look past the twist and turns, which just switches gears on a whole new perspective. It’s too bad this movie didn’t get the recognition it deserved, I enjoyed every second.

Plot:

Baker Dill is a fishing boat captain who leads tours off of the tranquil enclave of Plymouth Island. His peaceful life is soon shattered when his ex-wife Karen tracks him down. Desperate for help, Karen begs Baker to save her -- and their young son -- from her abusive husband. She wants him to take the brute out for a fishing excursion -- then throw him overboard to the sharks. Thrust back into a life that he wanted to forget, Baker now finds himself struggling to choose between right and wrong.”

It was filmed in Mauritius (An Island east of Madagascar), absolutely gorgeous scenery. To the point, where I am researching maybe even planning a future vacation there, as it’s also staged for tourism.

Hidden Figures.

Amazing the things humans had to go through, to get us where we are now. And improvements still need to be made...

As a space race fanatic, I loved the movie (book is MUCH better). Just for the record, the movie is quite inaccurate. Still a good show and a decent exploration of a very important subject, but still quite inaccurate.

OMG, Serenity is so bad, well, it still almost qualifies as so-bad-it's-good ...

To quote Pat Travers:

"And yet the ******* bonkers Serenity fails on every level, first as entertainment and then as a new-agey thumbsucker about a magical, mystical tour through the subconscious. Serenity finds new definitions of bad that almost make the damn thing worth watching for its magnificent flameout."

The 12th Man (2017)- Alternate title: You’ll Never Feel Warm Again. The true WWII story of the lone Norwegian survivor of a failed saboteur mission to Norway on the run from the Germans trying to escape to Sweden with the help of inspired countrymen and women. Long and painful to watch, but it held my interest. Foreign language, turn the subtitles on.

Patriot Games(1992) & Clear and Present Danger(1994)
I don't know why i had not heard of or watched these two before, especially since i really liked The Hunt for Red October(1990) which is sort-of a prequel. Great early-90s action-thriller-espionage movies.

After reports about 'The Lord of the Rings' being available in 4K on Apple TV/iTunes, I decided to start watching the trilogy again.

I am onto the Two Towers now. Totally forgot how much I enjoyed this trilogy...

The extended versions are simply amazing. One of the few movie adaptations of a book that is better than the book.

Being it’s the Christmas season, I thought this would be a great film to recommend for a family gathering. Seriously, get your grandparents, grandkids, children together and surround yourself to enjoy this heartfelt family Christmas movie with Billy Bob Thornton. I can’t think of a more apt Christmas fun-family-movie to recommend.

Enjoy!

[One of my all-time favorite holiday movies, I’ve lost count how many times I’ve watched this, pure comedy.]

Holidate. Decent, yet low-rated rom-com.

My family is watching the Home Alone series, they're on the 2nd. I can't take them. At all.

Has anyone watched ‘Tenet’ Directed by Christopher Nolan? I might put that one on later, but haven’t heard too much feedback.

Available 15 Dec?

Thanks. It had a brief release here in my area back in mid August, when theaters were starting just to re-open, [before they re-closed again.] I don’t know anyone that has watched it other than reading some reviews. I’m surprised they didn’t push Tenet to 2021, given that Christopher Nolan films are usually major box office successes, but obviously the pandemic snuffed this film to the wayside. This was one film I wanted to see in theaters, but obviously I didn’t given the circumstances.
