Warrior [2011]

I honestly don’t care for fighting or boxing movies. It’s the same cliché material with the same type of narrative with an unforeseen victory that the main protagonist overcomes because of life’s hardships or something related. Am I right?

The only thing that draws me in any type of fighting movie, is how good the actors are or how well they are known. I only tuned into this one because of Tom Hardy, who I really respect. The narrative portrays two brothers, who both live very different lifestyles, and one of the brothers (Joel Edgerton) desperately needs money to keep his house, and he ‘fights’ his way to the top to face his own brother for the prize money.

It’s a really straightforward movie, there’s no real major plot twist. It’s also very brutal and raw, showing you the ‘struggle is real’ for some people who will do anything for the financial sake to support their family. I really did like this movie, even though I genuinely think fighting movies are struggling to find that unique narrative, and this one pulls it off for the most part. There’s also a small appearance with Nick Nolte.

Anyways, as much as I like Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton was the main highlight in this movie, even though Tom Hardy seemingly has a more established name for himself in the film industry.

I'm with you. The only fight movie since Rocky 2 I've enjoyed watching is the series, KINGDOM. It's on Netflix. Excellent acting. Only 3 seasons, and it does have an ending (it wasn't just abruptly canceled).

Thanks for the info. I have a Netflix account, but I haven’t touched it. I find myself primarily just watching movies, as I never seem to commit to watching a series/seasons. And just like others, I enjoyed Rocky (Mostly all of them), and when you look some of these modern day ‘boxing’ movies, Rocky was the inspiration behind the boxing culture.

Which leads me to mention also, I really enjoyed ‘Creed’ I/II directed by Stallone with Michael Jordan. I actually thought those were really well done, some of the acting is kind of sub-par with some terrible script writing, but mainly solid films with great fighting choreography.

We have a Netflix account as well but same as you I rarely ever use it. I prefer getting digital downloaded copies of my media then watching it. I dislike streaming. Plus streaming is really not any faster for me now anyway. Ok a little.

My Dad loved the movie Rocky. Sadly he passed away in his early 40s.

I enjoyed this yesterday...Norwegian film...some intense scenes.

Mad Max Fury Road (2015)- Basic, but good story which offers the premise for a 70 minute amazingly choreographed visual spectacle of bad ass vehicles and action.

Wikepedia quote:
The film was praised by critics for its screenplay, Miller's direction, action sequences, score, cinematography, editing, costume design, visuals, and the performances of the cast, particularly Hardy and Theron. Considered one of the greatest action films of all time and one of the best of the 2010s, Fury Road won multiple directing and technical achievements, and received ten Academy Award nominations at the 88th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won the most awards of the ceremony with six awards for Costume Design, Production Design, Makeup and Hairstyling,

Didn’t care for this movie.

honestly, it was boring for me.
Mad Max was boring? (I’m asking rhetorically) If we’re being honest, that doesn’t make any sense (Also, being you didn’t elaborate). And if it’s on the topic of action/advent movies and nearly 90% entire film is action based, then I would question your definition of ‘boring’ for any film in that genre. I’m pretty critical on movies and I can’t come up with a single reason why that movie would be even remotely considered ‘boring’. I know I’m harping here, it almost seems like some people, when they ‘don’t like a movie’, they just incorrectly classify it as boring or some other adjective.

Either way, I respect your opinion, but I also entirely would say its inaccurate to describe/label Mad Max as boring, when that film is almost completely opposite anything of.

Not the original, mind you. I am talking about Fury Road. I just got bored to the point I stopped it after about 1 hour. First 15 minutes were cool, then it felt like action for action's sake and strangeness for strangeness sake. I don't really know how to describe it. However, notice that I said that it was boring for me; I am not saying it's a boring movie; lots of people loved it. I just couldn't get into it.

Agreed. Bad storyline, bad acting as well.

Right, I know we’re talking about ‘Fury Road’. I don’t see it as boring, but sometimes post apocalyptic sci-fi movies don’t click with others, that’s fine. And I totally realize you weren’t speaking for others, which is why I mentioned you specifically didn’t elaborate on boring. But nonetheless, it was largely popular for many reasons, but in comparison to the 80s film, vastly different for obvious reasons, I can see why some favor that version. Of course it’s a to ‘each their own’, but I was just prying.

No problem at all :) it's possible that I should give the movie another chance, it's not abnormal to not like a movie at first due to external circumstances (maybe I was just tired as heck).
I had a strange experience with IT - Part I (the new one). Watched the first time: loved it. Watched it a second time: fell asleep, bored. Watched it a third time: fell asleep, bored.
Go figure!

IT: Chapter 1 was great, ‘The losers club’ actors was some of the best acting I’ve watched from anyone in that age bracket, the plot, shot locations and directing style all flowed together seamlessly. It just wasn’t scary, that’s my only complaint.

IT: Chapter 2 was well put together, but fell flat for me with unneccesary side plot filler and over-use CGI (Way more CGI than the first film, which to me, even detracts away more from the ‘scary factor’.)

The Princess and the Frog (2009) and Winnie the Pooh (2011) - the last two cel animated feature films from Disney Animation Studios. My wife and I just finished watching every one (close to 50 of them).

I cannot recommend doing this enough, particularly if you combine it with some reading about the origin of Walt Disney's (good, evil and everything in between) animation empire. The stories, both on screen and off, are as captivating as the artwork and music, and you get to follow the evolution of style that set the cinematic tone for all of Hollywood over the last 100 years. Truly amazing ride.

I do agree that the kids acting was impressive to say the least.

Django (1966).

I remember seeing it as a kid, and being so amazed at how cool it was. And I have always had a soft spot for westerns, so I thought I'd see it again.

It is the Blu-ray version, scanned in 4K from the original film (If I interpreted the italian at the beginning correctly!), and most of it looks very nice, considering the age and budget. The english dubbed voices are... Quite awful, and does take a lot of quality out of the movie. Next time I'll see it with the original italien voices! Sets, costumes and score are all great though.

Slow moving plot, excellent characters, very grimey look - Good movie, but one that could have used a somewhat deeper plot.
