Blood Diamond (2006)

Top class action thriller with a high level of violence that's sadly all too relevant to the story. Strong performances by all and one worth watching.

Great movie with solid acting from the cast (Mixed with lots of satire in the right moments). Jennifer Connelly to me was what really made this movie successful. We never really got to see enough of her on the screen (Aside from ‘A Beautiful mind and ‘House of Sand and Fog’), but she is a very passionate actor, but the film plot was excellent here, and overall deserved the high rating it accrued.

@Relentless Power More of Jennifer Connelly in a dark & twisted Sci-Fi tale set in a neo noir atmosphere.

I haven’t watched it. I’ll put that in the backlog in my queue. Have you watched House of Sand and Fog with Ben Kingsley and Jennifer Connelly? Very dark movie, shows the values of ethical culture and life, but just a really well written script.

On the same lines, I recommend two other movies: The 13th Floor and eXistenZ. In my opinion eXistenZ is a forgotten masterpiece.

House of Sand and Fog plays out like a modern day Shakespearean tragedy. So well done. I haven’t seen it since it came out but I think about it often. Left a mark.

Tonight watching Attack of the Clones as part of an annual 10-day evening movie watching with friends and family in memory of a young Star Wars fan. Last year it was Marvel movies.

Wind River (2017)- Watched on Netflix. Jeremy Renner plays a wildlife officer who is asked to help an FBI agent (Elizabeth Olsen) who is out of her depth investigating a dead woman found out in the snow of the back country in Wind River Reservation, Wyoming. 👍 👍 👍

An entertaining WWII action/thriller with a stellar cast, overall a great yarn.

Since we are talking WWII, I’ll add:

Where Eagles Dare (1968)- Alistair Maclean story, the cinema version might be described as a little too slick, but I find it throughly enjoyable. :D A group of commandos parachutes behind German lines to rescue a captured allied general with sensitive knowledge about an upcoming military offensive. Includes plot surprises.

Honorable mention to:
  • The Longest Day
  • In Harms Way
  • Kelly’s Heroes
  • The Dirty Dozen
  • Guns Of Navarone (recently mentioned in thread)

Recently watched Candyman (1992) in view of the upcoming 2021 release of Candyman. The former is a genuinely good horror/thriller that very cleverly illustrates inequality and racial bias set in a dark & twisted contemporary horror story and to some extents breaks down boundaries. A film that immediately engages fans of the genre throughout the run of the film.

The 2021 release is well acted by solid players, yet is infected with Hollywood's overly heavy handed politicalising of modern day issues. The film fails to flow, at points near stalls. The horror factor is strongly outweighed by political undertone which by the second act is abundantly apparent. The 1992 film the antagonist was a feared urban legend, a killer of all, seeking revenge. The 2021 release Candyman comes across as little more than a vehicle of racial anger & revenge...

Candyman 2021 is well made and produced, yet lacks the intelligence & finesse of the 1992 release, nor remotely in the same class as a horror film. The film builds near zero tension throughout, it's predictably is telegraphed all too obviously. Had the writers and production team focused on the horror & story, not racial politics Candyman 2021 could have been a far better film as the roots of the story and cast are solid...

@Queen6

I like Jordan Peele as a Director, he has some unique horror films [‘Us’ and ‘Get Out’], but I think the whole script for Candyman is something that you really have to be drawn in to want to see it, because it’s such a different take on horror itself. I’ll add this one to the queue, maybe put it on around Halloween and see how it does. Thanks.

My recommendation it to watch the 1992, then then the 2021 release as they directly interlink...

The Knights of Badassdom (2013 Prime Video)- Well… If you like lots of D&D/Renaissance Festival jargon, by Renaissance Festival participants in a B movie accompanied by a weak plot of accidentally summoning a demon with R rated gore, you might still get a few laughs yet. :D

The Lost City of Z (2016)- Story of Percy Fawcett sent to South America to draw a boundary between countries, discovers artifacts of an ancient civilization, and an abbreviated chronicle his continuing attempts to find the City of Zed. This story feels historical, but ultimately it is grim, nothing that I would describe as memorable. You may enjoy it. :)

Large lost settlements since then have been found in the Amazon in the vicinity of where Fawcett was looking for his city. It has been speculated that disesase brought by Spanish Conquistadors may have caused the collapse of this civilization to re absorbed by the jungle.
