This movie was a total surprise. I purchased it on sale in order to see an earlier Chris Hemsworth film. Released in 2011 before he was a household name, the same year Thor was released. I'm not a fan of slasher movies so I didn't expect to like it. But it turned into something totally unexpected and unpredictable. Has elements from other genres (James Bond, Marvel, other slasher movies, Under the Dome ...) Creative.
I watched this a couple of times since it came out and still like it. It's a good movie, but I like horror/mystery movies in general. If you've enjoyed it, give "Tucker & Dale vs Evil" a try, I usually watch these two back to back.

Watching Dunkirk, finally, FINALLY, and true to my nature, I fixate on one character. More specifically, one actor.
And then I finally place him:

Mark Rylance, boat captain and tech extraordinaire. Was this movie so intense that I had to focus on putting a name to a face, give myself a distraction from the tension? Maybe, or maybe that’s just the way I am.
Either way, a good watch for both movies.

Watched CODA this evening with the family. It got a few oscar nods and so a clip of Emilia Jones singing Both Sides Now started making the rounds on Twitter. Joni Mitchell gave it high praise even. Anyway I knew I had to give it a view.
It’s really good. So well done on all fronts. Lots of humor to round out the drama. And then there’s the performance of Both Sides Now. It’s incredibly moving and is just brilliantly done. This is a feel good movie that I really needed.

Since the Oscars are close, did anyone like Power of the Dog (2021)?
If so why? I’m not against drama, but I did not like it, and won’t argue with anyone who calls the story a good one. I probably prefer him as Dr Strange. ;)

I was the same when I watched, I thought oh here we go another scary cabin in a remote area monster fest yawn. Never expected the direction it took and the dark humour in it. Loved the film, one of my favourites. Another favourite horror of mine is 13 Ghosts too.

On my favorites list for 2021. Likely Oscar contender.

See my post #17702. Nice that it got that many nominations. So many films just follow the standard Marvel, Star Wars, James Bond or whatever formulas without breaking any new ground. This one is not initially predictable, with excellent acting, characters who are complicated. It requires work to understand. You have to be into people - their joys, fears, hidden thoughts, motivations. Its all about figuring out how what the characters are feeling, what in their history made them who they are, what they will do. Too bad there are so few people who appreciate it. It's like the Grand Budapest Hotel - almost totally new.

"From this perspective, we get a sense of what the cast may never verbalize. It’s in the pained and panicked look on Rose’s face when she begins drinking after another round of Phil’s harassment. It’s in the steely glares Peter shoots Phil when he’s being picked on. It’s in George’s downward gazes at the floor, knowing he is helpless to stop his brother’s torments. It’s in the rage on Phil’s face as he realizes his tight-knit relationship with his brother is coming to an end"

A couple of friends and I watched this on Friday evening. It was the choice of the young man in our group:

It was a plotless, mindless action movie and it was an absolute blast. Daniel Radcliffe has certainly made interesting choices since Harry Potter and he's pretty great in all of them.

In light of the winter Olympics, I thought this film was apt.:D

The film is hilarious, it aged really well. John Candy really was in his ‘comedic prime’ here.

Power of the Dog- I’ve liked unhappy dramas before for the experience, can’t think of any at the moment, but I was just not in the mood to be dragged down and the ending was more of the same. When I think about movies and escapism this is not what I would choose to escape to. :)

usually, i see every Oscar nomination before the ceremonies, but this year has been tough
I read "Drive My Car" and did not think a movie would be made out of that Murikami short story,
that is what i would like to see!

No surprise here Bladerunner (1982), started a thread on it and will most likely watch Bladerunner 2049 today. :)

When you have a positive, emotional, enjoyable experience teleporting you away, watching a movie franchise, can you ever be happy when they turn it into a weekly TV series? Maybe, maybe not.

I did enjoy most of the Netflix Marvel series, some were really good such as Jessica Jones, The Punisher, and Daredevil, and only one of them, The Punisher had a previous movie I was vested in, The Punisher (2004) with Thomas Jane, but it kind of felt like a stand alone presentation. Jon Bernthal in some ways outdoes Thomas Jane if you are looking for grit.

Jessica Jones had a wonderful noir vibe. Netflix Daredevil was great, and it had been proceeded by a god aweful movie so a step up, not down. The Netflix versions were excellent, one of the keys here are avoiding 30 minute episodes, as I look at Disney and their continued trashing of StarWars (Yes, an arguable opinion :D)

I have not, is there any connection to the Thomas Jane version other than a character with the same name? Do they cover his back story in that movie or is it a sequel or sorts?

(Re)watched rigorously on Blu-Ray Disc

And how do you feel about Pt2 Quantum of Solice?

it is another version with the same character... But the movie is very intone with what Garth Ennis did on his run of the Punisher. Very graphic and very no-holds barred. Good stuff!

I actually haven't seen Pt2 yet. I am way behind in my James Bond movies. I loved Casino Royale...
