Personally I really liked The last Duel, not 100% historically accurate never the less films of this scale are rarely produced today. The differences in each of the protagonist's view points are both very subtle and brutally obvious.

TBH I think having an understanding of the real life event and the period helps a lot. For myself I kind like this arrangement. The film makes one think and delve into the history behind it then it gets deeper...

If nothing else The Last Duel is beautifully shot and an interesting watch in 2022. Those that enjoyed The Last Duel, should also watch The Kingdom of Heaven

Note: Directors Cut only as the studio butchered the theatrical release, resultantly the film was very difficult to follow. The directors intended film is a masterpiece on many levels...

But all 3 versions amounted to rape, so maybe this point is so subtle a viewer might miss it, that the real spectacle was that in 14th century, rape was not rape if you say you are in love, and the courts were so gender bias, if you are a woman you are in for an ordeal no matter what, just like today.

Yes nor do I condone, however the perspectives are very different;
  • One is about taking what you want and believing your rightfully entitled to do so, irrespective of others concerns or feelings.
  • One is about honour and needing to correct an act against what amounts to little more than property irrespective of personal cost to all concerned.
  • One is about being truthful, needing support only to be thrust literally into the fire once again (no pun intended).
It's all there, as said very subtle. Also helps if your interested in the real world event of the day being the last judicial duel conducted in France. The Last Duel captures the events pretty well given it's a film designed to entertain :) Not 100% accurate, nor wildly inaccurate.

I'm not a big fan of Matt Damon. I liked him in The Martian and to lesser extents Interstellar, that said his performance very much impressed me in the Last Duel. He really nailed the character, TBH all the actors did a great job. It's a very difficult subject to present in our time, let alone the period.

I don't generally watch films with such content, although there are some excellent films such as Nocturnal Animals. Can watch, not on the buy list as the content is not for me...

Great subtle points! In a trial about rape, I was originally thinking more in terms of was there a rape or not, did one perspective indicate no rape. From the standpoint of a trial about rape they all added up to the same thing. Now Matt Damon’s character did seem to take some offense because he loved his wife, but it could have been along the lines of hey, you rode my horse without permission! Honestly I’d have to watch it again, which I won’t. :)

Belle (2013)- Excellent historical 18th Century drama about the illigitimate daughter born of a slave in the West Indies and a noble officer from England. She is brought back to England, but does not comfortably fit in with English society and inherits a large sum of money becoming an heiress.

Without spoiling it, the story centers on her growing awareness of the status of her people of color, and the awareness, and moral adjustments of her family, her relationship with several suitors (overall framework is accurate, but some personal relationships in movie described as fictional on wiki), and leads to a hearing in the courts regarding the murder of slaves being shipped as cargo, for an insurance payoff.

Wanted (2008)- 9/10- Caveat, action that some would describe as exaggerated, unbelievable stunts. But this is in super-ability graphic novel territory where such skills exist. I enjoyed it, a coherent story, with a twist, and some nice CGI visuals. Again! :D

Action thriller, some people can speed up their reflexes by 400%, ignore pain, and make bullets arc in flight, members of an elite group of assassins (The Fraternity) who carry out assassinations based on the loom of prophecy, to maintain balance in the world.

Yes,, you heard that right, and Wesley a loser by modern standards…
is recruited into their ranks because he has special skills, and they have a insurmountable problem only he can help them with.

I have been watching (well, re-watching - and that is something I very rarely do) one of my favourite movies: Jesus of Montreal.

This is a powerful, brilliant, thoughtful, formidably intelligent, at times wonderfully funny and savagely satirical, and, at times profoundly moving, - superbly shot, exquisitely scripted, beautifully lit and magnificently acted movie with an impressive cast. And yes, the soundtrack is excellent, also.

Actually, I cannot recommend this movie highly enough.

The Last Duel (2021)- The wife of a knight accuses another knight of rape in 14th century France, we get to see the story told 3 times from the perspective of each primary character. Did the book do that I wonder? But all 3 stories basically confirm the same thing, then there is a trial where the character of the woman is assailed repeatedly. It’s a tough she said, he said trial without witnesses, and typical gender biases, then a brutal duel.

For myself, I did not seeing any great benefit of injecting these perspectives, I did not read the book and don’t know if the testimony of the trial was recorded in detail. And it’s not as if the 3 stories were significantly different and I did not feel it made the story more intriguing or artistically cutting edge because of it. Actually the perspective of the accused knight is rather peculiar for claiming his innocence if this was the testimony he actually gave at the trial.

I showed up unannounced, basically tricked/forced my way in, chased her all over the house, finally caught her, and despite her protestations, physically assaulted and forced myself on her… but it wasn’t rape because I’m madly in love with her! Maybe this was the point of the story? Why the court wanted to know if she experienced pleasure, because we all know that is the only way a woman can conceive… and she did conceive, maybe this was the real message of the movie, historical gender oppression …

The performances were good, Matt Damon’s character was really a disagreeable sort who seemed like he was devoted to his King but did not really get along with his peers. Adam Driver, Jodie Comer, Ben Affleck were excellent, but the story itself, the atmosphere felt oppressive… Ehh.

Updated, fixed some typos.
The Last Duel turned out to be one of the best film I watched last year. Matt Damon's acting was spectacular ?

This is currently on my local terrestrial TV so naturally I have to watch it.

A true classic SciFi. I also enjoyed the sequel they made.

Encounter (2021)- A father goes on a mission to save his sons from non-terrestrial threat. This is a good movie with good portrayals, a good story, but there is a 50-50 chance you won’t like the ending or you won’t like how this was sold, considering why you sat down to watch it.

The Selling (2011)- Description: A too honest for his own good real estate agent learns how frightening the housing market can be when he tries to flip a haunted house. Comedy Horror. Good laughs. ? :D

The Cabin in the Woods (2012) copy 2.jpg

This movie was a total surprise. I purchased it on sale in order to see an earlier Chris Hemsworth film. Released in 2011 before he was a household name, the same year Thor was released. I'm not a fan of slasher movies so I didn't expect to like it. But it turned into something totally unexpected and unpredictable. Has elements from other genres (James Bond, Marvel, other slasher movies, Under the Dome ...) Creative.
