Someone mentioned Avatar a while ago which caught my eye. Saw it in the theater when it came out, but now I have a nice 4K TV so I thought I would like to watch it again. Checked on Amazon and they had a special 3 BluRay disk set for $13! Movie was great to see again, but the bonus disk was really intriguing. They went into great detail on all the procedures on how Cameron shot the film. Incredible amount of work and technology. He used 4 or 5 different effects companies as well his own people. The Avatars were NOT animation, they were real actors. All their motion was performed by the actors. It was all done with performance motion techniques. First step was to make clay models each of the Avatar characters, then send them off to an effects company to be 3D scanned into computer files. The real actors wore special suits with buttons that the computers picked up. Faces had dots painted on in key spots. Each actor wore a head band with a special camera out in front of their faces to pick the expressions and lip movement. The digital shots were recorded and converted basic shapes of the Avatars. Then the 3D scans were applied to the basic shapes to produce the finished character. Incredible detail and realistic movements, because they were real! The bonus disk went through every aspect and production technique used.
One of the unique and fascinating innovations Cameron came up with was a special camera/monitor that he carried to give himself a real time look at how the final scene looked. In the studio all you saw were the actors moving around in there special attire, but the computers fed Cameron's camera/monitor with all the digital images completed, and it had motion sensors in it so when Cameron moved around the images on the monitor followed his POV. The Bonus disk was well worth the $13 by itself. Looking forward to sequels.
