Do you all just post any movie that you are watching that is worth mentioning? Or is there a genre preference or focus on any given day?
For the most part, yes. Anything I post is something I enjoyed and think someone else might as well.

As for what I watch, it's totally random. It depends on what I am in the mood for at the time.

I am at a point where I do not really enjoy modern movies anymore
I've been there for a while too. There is the occasional newerish movie that I'll watch and might enjoy. But, more often than not I am re-watching old favorites, or discovering old movies that I've not seen before.

Example, Apple's F1 movie. I'm an F1 fan and watch all the races, but the movie sucked and was totally predictable. The plot was thin as well as character development. Some scenes were rip off's of older racing movies.

yup, F1 for me got boring and I do avoid pretty much all of the Netflix, Prime "originals" too ...
we should probably revive the thread you started a few months ago

Ok...I'm just in a rut, I guess.

I found a thread on Reddit titled something like "What's the Best Movie You've Ever Seen" and there were a LOT of posts. I thought "A-ha! Here's where I can find a good movie to watch" and perused the entries. There were a lot of duplicates for movies I've already seen such as "Shawshank", "Godfather", "GoodFellas", and "Pulp Fiction." But there was one movie that showed up over and over that I'd never seen... "Interstellar". I looked it up on IMBD and the reviews were RAVING: "This is the best movie I've ever seen." Over and over again. I have to admit that Sci-Fi is NOT my genre, but how could I go wrong?

Three hours long and I really tried. I thought the acting was pretty good, but I DID. NOT. LIKE. IT. I went back afterwards and reread some reviews...people were falling all over themselves about this movie. I don't get it.

Another one bites the dust. 🤣

I've got a lot of books I haven't read, I think I should switch to that for a change.

Those of you who have seen "Interstellar", (which apparently is everyone but me)...did you love it?
here is the link I was talking about in my earlier post, they have several categories too like 100 thrills etc.
Not that you will just like them all, just something to peruse and try out

I recently watched:
- Philadelphia Story (I do that movie once a year or so)
- Star Trek The Motion Picture
- Predator Badlands

On my list to re-watch:
- The Thin Man ... I have seen the first 2, many times. I am trying to find the rest.
- His Girl Friday ... I have not watched that one in several years. Time for a rewatch.
- High Fidelity ... last week I overheard people having a conversation in which someone referenced "... that Ian guy". Instantly, that phrase brought to mind High Fidelity. This movie and John Cusak's Grosse Pointe Blank are two that I truly appreciate even though they are not great cinema at all. I just enjoy them for what they are. Along with His Girl Friday and Thin Man, these all seem to have a "screwball comedy" style of acting and scripting, which I really like when done well.
- Our Little Sister ... a beautiful and touching Japanese film about older siblings accepting an unknown little sister into the the family.
I really enjoyed High Fidelity. It is a fun movie and was a memorable date night for my wife and I when we were dating.

I just found or noticed this thread today. Happy to have found it.

Shocking that there are 936+ pages on it.

There was time that I enjoyed horror, thrillers, stupid comedies, and deep reflective films. Not so much anymore.

I still enjoy the occasional action flick, but I have not seen anything that is good in several years. Mostly, the movies I watch are sci-fi or Rom-Coms. Take my man-card for watching Rom-Coms. I am fortunate that I did not find this thread in Nov/Dec. I was head deep into sappy, predictable, poorly acted (mostly) Christmas movies on that "H" channel. I can't eat sugar any more. So instead, I watch that sappy "H" channel when I need a sugar rush. Which happens weekly. Sorry.

I'll close with this: I recently was talking to a few folks in a somewhat serious conversation - not about movies at all. I brought up the courtroom scene from "A Few Good Men" to highlight the framing of a certain issue. But then we marveled at Aaron Sorkin's ability to capture / write the issue in such a way that it is still a captivating and relevant gut punch nearly 35 years later.

So I will add "A Few Good Men" to my list of flicks to re-watch.

But if it is not a movie that I am watching, then I will binge a 6 / 8 / 10 ep TV show like it is a movie. Like Andor or Murderbot. That can be fun. But those are not movies and so are not germane to this thread. Soooo......

Thanks!

I do. Just kinda like journaling for me. Plus, conversations/discussions...

Some great films in that post by the way.

I found it really, really boring.

I do enjoy SciFi, probably above the average movie fan, but there are exceptions, and this one was just slow and pointless...

I also found Avatar (the first one, haven't seen the other two) visually stunning, but derivative, predictable and - well, also - boring.

Could also bring in another hot take: Inception was not a good movie, either. Again visually stunning, but pretentious and convoluted, and uninteresting.
Agreed.

Avatar wasn't any good IMHO either...

I liked Interstellar but SciFy is a favorite genre. In some ways it’s amazing, the circular (chicken or the egg) paradox, the Tesseract (whatever the mechanism is that reduces the very many dimensions into something we can picture), the price paid for traveling near the speed of light, the lying scientist who would imperil the future of humans for his own selfish survival. The worlds they visited were routine, but felt realistic, just other planets with nothing exotic about them other than 1000’ high waves on one of them. I do give it a thumbs up. 🙂

I humbly disagree, it was freaking amazing! Not so much for plot but for cinematography, excellent coreagraphed action, atmosphere, a cgi realistic visually stunning world, the narrative was good, spiritual elements, although my wife calls it Dances With Wolves in space. 😛 My proof? Highest grossing film in history! 😁

Avatar, amongst other things, is a film about predatory colonialism. I know of people who acted just like those in the film did.

As well, many of the visual aspects come from real places on earth. The floating mountains are based on an area in China, and many of the plants are based on tropical marine creatures. This is also true of Avatar 2, where much of the scenery is based on the New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea, where James Cameron has spent a bit of time, both above and below the water.

The Day After (1983)

In the mid-1980s, the U.S. is poised on the brink of nuclear war. This shadow looms over the residents of a small town in Kansas as they continue their daily lives. Dr. Russell Oakes maintains his busy schedule at the hospital, Denise Dahlberg prepares for her upcoming wedding, and Stephen Klein is deep in his graduate studies. When the unthinkable happens and the bombs come down, the town's residents are thrust into the horrors of nuclear winter.
