Well I guess I'm going to have to stop using IMDB to pick movies; I had another failure in my book:

"Don't Look Up" on Netflix with Dicaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, and Meryl Streep. Good cast, I thought. Movie is about a comet that is headed to earth in 6 months and Dicaprio and Lawrence are trying to inform the world and get them to take it seriously. I dozed off mid-way through but woke up to see the surprising ending. I don't know what I was expecting but not that.

Maybe someone else's cup of tea, but not mine.

I'll keep trying. 🤣

If you want to watch a mind-bending movie about a comet, watch “Coherence” (2013). It’s really low budget, but incredibly twisted. Just to give you an idea, the actors didn’t have a script; each one of them were told, separately, their generic story and the key point needed for the plot. They had to improvise most of their own dialogue and also the reaction to what the others did… and this is important for the development of the movie. You shall see!

I equally enjoy this movie, both the 1957 and 1997 versions.

12 Angry Men (1997)

During the trial of a man accused of his father's murder, a lone juror takes a stand against the guilty verdict handed down by the others as a result of their preconceptions and prejudices.

Filmed in Australia New Zealand and Canada. Fantastic scenery and a good film, actually made me want a sequel, bit like Battle Los Angelas really which I also like. Recommended for SciFi action fans, bit gruesome too with the injuries they get but it adds to the realism. On Netflix now.

Last night I watched "Bound" with Gena Gershon (fav), Jennifer Tilly, and Joe Pantoliano (who is one of those guys whose name might not be recognizable, but if you saw his face you'd know him).

It's another old favorite of mine...typical mob gets outsmarted and has their money stolen, this time by the women.

(If you are at all homophobic this is not a movie for you), otherwise entertaining and sexy.

Ok...I'm just in a rut, I guess.

I found a thread on Reddit titled something like "What's the Best Movie You've Ever Seen" and there were a LOT of posts. I thought "A-ha! Here's where I can find a good movie to watch" and perused the entries. There were a lot of duplicates for movies I've already seen such as "Shawshank", "Godfather", "GoodFellas", and "Pulp Fiction." But there was one movie that showed up over and over that I'd never seen... "Interstellar". I looked it up on IMBD and the reviews were RAVING: "This is the best movie I've ever seen." Over and over again. I have to admit that Sci-Fi is NOT my genre, but how could I go wrong?

Three hours long and I really tried. I thought the acting was pretty good, but I DID. NOT. LIKE. IT. I went back afterwards and reread some reviews...people were falling all over themselves about this movie. I don't get it.

Another one bites the dust. 🤣

I've got a lot of books I haven't read, I think I should switch to that for a change.

Those of you who have seen "Interstellar", (which apparently is everyone but me)...did you love it?

I enjoyed Interstellar very much.

If you use any AI programs like Claude, ChatGPT, et al., you can use it recommend movies. I do that occassionaly. For example here is a prompt I've used to find something watch.

List some gritty drama films from the 1980s and include the year of release.
Then it spit this out:
Here are some standout gritty dramas from the 1980s:

  • Blood Simple (1984)
  • At Close Range (1986)
  • Manhunter (1986)
  • River's Edge (1986)
  • Blue Velvet (1986)
  • Angel Heart (1987)
  • 8 Million Ways to Die (1986)
  • The Outsiders (1983)
  • Rumble Fish (1983)
  • Thief (1981)
  • Year of the Dragon (1985)
  • To Live and Die in L.A. (1985)
  • Colors (1988)
  • Hardcore (1979 — just outside the decade, but often grouped with early-80s tone)
  • True Confessions (1981)

Thief, To Live and Die in L.A., and Manhunter hit particularly hard on atmosphere. River's Edge is genuinely unsettling and underrated. You already know At Close Range well.

Want me to narrow this down by subgenre — crime, neo-noir, urban realism?

I found it really, really boring.

I do enjoy SciFi, probably above the average movie fan, but there are exceptions, and this one was just slow and pointless...

I also found Avatar (the first one, haven't seen the other two) visually stunning, but derivative, predictable and - well, also - boring.

Could also bring in another hot take: Inception was not a good movie, either. Again visually stunning, but pretentious and convoluted, and uninteresting.

Do you all just post any movie that you are watching that is worth mentioning? Or is there a genre preference or focus on any given day?

I recently watched:
- Philadelphia Story (I do that movie once a year or so)
- Star Trek The Motion Picture
- Predator Badlands

On my list to re-watch:
- The Thin Man ... I have seen the first 2, many times. I am trying to find the rest.
- His Girl Friday ... I have not watched that one in several years. Time for a rewatch.
- High Fidelity ... last week I overheard people having a conversation in which someone referenced "... that Ian guy". Instantly, that phrase brought to mind High Fidelity. This movie and John Cusak's Grosse Pointe Blank are two that I truly appreciate even though they are not great cinema at all. I just enjoy them for what they are. Along with His Girl Friday and Thin Man, these all seem to have a "screwball comedy" style of acting and scripting, which I really like when done well.
- Our Little Sister ... a beautiful and touching Japanese film about older siblings accepting an unknown little sister into the the family.

I liked Interstellar but I didn't love it. I own the disc and I didn't have to endure it in a theater, fortunately.

The ending seemed like a real cop-out and it was much longer than it should have been (or it should have been split up into 2 movies) and it's full of plot holes you could drive a starship through.

Re: other people liking it - some people are just idiots. They're free to like what they like, but I suspect many of them have never read a single science-fiction novel. The movie was good-looking and the acting was decent, but I don't think the Nolan brothers were quite up to the level of the greatest sci-fi writers.

Interstellar was bombastic, pedantic, repetitive, and belabored the obvious quite a bit to reach a mainstream audience.

Always trust your own thoughts over internet opinions.

I agree with you on Avatar mostly. The first one I enjoyed for what it was. But it is a long watch. I saw the second one and wasn't impressed. I think I fell asleep too. I don't have any interest in the third one.

Also agree with you on Inception. It didn't do anything for me.

Don't feel bad about not liking a movie that others do and gets high ratings, happens to me quite frequently 😉, as for interstellar, didn't like it either.
I am at a point where I do not really enjoy modern movies anymore, hence you can see in my posts in this thread a lot of old(er) ones.
when I get to my computer I'll post a link to "greatest movies of all times", that might be of interest...

Yea, exactly my feeling with Avatar, the 2nd one felt exactly like the first except in a water vs jungle setting, and I expect similar for the 3rd ;(
