The Day After (1983)

In the mid-1980s, the U.S. is poised on the brink of nuclear war. This shadow looms over the residents of a small town in Kansas as they continue their daily lives. Dr. Russell Oakes maintains his busy schedule at the hospital, Denise Dahlberg prepares for her upcoming wedding, and Stephen Klein is deep in his graduate studies. When the unthinkable happens and the bombs come down, the town's residents are thrust into the horrors of nuclear winter.

How old were you in 1983?
I graduated HS 1980, was 21 in 1983.
The military draft, aka selective service, was brought back by President Regan.

Seeing “The Day After” on prime time ABC television was a huge shock.

The context of the Cold War , we were living in fear of Nuclear war, this scared the $h1t outta so many people, me, my friends, family.

I was younger than you. From what I've seen Reagan had a pre-screening of this film and afterward he allegedly changed his view on using nuclear weapons, to a degree.

The shock factor and simulated realism was what the producers were after.

A great film overall. The artwork is substandard if you're an animation buff. But the voice acting, brilliant. If I could understand Danish, I would listen to this as a Podcast and be utterly mesmerized. Make no mistake, the story is the high point of the movie. It's so good that it carries the crude animation.
If there is a word to describe this movie it's cathartic. Keeping something bottled up for 20 years eats at you. Amin felt to the need to talk about the secret he's kept for the past 20+ years so that he can finally live his unburdened.

It's on my list now. For the record I really like that style of animation.

Frankenstein (2025)- After featured prominently at the Oscars, I kind of paid attention to it as my wife watched it, and I remembered on the first watch, I really disliked the basic premise of this story that “the creature” unlike the original story, for this version was turned into a super creature that can’t die. Because of that, turned off, I turned it off. Ok, well, this time I watched and it was ok, I felt some empathy for the creature, but I was still like, what’s the point of this story, why is it unkillable, so what was it’s purpose, that’s never established. Ok, if no purpose, is there a point? I still can’t recommend this. The original story made more sense to me.

I'm torn on this one. I suppose I'll eventually watch it ...

Kinda goes back to my other thread about older movies versus modern movies. Older ones are better for me more often than not.

Target Earth (1954)

Giant robots from Venus invade Chicago. Stranded in the deserted city are Frank and Nora (who has recently attempted suicide). They meet a celebrating couple at a café, Vicki Harris and Jim Wilson. The quartet escape the robot patrol and take refuge in a large hotel. There, they encounter a new danger in Davis, a psychopathic killer.

2026 Best Picture Nominees
  • Bugonia"
  • "F1"
  • "Frankenstein"
  • "Hamnet"
  • "Marty Supreme"
  • "One Battle After Another"
  • "The Secret Agent"
  • "Sentimental Value"
  • "Sinners"
  • "Train Dreams"
Yesterday I’d seen one just of these movies, Sinners which I liked. After its win, we watched One Battle After Another, centered on members of a “terrorist” group in modern America fighting the system, but mostly in the aftermath of a series of events. I found the story to be interesting, a reflection of today’s America, with some intriguing elements, good performances, .but overall it seemed to drag and I was not really drawn in.

Usually, if I’m not blown away by a Best Picture, it makes me wonder what wrong with movies these days. I mean it’s all subjective isn’t it? It also seems like DeCaprio has lost his edge, or maybe that was a good job of portraying a character? It’s interesting he is prominently displayed on most of the movie posters, but I think the other actors outshined him.

Watched Hamnet over 2 days..
Got 25 minutes in then urgent family matter stopped us… then a week later, last night, we watched from beginning.

8/10 for us, wife and I. Started out slow but we got engaged into it.
The ending resonated so strongly with me.
Watching in the basement HT helps , no distractions / sounds / light control.

I last read Hamlet .. 8th grade English
Time for a Hamlet in car podcast .
