The Day After (1983)
In the mid-1980s, the U.S. is poised on the brink of nuclear war. This shadow looms over the residents of a small town in Kansas as they continue their daily lives. Dr. Russell Oakes maintains his busy schedule at the hospital, Denise Dahlberg prepares for her upcoming wedding, and Stephen Klein is deep in his graduate studies. When the unthinkable happens and the bombs come down, the town's residents are thrust into the horrors of nuclear winter.

I was younger than you. From what I've seen Reagan had a pre-screening of this film and afterward he allegedly changed his view on using nuclear weapons, to a degree. How old were you in 1983?
I graduated HS 1980, was 21 in 1983.
The military draft, aka selective service, was brought back by President Regan.
Seeing “The Day After” on prime time ABC television was a huge shock.
The context of the Cold War , we were living in fear of Nuclear war, this scared the $h1t outta so many people, me, my friends, family.

A great film overall. The artwork is substandard if you're an animation buff. But the voice acting, brilliant. If I could understand Danish, I would listen to this as a Podcast and be utterly mesmerized. Make no mistake, the story is the high point of the movie. It's so good that it carries the crude animation.
If there is a word to describe this movie it's cathartic. Keeping something bottled up for 20 years eats at you. Amin felt to the need to talk about the secret he's kept for the past 20+ years so that he can finally live his unburdened.
I remember watching this on the big screen in the move theater when it was first released in 1967. I was 17 years old. Good movie.
Frankenstein (2025)- After featured prominently at the Oscars, I kind of paid attention to it as my wife watched it, and I remembered on the first watch, I really disliked the basic premise of this story that “the creature” unlike the original story, for this version was turned into a super creature that can’t die. Because of that, turned off, I turned it off. Ok, well, this time I watched and it was ok, I felt some empathy for the creature, but I was still like, what’s the point of this story, why is it unkillable, so what was it’s purpose, that’s never established. Ok, if no purpose, is there a point? I still can’t recommend this. The original story made more sense to me.

Kinda goes back to my other thread about older movies versus modern movies. Older ones are better for me more often than not.I'm torn on this one. I suppose I'll eventually watch it ...
That says it all, for me at least ...I still can’t recommend this. The original story made more sense to me.
Even Young Frankenstein… 🥰 which I originally saw in the theater 3 times before the days of home playing. That says it all, for me at least ...
2026 Best Picture Nominees
Yesterday I’d seen one just of these movies, Sinners which I liked. After its win, we watched One Battle After Another, centered on members of a “terrorist” group in modern America fighting the system, but mostly in the aftermath of a series of events. I found the story to be interesting, a reflection of today’s America, with some intriguing elements, but overall it seemed to drag and I was not really drawn in.

Usually, if I’m not blown away by a Best Picture, it makes me wonder what wrong with movies these days. I mean it’s all subjective isn’t it? It also seems like DeCaprio has lost his edge, or maybe that was a good job of portraying a character? It’s interesting he is prominently displayed on most of the movie posters, but I think the other actors outshined him.

I'm in the luv group for this movie."Interstellar".
