I've never seen any Argento / Giallo movies, but those you've mentioned plus Tenebre are long time members on my Amazon watchlist.

Saw Blue Valentine yesterday, worth watching and provides for a fine open ending, one can see that the director shot documentaries before. Very nice and intelligent person btw. Saw a discussion at some indie festival with the actors, producers and the director - what a charming bunch.

I much prefer Argento's gialli over his supernatural films. It's a toss up between Tenebre and Deep Red being my favorite Argento films. Tenebre is one of his most linear films as far as story. The whodunnit part is excellent. I really hope for a U.S. blu ray release eventually since the Anchor Bay dvds are going out of print.

Inferno is relentlessly frustrating, like Suspiria the core story is interesting but the execution lacked even more than Suspiria. And they are not scary films like the gialli. I can see why I've only seen this film twice. It promises so much and delivers very little.

They are available on BluRay in Europe, but quite 'expensive' (~ €20). A tad too much for me to just buy and surprise myself. I'm waiting almost two years for them to come down in price, but that seems unlikely, though. Probably I'll just order 1-2 now, since you make it sound worthwhile. And good that you've mentioned Deep Red, almost forgot about it. I became aware of it because of David Hemmings. So you'd recommend to start on gialli with Tenebre and Deep Red?

Last night I watched K-19: The Widowmaker with Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson.

I've seen it before but it's been a long time. I really liked it and provided it's accurate, or as accurate as it can be, it's an interesting look at the Soviet submarine service and their leadership. Of course we don't know how accurate it is and how many liberties Hollywood took with it. But nonetheless it was a good movie and had a decent ending in that the crew was able to get off the sub and not die as a whole in it.

I really can't afford to replace my multi-region player and more specifically the expensive region 2 blu rays (I hear Arrow's Blu Ray of Tenebre is not that good as far as color and such. Since that is in my Argento top 2 I can't see buying that.). I have the US Deep Red Blu, it is beautiful and both versions of the film are included (I prefer the shorter edit myself.)

David Hemmings is fabulous in Deep Red - you really believe him in the role and it is a very interesting character arc. I think he was my initial reason for watching that as well.

If you are new to Argento, I'd personally recommend starting with the gialli. Those are more linear in their plots and are both scary and fun. I find the supernatural films lacking save for their cinematography and music (in the case of Suspiria anyway).

Monsters u. Such a disappointment since I loved the first one. But even on its own, just not that funny or original. Nerds versus jocks...meh.

Just saw the Anchor Bay version of Profondo Rosso / Deep Red gets sold for €375 around here...the DVD!
Thinking of the Blue Underground US import Blu since there seems to be some problems with the Arrow one, like you mentioned. Do you happen to know if the Blue Underground version features both edits? Can't find it right now.

Also, just noticed that Udo Kier plays in Suspiria...I'm a huge sucker for Kier so would you say I should nevertheless stay away from that film or is he playing a major role so that would be worth a shot probably?

And could you please be so kind to state which version of Tenebrea you own or recommend? There is a French Blu available here, but it has its subs automatically always on, which I hate. Is the DVD alright quality wise? Thanks in advance!

Well watching a good sunday afternoon entertainer - The Expendables 2 - Awesome.

Totally tongue in cheek and over the top, full of cliche and sillyness! Wonderfully entertaining.

Watched Harper, a 60's detective story starring Paul Newman on TCM. I remember loving this movie when I was younger. Not as impressed today.

This week's Entertainment Weekly features the top 100 movies of all time (as well as top 100 TV shows, music albums, and novels). Granted, not everyone will agree on the magazine's choices, but it's a good start for someone who hasn't seen many of the classics.

There is actually another thread where this is being discussed, All Time Favorite Movies.

Saw World War Z today, Brad Pitt's character's global search for a cure. Good flick, revs up quickly, has several exciting visual sequences, but the climax ends on something of a whimper. I can still recommend it. My critique is that you've probably all ready seen some of the exciting visuals in the previews.

You could also wait to see it on your widescreen TV. :) I did not read the book. My understanding is that it uses the premise of the book, but that's about it.

While at the movie, I saw a preview for the Lone Ranger, the one with Johnny Depp. It reminded me of when I tried to watch Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter which had stylized action over the top which really made it hard for me to suspend disbelief. I got the very same feeling for the Lone Ranger. Unbelievable feats and characters enacting Superman...

I saw Despicable Me 2 at the cinema - it was brilliant. I know it is aimed at kids, but it was the best movie I have seen in a while. I saw it at an 8:30pm showing and there wasn't a child in the screen, yet at points the whole audience was laughing out loud. Really worth a watch! :D

Just watched BATTLESHIP (again) - cheesy but such a great action set.

handbrake turning a battleship - lol but enjoyable

(thats the problem with us science minded folks - you have to try switching it off while watching a film and remember its all make-beleive)....

Anyways now watching Lord Of The Rings again :)

I've not seen that particular flick yet, but I believe the term you are thinking of is called 'suspension of disbelief.' Or so I've heard anyway. ;) We need that to be able to enjoy a lot of science fiction films, but sometimes, the film is so far gone, that you just can't not disbelieve it for a couple of hours.

Just watched 1957 B-movie "Zero Hour". The claim to fame of this awful pot boiler is that "Airplane!" was based on this film. More than based..."Airplane!" is a scene for scene, almost line for line spoof of this movie. They didn't even change the Robert Hays' character's name...Stryker. The cockpit scene with the kid is hilarious, and one of the character actually uses the line..."I guess I picked the wrong time to quit smoking".

Having seen "Airplane!" multiple times, this film was even funnier because of the spoof...and it was pretty funny in itself. To say it was made on a shoestring is to insult shoestrings. If you enjoyed "Airplane", you really must see the "original"!

I enjoyed the first one. Can't wait to see this. :D
