That's still too much of an issue for me. Hence the reason why I use the Gillette Sensor Excel (I formerly used the Schick Xtreme 3 disposable razor until the price got too high even for a four-pack).
Sounds like you have very sensitive skin. I'm afraid I don't know of the best lighter razors and moderate blades. When I did use cartridges I liked the Schicks more. Cleaner cut and less irritation. Gillette used to be good a long time ago but it's pretty crap now. Gillette still makes blades for DE but they aren't remotely good, IMO.

I've never found anything that's as close as a Feather.

I've had decent luck with the Gillette blades I've tried. They're not top of the heap, but certainly usable.

I had a box of green 7'Oclocks, which I think are made in India. They are a nice mild blade and I've been meaning to get some more of them.

I also ran through a box of Silver Blues, which I think are Russian-made and if I'm not mistaken aren't made anymore. They were a bit more aggressive than the 7'Oclocks, but gave me a good shave.

Of course, everyone's face is different so what works for me may not work for you.

On the Gillette 7'Oclocks-I think the entire range is made in India, and the color denotes how "aggressive" the blade is. I don't know exactly which is which, though. As I said, I tried and liked greens, but they're all I had.

I haven't seen 7"OClocks in a long time. There was maybe a few boxes of them at a shave shop that's around the area but I haven't seen them since then. Silver Blues are still made AFAIK. On a shave board I know some people from Estonia and Poland that can still get them. Silver Blues will be more common in Europe than here, I imagine. It's funny you bring up mild and aggressive. I've always suspected Gillette to make regional blades based on the populace. In other words, it's based by major race. An East European will likely have coarser facial hair than a south Asian, for example.

I see a lot of Astras in shops which makes me wonder just how many people are buying Astras. People love them but I've had nothing but trouble every time I used them. The Silver Blues get faked a lot outside of Europe, so I suspect you're better off ordering direct from a seller there. I'm not that well informed on older stuff. My grandfathers were but they were gone long before I began being interested in them. Pretty sure most of the stuff they had is split between their children. My paternal had a thing for old bakelite stuff. Plenty of straight razors between both of them, some of which I'm sure were used to kill people during the war...

I generally like Muhle's products. Good heft, easy to handle with a wet hand, looks good. They all look more or less the same.

Interesting-I'll have to go hunting for some as I really like the box I had.

I just looked this morning, and for whatever reason I saved the box even though it's empty. Sure enough, it says "Made in St. Petersburg Russia" right on the side. Per Ancestry at least, I'm 90% or better Anglo-Saxon, and my face feels like a scouring pad if I go a day without shaving. I need a pretty stout blade, although proper prep(I usually shave in the shower, which helps to soften up facial hair) helps a whole lot.

I think my preferred Derbys are made in Turkey.

In any case, it seems like a lot of folks gravitate toward Astras as their low end blade of choice. I've tried both and even have a bunch of Astras in my blade stash(despite the fact that I've probably given away a half dozen 5 packs of them over the years). The do in a pinch-they're often what I grab if I find myself out of one of my preferred blades-but I like the Derbys MUCH better.

Hah, you just reminded me of Arko soap. I know people who've been aging logs of the stuff for years at a time, hanging in a dark closet. Like any animal based soap, it lasts longer when it's aged, and generally more mild smelling and lathers better.

I initially wasn't wild about Feather blades, which are high end blades at around 50¢ each, but tried them again after using a DE for a couple of years and realized that they really are a great blade. I have some put back that I use when I'm shaving for an important event, but I'm usually too asleep in the morning when I'm shaving to chance one :) .

I absolutely love Feather blades, but as you pointed out, they're pretty expensive. I bought a box of Astras - in my experience they're about 90-95% as good as Feathers, but a box of 100 set me back $8.90. That was about two years ago and I'm about halfway through the box.

Sensitive skin as well & Gillette is a great shave, very close but that is probably why I experience so much irritation (razor burn) with them. I like the shave they provide though.

I've had pretty good luck with the Sensor Excel razor (Gillette no longer makes the handle, but there are good third party handles available), mostly because the blades in the cartridge "float" with spring loading. As such, I get very close shaves with no irritation issues with a good shaving gel.

The Shick brand does that as well but the trimmer on the back is horrible.

For those who use disposable cartridges and mail service, which do you find to have the closest shave and best flexibility?

I'm a female and I shave certain parts, currently using DSC.

I have long preferred and used the Merker 34C 2-piece safety razor. It is short, heavy, balanced, and fits well in my hand. With Derby blades I can get a clean shave; I shave with the grain (direction of hair growth), across the grain, and against the grain for a really smooth feel. Although, I have for some months now just been using a hair clipper to leave a little scruff for a more rugged look.

The Braun electric I was not a fan of.
Switched back to my Gillette cartridge as that does a great job!

old fashioned double edge razor after I got tired of paying $4 a cartridge for Gillette Mach 4's.

100 blades off of Amazon set me back <$10 and I can get by a long time on them.

Its all relative

Um, from the TMI department... so do some of us. In fact, after the first time I sorta looked like a sickly leopard. I had tiny bits of tissue stuck everywhere. :( FML!

I go with the cheapest disposable razors. And generally prefer the ones they target towards women.

I can get them at Target (cheap store brand). Usually around $1 for 24 in a bag.

Each one will last about 2 to 3 months of daily shaving (actually, my current one has been in use for 5 months). And they have a little card inserted that can be used to expel hair from between the blades.

The women’s blades actually last longer than the men’s blades of the same brand and style.

So for $1 I get enough to last between 2 and 3 years on average.

I don’t use shaving cream. That’s pointless. I just stick my face under the water in the shower and let the water flow over the spot I’m shaving.

I get a smooth shave. And no irritation. And no cuts.

With shaving cream I’d always look like I got into a fight with a lawnmower.

Flowing water provides exactly enough lubrication without being too slippery.

So my shaving investment is almost as minimal as no expense. And it’s always a perfect shave. And absolutely no time. I shave in about 30 seconds and done. No messing with foams and such.

Of course, I’ve been doing it for 40+ years. So I don’t need visual aids and mirrors. I know where my face is. So a quick set of swipes in the shower and I’m done.

I don’t like investing extra bathing and hygiene time. 5 minutes a day is what I budget. Shower, shave, and if necessary a haircut (done with electric trimmer - smooth, even, and done).

Anything beyond 5 minutes and I’m wasting time.

I’m not a morning person. So I tend to sleep until 15 minutes before I need to be somewhere. I can get up, shower, shave, dress, and be out the door in 5 minutes. And I can be anywhere in town in 10 minutes. I know routes that have been forgotten as the town grew, there’s roads behind the town that drop in anywhere... no traffic.

The Gillette Sensor Excel series and Gillette Venus Extra Smooth (or Spa) work great in the lady bit areas. I won’t bother getting into why I know. But I will say I’m qualified to answer. Lol

The Sensor series is a Disposal cartridge head. The Venus series is a disposable handle / Head combination.

There is a store brand version of the Venus series at Target.

The Sensor series is my personal favorite. But more expensive than what I’ll spend on myself usually. But it is my favorite. Get the female blades. The male blades are interchangeable on the handle. But the female blades last longer.

And work great on face, legs, and lady bits, and well other bits too. Yes, I know.
