I just bought a safety razor, the Mercur 33C and I’ll probably use it first time tomorrow morning.

Before that, I’ve been using an almost top of the line Norelco for 2.5 years. It was top back then. And before that, it was Schick Hydros for about 10 years. Before that Norelco.

I don’t have the brush and all that, but I think I’ll be alright to start. I just can’t figure how I’ll store it after. I don’t want it resting on the blade. And I have a bit of Shave Secret left. It works ok with electric, I’m not sure how it’ll work with a blade.

Speaking of shavers, I recently got the Supply Classic Matte injector razor.

For a single-blade razor, it works surprisingly well, with an amazingly close shave. Even more so given I was using a widely available shave cream (Barbasol in my case). Yes, you do have to shave a bit more slowly, but it's not as finicky to use as a double-edge safety razor.

I get 5 O'Clock shadow by midday.

Braun Series 5. I don't have the time or patience to spend 84 minutes shaving in the morning, nor do I like cutting my face off.

No face, no beard. Problem solved. Time gained... infinite.

Dates lost... also infinite. Adding more time savings.

See... it’s a win, win. Lol

Braun series 7. Getting old and I see some kind of rusty like area. Might upgrade to the 9 instead when it’s time to buy a new head for this one.

For those who use disposable cartridges and mail service, which do you find to have the closest shave and best flexibility?

I'm a female and I shave certain parts, currently using DSC.
I always ask women when we happen to be talking about shaving if they knew them what they know now, would they have stared electrolysis on their legs/underarms when they were young. Would have taken a long time but after a bit... no more shaving!

I was using those Gillette 5 blade cartridge thingys with the regular and power handles, (I never noticed a diff between the two and the couple of power ones failed anyway) but decided they were too damn expensive. I had been getting them at Costco in the U.S, and that’s the cheapest I could find them. (I’m Canadian and Costco in the states has them on the big cards where they are ‘relatively’ inexpensive even compared to Costco at home)
A year or so ago Shick or Gillette offered a new disposable and they were handing them out at work. I ended up with about 20 in my locker. I liked them so I continued to buy them after my stash ran out. They come cheap, in bags of about 10. I always found the 5 blade cartridge ones wouldn’t get in places so I was using a disposable along with the cartridges every shave. What’s with that? I need both? Screw that. Anyway, I saw Harry’s in a U.S. Walmart last week but didn’t pay all that much attention. I’ll look better next visit.
What I used for years were those grey Bics with the two(?) blades and the metal bar. I loved those but they don’t make them anymore. I’m open to trying other systems, but the disposables I’m using now seem to work fine, but aside from getting into all locations, they are not quite as close and smooth as the Gillette Fusions, or whatever they call ‘em. I only shave every couple of days or so, so I see no point of a subscription gig. S

I saw a whole end cap for Harry's products at Target as well, prices are the same as direct, but the Dorco blades via Amazon are still cheaper (16 for ~$22), thought that's a 5-blade vs. a 4-blade (Dorco). You can also save a $1.10 on the 16 count if you sub through Amazon.

BTW, my current go to for shave cream is still Cremo, but now using the cooling version (blend of peppermint, menthol and tea tree oil), it's terrific, as good as any boutique product, and it's _cheap_.

Well I used the DE safety razor yesterday for the first time. I went with the grain and it wasn’t as close as I’d like. Against the grain and that cleaned it up. I used it with Van Der Hagen soothing shave gel, or something like that. It’s slippery and clear.

Maybe I didn’t have the angle right or was pressing too hard or light.

I’ll try again in a few days. I have an early meeting tomorrow morning and don’t want to experiment before it.

I've found with a DE I can't shave every day - there just isn't enough stubble left on the second day for the razor to cut it down any. At most, I'll shave three days a week now. But my experience is much the same as yours, I do one pass with the grain and one pass against, and it's as smooth as vodka.

This is my go-to razor. It's a bit on the hefty side, but I like the extra weight.

I made a few notes from following this thread. I will look at Harrys closer next time I’m in the U.S and look for Cremo and Van Der Hagen while I’m at it. S

Norelco on a regular basis, and for a straight edge I'll periodically use Gillette Sensor Excel. Every now and again I like to lather up, but what a waste of time.

Philips Oneblade

Battery operated shaver.
Has a 4-month disposable head that shaves really close in a similar way to a wet blade.
Very effective, quick and nowhere near as messy as a wet shave.

I use the Philips Norelco OneBlade and it is great if I let my facial hair grow out a little to much to just use a razor first. So I use the OneBlade to "trim" which gets super, super close anyway, then get in the shower, and then use the new Schick Hydro 5 Sense (Sensitive) with the "Shock Absorb Technology" which actually works amazingly well. Before I switched to the Schick Hydro 5 Sense, I used a Schick Hydro 3. I always thought 5 blades was overkill but this new Schick Hydro 5 Sense is amazing! I highly recommend it.

I also like that you can use the Philips Norelco OneBlade dry or wet, and with shaving cream if using it wet. The OneBlade is also great for doing a little "man-scaping."

I occasionally use a straight edge razor if I am shaving for an important event like a wedding or something. Gives the closest, best shave...just takes a long time!

I use Dr. Carver's Shave Butter from Dollar Shave Club, which I like a lot, and also Dr. Carver's Repair Serum which helps stop ingrown hairs, redness from shaving, and irritation from shaving. Other times I use old school Barbasol shaving cream for Sensitive Skin.

I was in the U.S. late last week. I picked up some Cremo at a Walmart and it’s great. I got some sort of mango/coconut blend. It does not show on their website. They had a couple of others; classic and bourbon I recall. I also saw Walmart also had a limited amount of Van der Hagen products on the shelves.
I am currently using some Gillette Sensor 3s but I still find them a little difficult to get in places which was my main reason to gravitate away from the ones with 5 blades. They just tend to have such large heads wrapped around the blades. I found these 3 blade disposable Sensors (green handle) available in quantity at Canadian Costcos so I may stick with them. (I did not find them at the US Costco I was in)
I have so many different shavers kicking around now that I’m set for ages. I think the plan might be to throw out anything I don’t like to narrow my choices down to one or two and then maybe try a couple suggested in this thread. Harry’s seems a reasonable bet but being 5 blades has me wanting to stay away. I wish those single blade, grey and white BICs were still on the market. I used those for ages. S

You could try a double edge safety razor. I’ve been using one for a few weeks and so far I like it.

I am getting fed up with shaving altogether though. But I really don’t have a choice.

I just looked at Cremo prices in Canada. I went to Amazon.ca. Absolutely insane!!!!! I paid $6USD for the Shave cream at a Walmart in WA state. Amazon.ca wanted.......wait for it........$25 CDN plus shipping. Ridiculous.

I bought a Merkur 3 piece, but wish I had got a 2 piece with a heavier handle. My handle is hollow. As for blades, I bought a 120 pack for $20. I’ve been using a blade for 2-4 shaves.

If you’re really interested watch some YouTube videos. I’ve been watching SinatraLenon, he doesn’t go in too much detail about the blade but talks about techniques and what products to use.

Before this, I was using an electric for 3 years.

Schick Extreme 3 here. I supposed it might be considered an old guy's razor, but that's what I am. :p

They must be doing something right, though. It's a pretty old model, they've been making it forever, yet you can still find it most places.

I've tried more than 3 blades and the more blades there are, the more the razor itself seems to get in the way.

Oh, and gel. Not shaving cream. Gel.

Umm, OK, so about the Mango - which I've used, and loved - the reason you didn't see it on the website is because you were looking in the wrong area ... I discovered a few months ago that the Mango, at least by their product design, is well ...

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

I never even thought about it (I used their Original product before), I picked it up in Target, in the "men's care" aisle, mango, awesome, moisturizing with aloe, terrific, packaging doesn't really have anything gender specific.

I don't even get it, other than, what? Tropical fruits are for the ladies? :D I'd totally buy it again! In fact, we still have some and I'm using it ... in the shower ... to, umm, keep my "Speedo line" clean :p

Currently the OneBlade Pro with the extension attachment, just to maintain a neat length on a short beard.

Back when I was shaving, though, I used a DE safety razor. I'd gotten a variety pack of blades from Amazon and have a couple of nice handles.

What I liked about it was the ritual of it. I would shave on a Sunday night, with a nicely lathered brush and some nice pre-shave oil and post-shave lotion.

I was always surprised to find that I would get a closer shave with one edge of the safety razor than I would with, like, the Mach 7 TurboFuzion Xtreme Komfort System (R) or whatever is ahead in the blade wars now. With a safety razor I would usually shave twice a week; any more would irritate.

If you have the time and the money, you can get laser hair removal. You can also get electrolysis done to thin out your beard but that takes even longer.

I’m still sold on electric shavers, because if you stay on top of it (shave daily) shaving is a faster, less messy process. I acknowledge the result is not as close, as in close shave, as using a blade.
