Actually after reading this thread I am starting to think it might not be a bad idea to get a bag like that for my trip this summer to Munich. I would need to get something a bit bigger though to old my 13inch MacBook, but it would be nice to have everything I could possibly need. My current notebook bag is huge, and not a good fit for taking everywhere.

The three basics that everybody seems to carry everywhere:
  • Keys: I hook mine to my belt loop with a carabiner. I'm hyper-paranoid about my keys, and after one incident where they slipped out of my pocket, I take no chances.
Me too. But I can't get the keys off & on a belt loop carabiner.
I was trying to wear it on the side where only one hand can get to it.

How do you work it with one hand?

Wow...i dont think much of that stuff is necessary unless ur going camping or out into the wild but if ur in the suburbs or city all day...no need.

Prob more stuff than any lady carries in their purse.

But are u really going to carry that all day every day?
or leave it in the trunk?

You seem to have overlooked the obvious:

- Chainsaw or crowbar in case there's a zombie invasion

Be prepared! :p

You're missing the ESSENTIALS of any man bag:

facial wash & scrub
Moisturizer
Hair Product/Gel (and not the cheap WalMart crap either)
Cologne (D&G, Givenchy, Issey Miyake, A&F, Gucci, etc.)
Nail Clippers and file
Cuticle Scissors
toothbrush and paste
a small bottle of mouth wash
change of underwear
additional shirt (and "T" if you wear one)

If this thread accompanies some pictures, that would be of help.:) I want to see how a survival kit is stuffed in a small bag. I think you need some skills to fit all the kit in the limited space.

Pretty well, actually; I can get the carbiner off my belt loop with one hand, usually. On...sometimes I have to look, especially when my shirttail is in the way.

Everyday bag:

  • PowerShot A1000 IS
  • 8 GB SD card
  • 10 AA batteries (in there right now. 2 in camera. Tends to go down as time passes)
  • 4 GB USB flash drive
  • LED flashlight

Laptop/camera/other stuff bag:

  • PowerBook
  • Apple 65 Watt power supply
  • PCMCIA SD card reader
  • USB CF reader
  • Ants (there has got to be one inside that PowerBook. They come in and out of the keyboard all the time. Squished 3 while typing this post)
  • 400 watt power inverter
  • Rebel XT
  • 28-80 mm lens
  • 2x batteries
  • 2x 1 GB CF card
  • 75-300 mm lens (broken currently)

Last 5 things in the camera bag if PB + PSU + inverter + card readers + ants are not needed

Ummm wow I don't think I have ever even used a good portion of that list.

I try and carry the most commonly used items with me, but I have a backpack packed with all sorts of good stuff that I try and take with me wherever I go, but leave it in the vehicle I am using.

Old Nike backback I've had for about 15 years filled with:
  • First aid kit, complete with gauze, small selection of hypodermics, and peroxide
  • Sunblock, small tube
  • Lib balm
  • deoderant
  • Para cord. 100' black.
  • Small tent spikes, 4
  • Small folding saw
  • Benchmade Nimravus fixed blade knife
  • Medium sized needle and heavy black thread
  • 8" Cresent wrench
  • Channel lock pliers
  • Wiha multi-tip insulated screwdriver
  • Klein diagonals and needle nose
  • 6' square tarp
  • Thermal emergency blanket
  • Road flares, 30 min, 4
  • 8oz beef jerky, granola bars
  • water purification tablets
  • waterproof matches
  • 750ml aluminum water bottle in side pocket
  • 1 box, 50rds of RA45T +P
  • Fenix TK11
  • 20 replacement CR123 batteries in otter box
  • Misc audio cables, adapters
  • Various power cables for cell phones, ect
  • USB, firewire, and ethernet cables of various types
  • And a few other bits and bobs I can't remember right now

I can handle pretty much any situation that would come up with the items in that bag, and I consider it a very very good investment.

You sir, are more of a man than I will ever hope to be :D

Road flares: check. Waterproof matches: check. Water purification tablets: check. Thermal energy blanket: check. 6' tarp: check. Folding saw: check.

Can't imagine carrying any of that in my daily man bag.

not to go way off topic, but isnt ones urine sterile to begin with? so its ok to drink if you did?

*shudders*

Temporarily, yes. No purification pills needed. The problem is the level of filtered impurities and toxins in your urine will increase every time it 'makes the loop' until you get no benefit from it after a couple of 'recyclings'. Purification tablets won't help that either.
