When I bought my iPad (I know, not quite the same), many of the Apple stores had crazy lines with people camping out from the wee hours of the morning but they started selling at 5pm. I rolled into Best Buy around 3:30, there were 10 people in line. I got my iPad around 5:15-5:20 and left :)

go at closing time, not opening

If you live in a place with a prominent Apple Store that's not in a tourist zone, it might pay to go at closing time instead of opening. These first-tiers stores will be mobbed at opening with long lines but likely won't sell out because they will get stocked very well by Apple because of their size and visibility. And because they're in residential neighborhoods that don't get a lot of tourist traffic, the stock won't be as taxed as they would be like the Fifth Avenue or Grand Central NYC stores would be. By nighttime, the lines will be gone and only area residents will be around so chances may be good the store will still have stock of the more popular models. This was my experience getting the iPhone 4 at the Upper West Side store in NYC. I stopped by in the morning and the wait was three hours so I left for work. On the way home at night, I dropped by again around 10pm and the store was busy with people but no lines and they still had AT&T black 16gb models. I walked in and out in 15 minutes. This is probably going to be my strategy again next week, along with checking places like Radio Shacks and Best Buys.

Apparently he resides in Philly. No way I'd be camping out that early myself but hey more power too ya! ;)

I'm actually in Boston for a couple of weeks so the flagship here tends to attract hundreds at every launch. I'm getting there early because I have something to do that morning.

I wouldn't even call it camping out if you only have to get there 2 hours early. Try the PS3 launch in 2007. People were out there 48 hours in advance.

Who's that cat that got all the attention in Dallas a couple of years ago for camping out? Did he proclaim himself an "internet celebrity"?

i went to the Dadeland store in Miami, FL for the iphone 4. I arrived at 5:30 am with a reservation. There were probably 200 people in front of me in the reservation line and another 200 in the no-reservation line. I was still out of the mall by about 9:30am (opening at 8am).

They were totally sold out by about 3pm.

The ipad 2 was sold out everywhere here in Miami for a long time. I got one at a Target after monitoring their inventory system for a week.

It isn't all about demand. It is about how much supply they have vs. the demand.

The 6 AM crew here is cracking me up.

If it's anything like the iPhone 4 launch, you'll be standing behind HUNDREDS of people and without a reservation are not likely to make it into the store before it closes.

Have fun.

I got to the store at 10 PM the night before the iPhone 4 launch and was 18th in the non-reserved line... Got the last walk-in iPhone 4.. . at 1 PM! Never again.

I am very thankful I am not one that HAS to be the first to have the newest and latest iPhone. The day of the iPhone 4 release, I went to the movie theatre, in the same strip as an Apple store and was amazed at the line wrapped around the building at 3 in the afternoon. All the people actually thought there would still be phones left. It was insane. In a couple months I'll be able to walk right into an Apple or Sprint store and walk out with my iPhone 5. No waiting. No camping.

In years past, with some of the previous iPhones, some people were camping out 3-4 days in advance. Not joking. Tents, sleeping bags, the whole 9 yards. If this phone is even more popular than those phones were, then you might wanna get there at least that early.

Never. I have a life. I can live without a new device for a couple weeks. My 4S was good enough two weeks ago, it'll still be good a few more weeks from now, until supplies are in stock.

Seriously, do people have nothing better to do? It's just a phone people. No one is going to give a darn in 3 weeks that you were the first in line a had it a few weeks before everyone else.

(and for the record, I've owned a iPhone 3G, 4, 4S and and iPad 2 & 3, and I'll probably buy the iP5 so save your Fandroid/hater comments)

meh.. i dont know.. there is something about having the device on day 1.. i ordered online.. so i wont be lining up.. but darn i do want to have it on day 1..

It's assumed that more people line up at Apple than AT&T right?

If we were to break it down into a ratio, what do you think it would be?

75/25? 80/20?

I know it varies by loctation. How much stock of the 16 black you think they'll have say at providence ri? I think for the iPad 3 they only had like 15 of each model.

lol thats where i plan on being

----------

Last year for 4s I just walked up to the store around 5pm on launch day and got one. No line, plenty of stock.

this is pretty much the plan for me here, the apple store near my house will literally have thousands on hand

Did they really do reservations this time around too?

I have $225 in AT&T gift cards from my birthday. I hope to go to an AT&T store on Friday to get one. I had planned on going around 10 am when the excitement died down.

I kept checking for an option to order online and pick-up on launch day, and it never appeared (the 3rd-gen iPad had such an option pop up at various times on pre-order day). I don't think they're doing reservations this time.

If I line up, I hope that Apple employees cheer me throughout my purchasing experience. :p

I have a feeling with this launch there will probably be enough to go around. I was going to pre-order but online it looks like I will have to wait 3 weeks. I'll just walk into a store.
