But can you opt out of it? Can you say "I don't want to set it up right now coz i'm in a rush and will do it later"?

According to the guy I spoke to it doesn't seem like it. At least not at my local Apple store. As long as you're doing an upgrade they do the activating in store. Obviously take it with a grain of salt cause we all know how unreliable reps can be.

What time do you guys plan to camp out in front of Apple store on 21st.. never tried that but might try this year for experiencing it.

Camping out to get a phone? What is wrong with people that they have to be the first to do/get everything. The amount of time wasted obsessing over Apple products is absolutely ludacris.

Apple employees actually make it fun. The biggest scare is not getting the one you want and settling for one just cause you waited. What takes the most time is them setting your phone up...would be nice if they just sold it to you and let you set it up yourself...and a separate line for those that need help.

So wait, they actually forcefully set the phone up before you buy it? And you can't opt out of it? That would explain why it takes so long at the damn stores.
They were setting up everybody's phones for them at the mall I went to for the 4 launch. It took FOREVER to move people through the line and into the store that way, especially when they started alternating walk-ins and people with reservations. Got there at a little before 5 am (they weren't allowing anyone on property before 5) and didn't leave until something like 12:30. It was insane.

The only time I waiting in line for the iPhone was when it first came out in 2007 and it wasn't even for me. I did it as a Father's Day gift for my dad and was first in line. It may seem stupid but it was pretty fun. Will I do it again? No, probably not, haha. But now they are on more carriers, you can preorder and there are other options available but then the only way to get them was that way. So I'd say if you want to do it and can take off work, go for it. But if you think it is stupid don't hate on the people that want to because if they want to do it for the experience than that is their right. :)

What is really sickening is the fact that people get upset over what other people do with their time.

Are you upset every time you hear about someone spending all day fishing, when they could be helping to stop world hunger? Or, when someone spends all day at an amusement park standing in 3hour lines to ride roller coasters, or when people go camping in the woods for no good plain reason?

Really, get a life and stop worrying about what other people do with theirs.

I live in Northeast Philadelphia and plan on getting to the store at 6 am and then straight to work from there. I am gonna go to Franklin Mills Mall where the local Sprint store is. Since it's a Sprint iPhone I am positive I will not have any problems. Maybe AT&T or Verizon, but def not Sprint.

But then they can't feel superior about themselves and arrogant that only things they find important and worthy doing are worthy. I mean fishing, that's so much more worthy... sitting around all day waiting for a fish to bite... that's soooo much more worthy. I can totally see why some one would not think that was a waste of time . And you're right, how shallow do you have to be to enjoy standing around at an amusement park, how childish!

See what I did there? You can make anything sound ridiculous if it's not something you are interested in. And BTW, I like fishing and amusement parks, I just ran with the examples given ;).

As a (top 5) line sitter at nearly every iPhone/iPad launch I can tell you, if you get there before 3, prepare to get escorted off the premises by security. Unless you're in a 24 hour city (lucky), a'course.

Show up around 5. Get some sleep. You'll get your phone.

I know I'll get my phone, that's not what I'm worried about. I need to be at least one of the first 15 people in line, because they open at 8 and I have work at 845, so I'm trying to be as close to the front of the line as possible.

it would be funny if it were like the ipad 3 release. mid day, day of release, and plenty in stock nearly everywhere that sells it.

the last iphone i got launch day was the original, and even then i went in the store around 7pm, no line (but plenty window shoppers), and grabbed 2.

this time i preordered since i work nights and was up at 3am anyway.

So, if I just roll into an Apple store around 9am, is there pretty much zero chance that I'll get one? I'll be passing through a town with an Apple store on my way somewhere that morning, but I don't want to camp out or fight a massive line. If you all think the odds are slim, I'll probably just not bother. I've never been to a iphone launch event before, so I really don't have any idea how many people tend to get served.

I casually walked into a nearby apple store (actually, it was closer to 2pm) on the original ipad launch day, and was able to get one. Wasn't even planning on buying one, but it was cool and I figured "why not?" Then again, I would think the iphones are a bit more popular...

Well I'm hoping to stand in line and get one for my daughter. I have one on order but it has 2 week delivery, so I hope to get one of Friday and cancel the original order. I plan on being in line around 6:30. Hope it is not too late.

To those who pound on people for "camping out", have you ever actually done it? It really can be a fun experience. You meet a lot of great people and talk about Apple stuff, life and what not. Don't be too quick to judge others who enjoy the experience. It really isn't all that bad and if you have the time, why not?

I bought my wife a 4 and she was out running errands with her Black Berry. Would not let me leave without activating the phone. Her phone became useless and she had no way to call me.

there were plenty of 4s left at my local store at 3 in the afternoon.

How big is your local store? Do you happen to know how long the line was for the 4s?

It is located in a mall. I would guess it is average to slightly on the smaller side. I have no idea how long the line was, but at 3pm there was a lady with a clip board and two people waiting to be called in to get the phone. I asked for an iPhone 4 and she looked at me like I had 2 heads. Walked me right in. Still had tons of 4s' on the counter.
