Never. I have a life. I can live without a new device for a couple weeks. My 4S was good enough two weeks ago, it'll still be good a few more weeks from now, until supplies are in stock.

Seriously, do people have nothing better to do? It's just a phone people. No one is going to give a darn in 3 weeks that you were the first in line a had it a few weeks before everyone else.

(and for the record, I've owned a iPhone 3G, 4, 4S and and iPad 2 & 3, and I'll probably buy the iP5 so save your Fandroid/hater comments)

You wait in line for the experience. Like waiting in line to see a concert, movie, play, ride a ride at an amusement park; sure you don't have to, it will still be there when the line dies down, but to wait in anticipation for something with others that are equally excited, that's why you camp out and wait. Plus, you get to meet some cool people sometimes.

Oh I don't wait in these lines, I pre ordered the phone - first time I've ever done that too, I normally wait a month or two before picking up the phone so I can just walk in and out (normally from the carrier too - too much hassle getting in and out of :apple: stores these days), I just happen to be out of a phone this year (quite literally at that). But just because I'd never wait in line for the phone doesn't mean I don't see a reason that others would enjoy it.

But I would still compare it to waiting for a movie, people camp out for midnight showings, yet everyone is going to see the same movie, and the movie will be in theaters for months. Waiting in line for a concert of songs that you probably have in your iTunes library, it's just better when you know that everyone else around also likes what you like.

Other than the LTE I really don't see anything about this phone exciting enough to camp out for quite honestly. I just pre-ordered for delivery on 9/26. I'm most excited about leaving AT&T for Verizon... finally.

Verizon rep told me they might be able to bump my upgrade date up, (currently 10/10) if I go to the store on launch day. I get off at 6 am that day. Figured I'd swing by then and see what the line is like.

The only thing I can assume is that people enjoy camping out for it. I've never camped out for anything in my my life....closest thing was standing in line for an hour for Ozzfest tickets when I was 16 back in 90s. Other than that I can't think of anything so I can't relate to whatever joy someone gets for camping out.

If you don't enjoy it then your either unemployed or a moron.

I am very thankful I am not one that HAS to be the first to have the newest and latest iPhone. The day of the iPhone 4 release, I went to the movie theatre, in the same strip as an Apple store and was amazed at the line wrapped around the building at 3 in the afternoon. All the people actually thought there would still be phones left. It was insane. In a couple months I'll be able to walk right into an Apple or Sprint store and walk out with my iPhone 5. No waiting. No camping.

I'm worse than that, i love my iPhone and Macs but I got a 3g for $49 refurbed and then waited until the 3gs was free. Now I can upgrade to the 4 for free. I don't mind waiting, although for those that don't, I understand.

Ive done the waiting thing with the iPad 2 (waited 5 hours), did a pickup reservation for the iPhone 4 (great experience in which I watched as close to 1000 people looking dead tired and then me walking to the front of the line grabbing my phone in 2 minutes and leaving) and this year I just decided to preorder online and save the hassle. As for people saying that they can just go get it it completely depends on where you are. Certain places have little demand but I can attest to the opposite where demand far exceeds supply.

I'll probably arrive at 5:30am to stand in line. Why? Just personal preference. I enjoy the excitement of launch day (having been on both the purchasing and Apple store-employee side of it). Are there better things to be doing? Probably. Would those things make me happier? Maybe not.

Again, it's all personal preference. But back to OP - 6am won't make you the first in line if you're in any town with decent population. Liking up at 5:30am I expect from previous experience to be one of the first 50.

Honey, Monday the 24th may be a bit too late.

No? The stores are going to get tons of these things everyday. Monday might not be a bad idea. I however will be riding around my town looking for the FedEx truck :D

Man I wish there was a tiny camera in front of apple stores so that I knew when to get in line..

Why camp when you can order it and have it shipped?

Cause ATT screwed up on A LOT of orders...got my preorder reservation at 12:15am and when I went to purchase it under that reservation it would not work...now instead of the 21st I get mine oct 10-16...apple says they were going to expedite my order to receive on the 21st still...but no email so far...ridiculous

Apple employees actually make it fun. The biggest scare is not getting the one you want and settling for one just cause you waited. What takes the most time is them setting your phone up...would be nice if they just sold it to you and let you set it up yourself...and a separate line for those that need help.

So wait, they actually forcefully set the phone up before you buy it? And you can't opt out of it? That would explain why it takes so long at the damn stores.

they normally ask if you need it set up

i think most people won't....the phones can be setup without a computer nowadays

I called my Apple store yesterday to ask this and I was told if you're buying the phone at full retail you can bring it home and activate as you please. But if you are using an upgrade and getting the phone at subsidized price they will activate right in store.

Dude...you have some serious anger issues. Why do you care that some people want to wait in line for the phone? Personally, I wouldn't camp out either, but this is pretty shocking that you would be this bothered by other people's plans. Your comments indicate that you are the one with issues, not the people wanting to wait in line.

Question to the campers:

Why didn't you just camp out by computer the minute it was available for preorder so you didn't have to wait in line, or is waiting in line part of the experience? Personally I wouldnt waste my time in the sun waiting for a phone that I could have delivered to my door or that I could walk into a store the next week and just buy.

But can you opt out of it? Can you say "I don't want to set it up right now coz i'm in a rush and will do it later"?
