I'd be down for a Mini this time around. I use a laptop for work, but I can't stand them. Desktop and tablet is my bit now
I am with you. And as the tablet gets better, my desktop is seeing less of me these days. I don't take my work laptop home anymore and 90 percent of the time I am on my ipad when at home compared to the desktop. I still use the desktop for photo editing, but even that is getting pretty good on the ipad.

There is no reason why there can't be a MagSafe connection in the cable itself. Is that so difficult to come up with? Why does everyone think in these restricted terms? When has apple ever gone from a superior design to an inferior one without providing an alternative?

Only all the time. Like when they took out the superdrive in the iMac in order to make it look thinner but not actually be thinner. Or when they took the Superdrive out of the mac mini and made it exactly the same size except with no slot. Or when they released the macbook with only one USB-C port to do everything, and is now apparently doing only USB-C on all their computers so we get to have a glorious assortment of dongles to lose

Cute, but not as useful. I use Mini's as servers, and it's nice to be able to stack them (or stand them vertically on a shelf).

Seems to me they could scale the whole thing down again though. The current form factor was mostly designed to hold optical drives and spinning hard drives. If they went SSD only they could make a Mac Micro.

Very true. All my Mac Mini is these days is a Plex Server. You may still be able to stack them, but it probably wouldn't be smart as the heat exhaust would have to flow through each stacked mini. Then again, they could probably make a fanless mac mini at this point.

Quote: There have been no [Mac Pro] rumors suggesting an update is in the works...

I think everyone should keep in mind that the Mac Pro is assembled in the US and as such, part leaks are much less likely vs. other products. Will it be updated On Thursday? I have no idea, but I would say it's a greater than 50% probability.
Just recently, someone from mbp subforum discovered polaris 10 and 11 support.

It would be weird to have "hello again" without an iMac upgrade. The original Mac was a kinda photo iMac in all ways.

I thought there was some software label indicating a new MacPro early this year. I would hope the Pros get bumps.

Especially since Microsoft is supposed to be announcing a direct iMac competitor the day before. That said; unless this new Surface AIO comes with a retina level screen, a GTX 10 Series GPU, and a desktop CPU then it won't be much more of a competitor over say, the XPS 27.

It'd be cool if they made the mac mini look like a miniature mac pro.
That would actually be cool. Then they could put in a dGPU.

Really, the whole Mac line should be getting an update.

So speaking on this as it will be my 5th Mac - Does anyone else find it odd that we've hit a wall on Laptops? I mean I purchased the 15 inch Retina 4 years ago and the specs will likely be about the same as the base model this year - 8 GB Ram, 256 GB Solid State Harddrive and so on.

Did we reach the pinnacle of Laptops already???

yeah I have a bunch of iPads at my house but see no reason to use them because my 2013 air is so much better. Back when laptops didn't have the battery life of an iPad I loved my iPad, but now that isn't the case anymore

I think we hit the pinnacle of software that your average user uses. They can only develop software if its going to turn a profit and the larger they make the software the more man hours it takes to develop it. If the general public doesn't demand more than the laptop makers aren't going to put more in so they can either increase profit margins or cut costs to be competitive.

Damn, I hope they don't actually get rid of the MagSafe port, USB-A ports, the HDMI port, and the SD card slot.

This would be ideal: MagSafe 2, 1x USB-A, HDMI, SD card, 2x Thunderbolt 2, 2x USB-C with USB Power Delivery and Thunderbolt 3.
I travel. My machine hosts multiple server VMs. I present. I need a VGA, DVI, and HDMI depending on customer facilities. Yes. Really. The majority of the projectors I have to connect to are still using VGA. Some sites require wired intranet for security. I need RJ-45. On the road, photography is my hobby, SD card is a must have. Don't forget headphone jack for VOIP conferencing without disturbing the office. I have been on 9 hour calls. Wireless won't hack it.

We are over a dozen ports, all in common usage, between just two of us. Do you see the problem?

They can get rid of all of them. Every single one. As long as they provide a good working solution. There is an unending cycle of hardware interface evolution. A constant stream of relatively bulky, vulnerable, low function, slowly obsolesce-ing ports. USB-C + dongles, is a forward looking, working solution.

Yeah, the "hello again" theme would make one speculate that there would be something related to the iMac. But lately, who knows?

I would absolutely love a MacPad.
  • iPad Pro 12.9 sized screen with a
  • Smart keyboard attachment but with a trackpad
  • Connected to the smart keyboard, the devices acts as a mac and runs full the MacOS
  • Un-dock it, it runs iOS 10.
  • New option for universal apps to allow a user to purchase a Mac App and also have access to the iOS app withthe files are automatically shared between the two.
  • Apple Pencil support
  • Smart Keyboard has a spot for Apple Pencil that will also inductively charge it.
I know this sounds a lot like a surface Pro, but I would buy one of these in a heart beat.
This sounds like the Magic MacPad. Excited!

I really think a MacBook Pro w/o the 5K display is very limited at a "Pro/Workstations Class" machine as is the MacPro.

Apple should have the courage to admit that the cylindrical Mac Pro is a bad design, and release a Mac Pro tower again. Apple's pride is doing nothing but hindering their customers. If they showed even just a shred of humility, they'd gain so many customers back.

I believe the next Mac Pro will be an exact scaled-down version of the new Apple Spaceship Campus - complete with a cute little terrarium in the center where you can (not so) safely store your Apple Magic Mouse along with your pet Boa(in case the Boa gets hungry.) It will also have a micro Apple Store to purchase select accessories (secured by a glass dome only accessible through touch ID.) No smoking lounge however :(

Hey can someone explain to a bit of a noob why having the stand alone display with dedicated GPU is so important - if at all? It sounds great but what would be major advantage? Who would find the most use for the dedicated GPU advantage? (Gamers, Video Editing, etc)
Anybody who wants to drive a big, 5K display when they're at their desk while still using a lightweight laptop the rest of the time. Decoupling the GPU from the laptop makes that possible.

With a thinner MBP 13" - why bother with a Mac Book Air 13" without retina? Obviously the new budget model. Especially if they reduce bezel on the MBP 13".
I'd still buy it just because it has a usable keyboard.

The Mac Pro.

Can't wait to see the mac sporting an A11 chip! :D

Have fun with no software.

Umm, no.
....
Enough with floppy-disk nonsense. The two are not even close to equivalent, comparison-wise.
THANK YOU !!!

When Apple removed the floppy, it was already long obsolete. Now that has become the excuse to remove ALL FEATURES AND PORTS. 99.9% of phone and computer users worldwide OWN and USE headphones with a 3.5mm jack. It is NOT in any way obsolete... but Apple removed it for very questionable reasons ( thin-ness and water proof-ness). Just like removing ALL ports is very questionable.... but they are doing it anyway so Ive can have his clean ( bleeping ) lines. Larry Ellison was right!

I'm pretty disappointed that there don't seem to be any leaks or rumors about a new Airport Extreme and Time Capsule. My Time Capsule has been on its last legs for about a year, and I've been patiently waiting for Apple to refresh their current access points.

Apple's WiFi products used to be class-leading, but have unfortunately fallen fairly far behind. Just like their once class-leading computers.

I expect to be disappointed.

A pro computer with only one type of port is crap. Lazy crap. Why does Apple do this sort of dumb stuff? Probably saved a nickel.
This, I just looked at the HP Z840. That bad boy has got the goods.

Introducing the Macintosh in 1984 was a real game changing move.
Naming this event like they have done is a big challenge.
I expect from Apple much more as seen during last years events.
Just pimping Macs or Books won't be enough.
In 84 they have introduced simplicity for complex technology, so that it can be used by everybody.
One big deal was to not compete with numbers or parameters like RAM or MHz but with user value.
So Apple, I've bought my Popcorn and awaiting the next big thing.
