Damn, I hope they don't actually get rid of the MagSafe port, USB-A ports, the HDMI port, and the SD card slot.

This would be ideal: MagSafe 2, 1x USB-A, HDMI, SD card, 2x Thunderbolt 2, 2x USB-C with USB Power Delivery and Thunderbolt 3.

and DVI, eSata, VGA, mini-DIN, SCSI, RJ-45, 3.5mm TRS, 1/4" TRS, mini-USB, micro-USB, USB-B, parallel, serial, PS2, PCMCIA, XLR, Compact Flash, Nikon MC-DC1, IDE, Molex, Neutrik, Playstation controller, Apple 30 pin, and a terminal block.

Pardon my lack of knowledge on this, but is there any firm expectation of the price structure for the new MBPs? Also, what is the typical time window between the announcement and when new Macs are available in-store? Is it similar to the process for iPhones (one week or so, with pre-orders beginning days after the announcement)?

.... When has apple ever gone from a superior design to an inferior one without providing an alternative?

It happened with the initial transition from PPC to Intel. It happened when Apple removed keyboard backlighting from the MBA in 2011. You're about to see it happen on Thursday.

Updating does not mean the removal of every useful port. Apple could keep all the current ports and simply upgrade the TB2 ports to TB3/USB 3.1 and everyone would be happy.

If Apple wants to impress me, they need to release eGPUs with and without a docking solution like the Razor Core.

TrueTone Display like the 9.7 Pro?

God I hope not. As a working creative professional, I calibrate my screen once a month for accurate color and kelvin temperature. They better not mess with that! But then again, Apple has been sending a strong signal over the last 2 years that they could care less about the needs of creative pros.

I have serious cash waiting to give to Apple for a new Mac Pro – but I think it'll be going to a PC vendor next spring. A situation I find deeply frustrating. Tim Cook might be running the company great for profit and stock levels, but in terms of innovation, servicing its loyal customers and enhancing the whole Apple ecosystem, he is – in my opinion – totally screwing it. I get that it might be due to Intel's slow advances with CPUs, but there's more to a computer than just that.

I know the 'pro' market is tiny compared to other sectors, but it's surely a high-margin product that brings in cash, helps Apple test new tech and put the Apple brand in the hands off people who can evangelise and expand mindshare. I remember thinking that it was so cool that I used the same Mac that people doing move VFX or movie editing used. Not any more – Cook & Co. have put paid to that. So unless I'm totally (and pleasantly) surprised on Thursday, Apple has successfully forced me to move to – ye gods, I can hardly say it – Windows.

The only thing better than getting an amazingly cool (but frustratingly unexpandable) new Mac Pro would be the announcement of a version of Mac OS available for PCs... then I could buy some decent hardware and run the best OS too.

(sigh)

Big question for me is whether the memory will be replaceable or soldered to the motherboard. That will determine what advice I give my daughter, who began college two months ago and has been waiting patiently for the new MacBook Pros.

While I believe that it shouldn't be soldered, I wouldn't base my purchase decision on this alone.

If a Mac is available with 16GB of (soldered) RAM, then buy that model. This will last you for many (computer) years.

However, I for one would not buy any Mac with soldered RAM that is below that amount.

For me (aside from the minimum RAM) the deal-breaker is storage space. Basically, current (and I'll wager future) Macs are (technically) not upgradeable at all.

You have to buy the highest-end machine to get something with legs. Which dilutes its value for those of us who are not wealthy.

Now, if you have deep pockets, then fire away... ;)

There's a 95% chance you can order as soon as the keynote is over. As for pricing, if the past is any indication, prices will remain close to the same as it is now.

Myself, and a pile of other people I know are genuinely waiting for this so we can buy them tomorrow. I'm hoping that Apple sees again the value of updated computers and spends a bit more time on mac hardware...

Full plug-and-play support for 5K external displays will require the DisplayPort 1.3 or DisplayPort 1.4 standards, but none of Apple's Macs or upcoming Macs support it, so that's why Apple needs to use an integrated GPU.
- This is incorrect. Thunderbolt 3 can support a 5K external display just fine using its two DisplayPort 1.2 streams over a single cable. MST, yes, but very much plug-and-play.

What are the video formats supported by Thunderbolt 3?
Thunderbolt 3 is based on the DisplayPort 1.2 specification and can support up to 2 streams (eight lanes) of DisplayPort 1.2 video bandwidth. A single cable now provides four times the data and twice the video bandwidth of any other cable, while also supplying up to 100W of power.

One 4K display (4096 x 2160) 30-bit @ 120 Hz
One 5K display (5120 x 2880) 30-bit @ 60 Hz
Two 4K displays each (4096 x 2160) 30-bit @ 60 Hz

pressure-sensitive Force Touch trackpad [...] and a flatter MacBook-style keyboard

Ughhhhh...

I absolutely can't stand that new flat keyboard, and I also really hate the new trackpads. I have the MacBook Air and love the chicklet-style keys, and the feedback/confirmation of a good click on the trackpad. I've tried using the new ones in stores and just do not like them at all.

Quote: There have been no [Mac Pro] rumors suggesting an update is in the works...

I think everyone should keep in mind that the Mac Pro is assembled in the US and as such, part leaks are much less likely vs. other products. Will it be updated On Thursday? I have no idea, but I would say it's a greater than 50% probability.

I hope so. If they don't update the MP ( or at least announce an update to be released later ), they're going to seriously damage their ( already somewhat damaged) relationship with the pro community.

Looking forward to the presentation. I totally forgot Apple sells up-to-latest-spec Macs.

It'd be cool if they made the mac mini look like a miniature mac pro.
Personally I would love to see it as the ATV5. Seriously. Now you can have your TV screen be your Monitor and you can have a movie playing in the picture in picture window, while you work on that financial spreadsheet that would otherwise put you to sleep.

I would absolutely love a MacPad.
  • iPad Pro 12.9 sized screen with a
  • Smart keyboard attachment but with a trackpad
  • Connected to the smart keyboard, the devices acts as a mac and runs full the MacOS
  • Un-dock it, it runs iOS 10.
  • New option for universal apps to allow a user to purchase a Mac App and also have access to the iOS app withthe files are automatically shared between the two.
  • Apple Pencil support
  • Smart Keyboard has a spot for Apple Pencil that will also inductively charge it.
I know this sounds a lot like a surface Pro, but I would buy one of these in a heart beat.

As neat as that would be the processor architectures supported on iOS and MacOS are completely different. This won't happen without a very long lead time as they bring the development community into the new OS.

It's the same as the occasional statement about the next Mac running on an A-series processor. This would be telegraphed WAAAY in advance as everyone developing applications for MacOS recompiles against (and deals with all of the resulting fallout of) the new architecture. I won't rule it out some time in the future but it will never be a sudden surprise as they release the hardware.

Remember... What we do in life echoes in eternity.

Would like to have a cheaper version of the current MacBook 12" ... in the new Macbook Air.... if that is even possible.

I'll be really upset if apple only has a few ports on their "Pro" computer. The Air and Macbook already provide a purpose to those who need the ultimate portability. The Pro is for those who want something in between.

Honestly they DO NOT need to change the iMac design at all. It is perfect. All that needs to happen is upgrade the FaceTime Camera and the internals. MacPro - Who the f*** knows. I can't think of one reason they'd have to not upgrade it. But apparently they love screwing over pro users thinking they can use a bloody iPad Pro as a Macbook Pro.

Ah, the iMac.

I would go for a redesign.

Reduce the bezels and chin to (damn near) zero.

Or imagine that it looks exactly like a TB display, but with the trick iMac G4 arm (still my favorite Apple design EVER)...

Now, the Mac Pro: Tower. Micro tower. Mid tower. Don't care, just let us use standard GFX cards, HDDs/SSDs, and upgradeable RAM. Probably too much to ask.

Instead, we'll get an updated tube with new chips and (proprietary) GFX cards, but in Rose Gold, Mary Gold, and Periwinkle Blue...

Actually, what's happened is that the iMacs and MBPs are a LOT more powerful than they used to be. 5-10 years ago, you needed a Mac Pro if you wanted to do pro level commercial art, design/layout, photo editing, music editing, or video editing...but not anymore. iMacs and laptops easily handle those types of uses now, so that's eroded a large segment of users for the product. That's the real reason Apple isn't in a hurry to update the Mac Pro.

A lot of the people complaining about it probably have no idea what software wouldn't be actually be usable on the most recent iMacs and MBPs.

I think my interest has waned for Apple as I think their priorities and direction aren't what I need in computing anymore.

I get that they're main concern is the shareholder, but I don't like to be the one to fund the shareholders and their penny-pinching.

I hope I'm wrong and come away impressed.
