I held an old iPhone 3gs the other day.... it felt amazing in the hand.

I am sick of big phones, I want a 3gs with updated specs.

OR frankly I would love to see an iFlipPhone.

I had a 3G S when it came out. Loved it. I missed out on buying a fully working one, last week, for £4.50!!

Nooooooo! Let's leave flip phones in China :D

How do you see Apple as having "screwed up"? The 5S is a current iPhone model pictured alongside the higher spec iPhones at Apple.com which they're still actively selling. Whatever does come later, IF it does, that is, would be an upgrade to a highly successful and still actively promoted/sold model.

Because Apple could have easily pushed out an updated 4" screen phone when it introduced the 4.7 and 5.5 inch size. It was obvious at the time that while there was a huge market for a bigger screen that it wasn't universal anymore than TV screens. The 5s isn't a "current tech". It hasn't been for a year and a half.

The result is that a lot of 4" fans didn't bother to upgrade at the next S cycle. Last quarter iPhone 6s revenue was a miss. Apple left money on the table when it effectively pulled the 4" from the annual update list. It now sees the error of it's judgment and is coming back to woo these iPhone 5 and 5s buyer back.

To think Apple are not acutely aware of the plans they execute, is to insult their incredible foresight and planning skills. Because no one gets to see Apple's internal road map, outsiders (all of us) just clumsily piece together the only parts Apple expose to us, what HAS happened and foolishly assume the future to always be based on the past.

Beside that, it would be an extreme stretch of their focused, small-team expertise to expect THREE new phones at once; do you value quality or choice, more?

If this is all, then they loop us in on...what exactly?
Just new/different versions of old products. Version of version of version.

And ofcourse Wrist Bands!

Snoozing.... Wake me up when they loop us on something new.

"Really proud of what the the team at apple has come up with, let me introduce you to the iPhone5cs" [Audience roars in applause]

See this is were my problem is with it, 3 phones from Apple I think its personally a bit to much considering the price of there iPhones, to me the price isn't an issue (not trying to blow my own horn here) but I know my opinion doesn't count for the many out there. I just can't see the new 4' iPhone being something that's updated and affordable!

So basically like any other phone company out there? What Samsung done, water proofed there phones and given VR.

Let's face VR is like the 4K TV equivalent, great idea but not for this current time. it needs to grow before phone companies attempt to take over it.

Any yet they made the decision not to update the 4" alongside the bigger screens and their revenue shortfall shows it was such a poor decision that they brought back the 4" with updated guts, and did so ASAP, not at the regular iPhone launch event.

Sorry, but Apple's execution, foresight, and planning skills has been off since SJ left the building. There is a tissue roll of errors strewn out at One Infinite Loop. From the botched Maps launch to the staff debacles (Forster, Browett, Mansfield, etc) to product unavailability, to the flawed AW resale. These are men, not gods. They are infallible -- they've admitted some of their miscues. It's not heresy to suggest they mad bad choices.

The infinite loop of these "loop" predictions is what Apple is saying; it's recursive. You've tied yourself up in loops, trying to work it out. It's as subtle as the fact that the ONLY ironic thing in Alanis Morisette's "Isn't it ironic?" was the fact that the irony was that a song ABOUT irony, wasn't describing ANY truly ironic situations.

Now THAT was ironic (don't you think? ;) ), but you guys? ... driving us loopy with your being misdirected by the very thing Apple KNEW you'd get hung up on, and are guffawing HARD at you all. :D

To one who can afford iPhone, not being able to afford it is irrelevant. They're not vital to life, and if you can't afford one... oh well. Apple aren't going to dilute with cheap and tacky, they leave that to everyone else.

Rather hoping the new Watch bands will be available soon. If the new Nylon Band is priced between the Sport Band and Leather Loop/Classic Buckle it could sell well. $60 is a sweet spot.

Mac OS X is optimized by Apple and can do more with less hardware, just like iOS is optimized to do more with less hardware. Apple doesn't need to update their laptops and desktops. Only Windows and Android users care about specs. ;)

What a load of rubbish. Specs may not matter for browsing the web or typing in Word, but for anyone who uses their MacBook Pro for any serious professional work, specs most certainly DO matter. OS level optimisations are only going to get you so far - when you're trying to composite video in After Effects, whilst rendering out of Premiere, you're going to want as much processing grunt and memory you can get your hands on. If Apple don't plan on releasing new MacBook Pros soon, they should look at adjusting their current prices to reflect the age of the technology they're selling - no way I'm paying AUD$4000 for a "top of the line" MacBook Pro which features 12-24 month old tech. They're taking us for a ride...

A record breaking quarter that's a miss? Seems like a non-sequitur.

I think you meant fallible. Yes, they are only men, but combined, they form the most valuable company on earth, so are many orders of magnitude away from the failure you paint. A company can derail and fold in less than a year though poor planning, so why haven't they? You need to get over the myth that Steve Jobs was the ONLY reason Apple is a success - spend a few years reading books and watching lectures about Apple and tech giants, and less time voicing discontent in an echo chamber inhabited by primitive thinkers with consumer mindsets.

Says the guy who's been a member here less than a week.

Yeah, sure you have, except 3/4's of your posts have been derogatory and negative, tearing down others and pointing out flaws.

What a fukking pretentious hypocrite.

There was me thinking I thought he/she was an oddball, thank god I'm not the only one.

Quit fracturing the product line with stupidly named/rebranded products. Why couldn't this be released at just another size option as part of the iPhone 7 line in September?

iPad Pro? Makes about as much sense as jumping from iPad 4 to iPad Air.

I totally agree. Why name a product a 5 anything, when the iPhone 7 is coming in a few months? Even if they upgrade everything inside of it to almost match what's coming in the 7....people will still psychologically associate it with "old" because of the number 5. They should have waited to release all three models under the 7 moniker. If anything, just call it an iPhone mini. But an iPhone 5se? Nah. Bad move.

I see equal merit in both your comments. I feel what they mean is that Apple does more with less, but yeah, of course they still need to release capable hardware, but possibly what was meant was that because Android, and to maybe a (lesser) extent, Windows, are light years away from the competence of Apple engineer's fine tuning hardware and software, they need higher HARDWARE specs to over compensate (which is funny, as over compensation of another kind seems to be an ugly trend in Android and Windows worlds, at times :D)

I will not be buying the new 4" model today, but in September if the Iphone 7 does not shrink in size ( by slimming down the bezel) then I will go back a 4" model. I have had the Iphone 6 since launch day and I regret not returning it time to go back to my Iphone 5. As somebody who uses the phone mostly for calls, texts, calendar and contacts I miss the pocketable size and one hand use with a case on. While it may be a niche market as some say I think the demand is still strong for a 4" model. I know many people who went for the Plus phones and exchanged them for the 4.7". Not everybody consumes a ton of media and plays games.

As far as the new Ipad goes, I am not sure that I may do. I have an Ipad Air which is working fine, but I need to either get a new laptop this year or upgrade the ipad. First world problems

Let's get this thing over and done with so I can buy my NUC and get on with life.

"Next Unit of Computing" ... oooh, such a clever and emotionally charged brand name; it sounds so......... corporate.

By the description, however, I'd expect this:

NEXT_Cube-IMG_7154.jpg

... wouldn't mind so much, then.

I was pushing the button too, but official announce for Skull Canyon release date just put me in stand-by. I can wait a couple of months

If you pushed your own standby button, how come you're active? :p

Of course we can ALSO expect to be preached to about Apple's fight with the US government. :-(

If that's really what Apple will announce later today, colour me unimpressed.

I need a new Mac, I'm holding off because current models are outdated and Apple should update them with Skylake chips and new features, but Macs are apparently so embarrassingly low on Apple's list of priorities that I may start looking at PC laptops.

Apple had to introduce the larger 4"7 and 5"5 because of clear shifts in the market to larger screen phones, as media consumption increased exponentially. That ship has now sailed.
Sailed to nowhere. If it had an effect at all, it destroyed Samsung profit share, but left the Android/iOS market share split virtually unchanged. Big iPhones were a necessity to fend off competition, but so were iPad mini and iPad Pro, which doesn't mean the preferred form factor for most people didn't stay with the iPad Air size. The difference is, with not offering a small iPhone for two years in a row, Apple expressed its expectation that the small form factor was no longer relevant. The rumored iPhone SE can be seen as a shift of opinion within the company.
There will always be a smaller proportion who cling to the past. Remember in 2012 (many, including myself swore by physical keyboards). But each year, that group has gotten smaller and smaller.
No I don't remember 2012, but I remember 2007 the first iPhone keynote when Steve Jobs pointed out in detail why physical keyboards are the enemies of progress ("Can't add a button."). Too bad you needed more than 5 years to realize what was obvious to everyone from the beginning. A 4-inch iPhone isn't technology from the past unless you put old technology in it. With the rumored specs the iPhone SE is every bit a modern smartphone just in a smaller form factor.
Even today, the remaining blackberry die-hards still exist, but they are small in number...
You're not wrong with one thing, so you must be right with another thing? Sorry that's not how it works! Better for media consumption is not the all deciding factor, otherwise we would all use 15 and 17-inch MacBook Pros.
I'm not bashing the SE and happy that Apple is providing choice - my point is that if that is the highlight of today's keynote... then not so exciting for the market and for apple fans...
Good for you, if you already have the iPhone you always wanted. Just wait five years to see if not you come around on hand-sized iPhones again.
