OKAY! SO WHAT APPLICATIONS OTHER THAN KIDDIES IN SCHOOL?

I am not that kind of engineer.

And 98% of humanity is not a surgeon....

I am not watching a movie on it, I spent close to a grand for a large TV.

I have tried Oculus and not impressed, will never replace my Playstation.

I am not an interior decorator, so buying one for that one time I waste my money at IKEA sounds dumb.

I am really trying to see how this sells to the over 18 crowd, given it's basically either a work application or a gaming headset. And you can't game at work, unless a game developer, and then it's bought by the company.

I honestly do not see haha what purpose this thing will have.

And then it begs the question of Accessibility....will Apple design it so that BLIND people can use it? Really? VR/AR for the Blind? Virtually simulate something they can't see?

Just saying "It starts here!" doesn't mean anything. Kellogg found John Kellogg thought back in the 1890s that getting people to eat cereal for breakfast would break them of meat eating. "It starts here!" Didn't work out.

They thought banning alcohol would stop people from drinking. Didn't work. Just made a bunch of criminals wealthy.

What other application?

Am I gonna order an Uber on it? What about dinner?

Do I access my bank account with it?

Do I check email on it?

Oh boy! I can LOOK AT PICTURES on it.

Maybe I'll calculate on it?

What about setting a timer?

You know what? Maybe I'll set a destination in it, use it to map out where I am going while I drive with it on!

Maybe I'll scroll Facebook on it?

Buy from Amazon?

I'll take photos!!!

Oh shoot, gotta use Authenticator on it, too!

Check my calendar for a bit.....

Obviously, I have to change my wallpaper.....

Maybe I'll control my TV with it, change the channels...oh wait, can't watch TV....I'm in the Matrix

Maybe I'll browse the web on it.

Oh wait, I have an iPhone/iPad/Mac that can do all of these things.....and more......
It's gonna replace our desktops.
Imagine having a screen as big as you want, interacting with hands and pointing with eyes instead of using the mouse. This will make most office work much more productive.
In two words: Minority Report.

I have found that I rarely touch the PS5, these days. Once you experience gaming in VR, it's hard to go back to a plain old 2-D screen. Now, when they finally launch the PS5 Avatar game and the PSVR2, then my interest will be piqued.

You seriously think people are going to strap a VR headset to their faces and work out?
Yep. If I'm not out walking in the woods or kayaking, I'm working out with VR apps like Supernatural. Granted, Beat Saber and most of the shoot 'em ups (typically not my cup of tea but the cartoonish Dead & Buried 2 is insanely fun) are a heck of a workout!

Name mainstream applications outside of gaming please, things that I as the average Joe Consumer want/need to make my life easier/better, and am willing to pay $$$ for.
Please.

are you seriously so lacking in imagination? first, games alone will be enough to go mainstream as I said above once the graphic improves and hardware becomes lighter, with devs making games just like they did for iPhone.

now outside of game, you can have a travel app that takes you to all the cool places in the world like mount everest, pyramids, antarctica etc..thousands of places most people won’t be able to go, in full high def vr as you walk around just like you are there without the danger etc…app could charge some $ per location

or something simple and quick like Mercedes releasing a new car, and you can open doors etc…look around inside / outside, or checkout the space shuttle, or anything

or any kind of lesson, want to learn how to install a computer or fix a car, you can try it in vr with expert guidance use real examples to teach you

or instead of physically going to open house, you can do it vr ( already some very limited version of this on realtor without headset ), but in vr you get to feel the place walking around in high def just like if physically there

or vr sex…

or…insert infinite possibilities.

what‘a lacking now as I said is more powerful hardware for photo realistic graphics, lighter more comfortable head gear with end goal being similar to wearing glasses, and a unified App Store / good dev kit that anyone can leverage to make vr apps / games. It will be the same as now where everything has an app you can download, you will have a vr App to download… and once the headset becomes as comfortable as glasses it will ultimately replace your physical desktop for work ( maybe a hybrid ar / vr ) where you still type using a physical keyboard but everything else is just in the glasses.

Can we also get new Apple Polishing Cloth, please? It’s starting to become outdated. Offer in more exclusive colors (Jet Black, Product Red), premium fabric, and different cloth sizes (Apple Polishing Cloth Pro/Pro Max/Ultra. There is so much potential 😭🥲
I’m hoping for a mini version. These bedsheet-sized cloths are getting ridiculous, one-handed use is impossible.

Very true. And today's controllers for consoles are pretty much a standard layout that everyone knows. I think it will be very hard to make a controller for VR that is as functional as the game-pad style most people use today.
You guys are aware that VR controllers and games have been a thing for many years now? Oculus, Vive, Valve Index, …

Personally I’d hope for a moddable Beat Saber game, but not holding my breath with Apple.

While we were discussing what the iPhone 15 series will offer, here’s a competing product coming Jan 4th that has an interesting feature set.

the OnePlus 11 also looks set to sport a 50 MP IMX890 main camera, aided by 48 MP and 32 MP shooters, with a 16 MP selfie camera in front. Under the hood will be the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, LPDDR5X RAM, and UFS 4.0 RAM. Three memory configurations are listed: 12/256 GB, 16/256 GB, and 16/512 GB. Lastly, the phone will be powered by a 5000 mAh battery with 100W charging.

The current Oneplus 10t runs $750 USD.
So if Apple is considering price reductions seems to be a response to its various competition products possibly.

And they are all nothing but demos and proof of concept. 100% of them are inadequate for any real or serious use, because the tech is poor.
Magic Leap has an annual revenue approaching $200 million, and Microsoft got a military contract last year to deliver 120.000 HoloLens headsets. The tech is in real use.

To be fair, it not everything we imagine is realistic and/or is actually going to happen.
But sure.
Creativity is very important, especially in such a materialistic world

Of course. But none of those devices is flying off the shelves and there’s never been a breakout VR game despite VR being a thing, as you say, for many years. I think the controller is one aspect of why VR hasn’t taken off and will likely never replace console gaming.

Interesting. The idea doesn’t appeal to me at all but I’ve never tried a VR workout app, so what do I know! Maybe it’s more appealing than I realize.

Agree, but there are some businesses who will use it, not too many though, eg distance learning, remote troubleshooting and such.
Agreed. But chances are they will use the Hololens, if they aren’t using it already. Apple won’t be content with a niche product. They need to sells millions and millions of units to make it worthwhile. I just don’t see that happening, certainly not at the price point most expect. And I don’t see enterprise customers choosing Apple over Microsoft, especially considering the inroads Microsoft has already made.

Periscope module is very large. Apple would end up with iPhone 12 mini battery life if they did it. Understandable why it isn’t happening.
Understandable due to the fact they want to upwell you to the brick-sized expensive phone. This thing will trickle down to the slightly-less-pro model the following year or 2 just like Dynamic Island next year . This technology is far from new and has come a long way. It‘d fit fine without a battery life hit. Especially on with an Apple SoC and efficiencies.

Another reason I probably will stay away from the iPhone (for another year) due to this fake “pro” phone nonsense.

I don’t think it’s upselling. Periscope module is huge. Look at teardowns. It’s the size of a 50MP sensor or roughly 3 12MP modules combined.

It would be like having 5 rear lenses on iPhone 14 Pro. The space comes from somewhere and it’s gonna be the battery.

Can someone explain to me how a VAR/AR headset is actually gonna sell?

Because I can't think of a single use for it other than gaming.
I think this headset will just be a prelude for the actual revolution which are going to be the rumoured ARglasses - if this is going to be the more budget and more portable device, which is still a few years away, this is going to be the AR/VR etc. experience catered to the masses.

For now, target audience for the headset could be AR/VR developers who could take the headset as a sandbox to develop both the use cases (other than gaming) and the corresponding applications for future devices. I can already see a few applications like integration with AppleMaps though, displaying information on your surroundings into your view as way as the calculated route. Same for stuff such as Wikipedia, or retail shops. However, this would also require lots of integration with spatial data. will be curious to see how this develops but I think we are truly going to see some SciFi stuff in the next 5 years.

I would like to see the HomePod range increased. I missed out on getting the larger HomePod and would like to add them to my minis to be able to create a home cinema with great sound.

Either that Apple buy Sonos.

Sonos has been so disappointing for me. The product has steadily got worse over the years I have owned it thanks to their software upgrades.

What I really want is a modern version of the Time Capsule. I don't want all my data in their cloud, I want it local but with integration into the ecosystem. I don't expect it though and my gut feeling is I will have to move away from Apple as they go further down the services road.

I work in Retail and Oculus's get returned very shortly after purchase, barely a week.

Complaints:
  • Single Person usage only. Can't really share with friends, siblings.
  • Multiplayer possible, BUT NOT AT THAT PRICE
  • Games are ridiculously expensive
  • Games are ridiculously short.
  • No way to tell if game sucks before buying, Demos rare.
  • Not a full game, usually a Side Story or DLC type add on to a main series title
  • Stationary and bulky. Can't play it in the car really well, going on vacation requires a whole bag, etc.
  • Buyer got bored after a month as releases are few and far between and most games short and easily beaten.
  • Easily damaged, broken, etc. Adults more cautious, but kids are not.
All of this ls obviously going to change as the tech improves. Graphics. Depth of story. Lightness of glasses. Etc etc

How many people work in Industrial Design and Architectural Previewing? Is that even a hobby you'd want to do at home, which is where the device will be used.

I have gamed on everything since the NES. I didn't the Virtual Boy and this sounds just a very modern Virtual Boy.
I CAN ALSO GAME ON A LARGE SCREEN TV with a game console that is less than $600.

You want me to work out with a headset on? I don't exercise with my AirpodsMax, why would I want a larger device that also covers my face....WHICH IS SWEATING

I am not the only one who won't buy it, which means Apple is wasting engineering talent that could be used elsewhere, like nuking Stage Manager and giving us Final Cut or maybe better Watch Battery Life, or maybe cooler things for the iPad? Or maybe that Mac Pro that has gone missing? Or maybe the Apple Car, which is also vaporware at this point.

1.6 Million won't buy this, much less anywhere near half a billion
Stage manager is a god send. 👍🏼
