Anyone else starting to give up on AirTags? I really want them to happen, I even got rid of my Tile devices. But, losing hope at this point. 😔
Apple is weird with design, especially with off-of-the-beaten-path products (e.g. outside of their mainstream products: mac computers, iphones, and ipads).
They have a $350 keyboard case for iPad Pro models, but people pay that because it is a decently made option and there aren't really a lot of third-party alternatives.
They make a ~$120 iphone and watch magsafe travel charger, and probably a significant number of people went with alternatives or are waiting for cheaper third-party charger options.
Official Apple charging cables and USB-C chargers are substantially more than third party models as well. Some of this is just the designers being very specific with what they want, rather than letting price drive the equation. Sometimes this means third-parties took "shortcuts", sometimes there is little material difference other than the price.
I also suspect some of the Belkin TB3 accessories that came out around the Apple launch were actually originally Apple designs - the number of gigabit ethernet adapter sales Apple saw wasn't worth their time, but others stepped up.
So the question is - will there be a material benefit of Apple's tags vs all third parties? I suspect Apple _does_ see enough of a market to participate, but you might prefer a third party tag that focuses on size, or price, or ruggedness more.
