I expect Tim will drone on about how many apps have sold and how much Apple has paid to developers (but apparently not the tax man).

I expect Phil will schill the spec-bumped hardware (but we kept the same prices!).

I expect Craig will spend 35 minutes showing the amazing Maps application and how we can now we can send even more emojis through messages.

I expect Eddy will scare little children.

And I expect the Wizard of Ive will appear in a white-background video wearing a too-tight v-neck t-shirt extolling the .1% thinner Apple Watch.

That's what I expect.

So let's say Apple releases lightening headphones, will these be compatible with older phones? If so can that be a software fix?

I have no knowledge in how connectors work so any answers to help me understand will be greatly appreciated.

Probably some compatibility as Lightning can already be used as a headphone jack (that is not actually new). However, knowing Apple as we do, there will be something about these or the software that makes anyone using prior phones miss out on some highly-touted advantage of this connection in the new iPhone model.

One of the biggest reasons there is a jailbreaking community is to make new exclusive features work with older hardware. In many cases, new features only for the "latest & greatest" work just fine with older hardware.

So my answer to you is probably... but if something "juicy" is reserved only for those who buy brand new iPhones, you might still be able to take advantage of it with a jailbreak.

What I wouldn't do is hope for a software fix. Apple likes to sell new hardware, not keep the "already sold" at the cutting edge for any longer than necessary.

so tell me again whats the purpose with having two cameras on the back of the iPhone??

My 3 best guesses:

1. So that it can keep one "eye" on the headphone adapter and still have the other for camera purposes.

2. To tangibly differentiate this model from the 2 variants of iPhone 6 for the crowd that really, really needs strangers to notice that they have the "latest & greatest" iPhone

3. To set up hot demand for the quad camera in the next phone, then the octo camera in the one after that. Who is going to want only 2 lenses when there are iPhones with 4... and then 8.

All ;)

So here is where I am relative to all this -

macOS hardware will to be announced. They never announce that at an iOS device release.

The iPhone and iOS10 will be the big stars of the show. This is standard for a September Announcement.

By now it seems pretty clear that the form factor will not change drastically. Whine all you like, but I think that is a great call. The current form factor is actually great IMHO and there is no need to change just to change.

Faster, more megapixel, dual camera, more memory all will be on display and will seem awesome.

Having been on iOS 10 for a while I think this is the real star. Way better integration accross all platforms is really awesome. Being able to wake up the computer based on your watch proximity is awesome. Finding your car is awesome. Etc.

What I really hope to hear (but somehow doubt) is that
- they will ramp up iworks to be competitive.
- they will make sense of icloud pricing and music match and create a family plan for data sharing.
- rename products to something that actually make sense.
- consolidate all lines to use the same adapter (usb-c or lightning or thunderbolt or something, but just one)
- ramp up homekit
- get rid of the name beats by dr Dre and bring it in line with the yet non existing apple naming standards
- create a sonos competitive product
- announce their intention on driverless cars
- make true cable cutting apps versus apps that need to be authorized throug a cable subscription

Yes asking too much, i know. But still......

I think we can all expect an underwhelming release

Wondering if the Apple Watch will be in big demand?

I don't know, but I am thinking of picking up a fitbit charger 2 if next week doesn't produce something amazing.

Oh man, you nailed it. The Eddy Cue part was great. Ive will not be at the Keynote, he usually appears on the big screen narrating the next iPhone in his sophisticated voice, announcing the new features. (Read this next line and picture Ive's voice)

Now Apple....Has always pushed it limits to introduce a new feature.....in which we call 3D Touch.....which simply only Apple could do....through using the LCD and digitizer.....

I like Ive though. No disrespect to him.

Ok, so he was off by a few days (1/9/2007) ... so sue 'em

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_TV
ugh. From the very same wikipedia link:

Operating system:
1st: Apple TV software 3.0.2
Based on Mac OS X 10.4
Released February 10, 2010
2nd: Apple TV software 6.2.1 (6698.99.19)
Based on iOS 7.1.2
Released June 30, 2014
3rd and 3rd Rev A: Apple TV software 7.2.1
Based on iOS 8.4.1
Released February 25, 2016
4th: tvOS 9.2
Released March 21, 2016

Not that the age of a device has any direct correlation to its operating system number anyway—I'm pretty sure both Windows and OS X are considerably older than 10 years—but you'll notice "tvOS" began at 9.2, which is the absurdity I was trying to point out. Even more is the fact that no Apple TV predating the ATV4, which is less than a year old, can even run tvOS, so pointing out the age of the device has even less bearing on the OS numbering scheme than it otherwise might have.

Being able to kick the better quality DAC outside the phone allows the substitution of a lessor, cheaper DAC inside (it doesn't have to be a great DAC for just phone voice analog). That plus jettisoning the headphone jack cuts costs while leaving the price the same. Profit margin expansion.

It also allows them to "thinner," which we all know is all important.

Since there will be some segment that will want to continue using their "good headphones", very profitable adapters will be sold with iPhones, increasing average revenue & profit per device sold. Additional profit will also be made from the licensing by many headphone makers to be able to use the proprietary Lightning connector.

And, once we swallow this pill (and we will- some with mouths already gaping wide while others are already bitter but want or need the rest of the benefits of iPhone ownership even if this is a big hassle for them), it emboldens Apple to think about what else they can eject in future phones (battery? camera? etc), further reducing costs (or fattening margin), further "thinner"ing future phones and enhancing revenue & profit-per-device by the add-on accessory sales for those that must have what USED to be built inside iPhones:
  • Apple already has a battery add-on accessory. It's not a great leap to imagine that becoming the "whole" battery in some future "thinner" phone.
  • Camera already protrudes so much some call it a "wart." Yet iPhones will only get thinner. Laws of physics are laws. How long until the Camera is ejected to an add-on accessory?
Seem insane? I can already hear the usual cast of cheerleaders re-assigning the same spin used in support of jettisoning the headphone jack... such as both battery & camera technology are more "antiquated" than the 3.5mm jack. Now everyone can choose whatever capacity battery they desire. My SLR shoots better quality pictures than any iPhone I've ever had, so why NOT get rid of the poorer quality, redundant camera 'I rarely use.' Etc. All they need to do that is to believe Apple is going to follow this ejection with either or both of those.

On the other hand, the external DAC is not automatically going to be better quality just because it's external. It seems likely that the average Joe won't be able to dig in deep enough to understand why the $30 dongle is much lower quality than the $300 dongle. So that Joe may actually have a lower quality DAC in his phone and a lower quality DAC converting the music to which he listens from digital to analog.

If so- and doesn't that seem likely?- the lower quality of audio playing through wired (via cheap DAC) will make the generally lower-quality of Bluetooth audio sound about as good. Cue sales of very profitable air pods and many praising how it sounds as good as a wired connection.

Geniu$$$$$
So, long story short, you believe this will be another successful decision by Apple.

We won't see a "wow" factor until we see new Macs. iPhones, iPads, and Watches have been the star for the last 4 keynotes. It's getting stale.

Actually, we won't see a wow factor until Apple releases whatever it is that's related to Project Titan - circa 2020 / 2021

As the keynote draws near to the end, Tim Cook walks out one last time.
Grinning from ear to ear he says,
"Folks, I want to thank you for coming out this morning. We had a lot to cover today, but....there is one more thing I'd like to share with you... I'm frickin' rich! Cook out."

Drops mike and walks off. :D

I've been waiting so long for the macbook pro. My god. Every couple of months people claim the new macbook pro will be revealed at their next event, which never happens. I guess Apple's gonna wait until all of their customers who need a new laptop will have no choice but to go to a PC. I mean, really. They're not giving us much choice. But I guess I'll wait until that October event everyone's talking about. After that, I don't know.

Same here. I'm still using a mid 2009 MBP! I finally broke down and bought the 9.7 iPP with Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard a few months ago. I didn't buy it as a laptop replacement but as a companion/ backup device (I'm an artist so the Apple Pencil made a lot of sense for me). I have to say I've been very surprised by how much I can actually get done on it. When I think about buying a new MBP, there is so much overlap, it really is hard for me to justify the additional cost. But then I try to update a Wordpress website on my iPP or do tons of copy/paste and I realize I still need a MBP. :/

The later the MacBook Pro come out, the less likely I am going to buy it...
Kind of hard to justify the purchase while less than 2 semester before graduate...

Another thing to consider: Apple might use Sky Lake processors and not the latest Kaby Lake. It will be really sad if this long overdue MPB is already outdated when it's released. :/

Darker color look great! Got to see it in the iPhone 7 release announcement! What will Apple think of next?

We are all (myself included) guilty of ragging on Apple for not continuously pushing the envelope, but the fact is that Apple is *NOT* the same company they were 10 years ago. Back then they were a much smaller company making forward-thinking devices and software for technically driven people. Now they make devices for the masses, which means commodity items that have appeal to most anyone. Those people care about cool apps like facebook/snapchat/etc. and bragging rights. There is no longer a financial incentive to drive innovation.

Yet, they have 3D touch that no one has, will get an innovative camera likely based on the many tech company they bought lately and touch ID is barely a few years old and probably a haptic feedback home button will appear on this Iphone. Oh, and well, their CPU is more than full year ahead of all the rest and they got the fastest storage controler... They use the toughest material around AL 7000 in a massive scale that no one else does... Hey, no biggie...
But hey, "no innovation" is the ******** narrative people run with here...

There is also a high probability of a true tone display on both phones (which would make it the best display around despite the fawning about OLED).

Removing the headphone jack is just the opposite of a company who is afraid of innovation.

So, WTH have others done that Apple has not done. Samsung's camera has only been significantly better than Apple this year.

Apple has to be able to produce hundreds of millions of a device, something that also require availbility of components. If there is not enough OLED in the world for those phones, Apple won't use it.
