Gloating, profit taking, refining their marketing hype, while Tim Cook has been pontificating about this and that.

It's good to be Apple, fat and happy... they're enjoying life.

Apple's joy comes from thrilling us with the most amazing products. I have no doubt they are feeling it atm, they know a lot of people are unhappy (not me, I'm still delighted with Apple) and they will be desperate to turn that around with magical new products.

As the keynote draws near to the end, Tim Cook walks out one last time.
Grinning from ear to ear he says,
"Folks, I want to thank you for coming out this morning. We had a lot to cover today, but....there is one more thing I'd like to share with you... I'm frickin' rich! Cook out."

Drops mike and walks off. :D

Funny, but obviously could never happen. Tim Cook is definitely not motivated by money.

Another thing to consider: Apple might use Sky Lake processors and not the latest Kaby Lake. It will be really sad if this long overdue MPB is already outdated when it's released. :/

As I understand it, Kaby Lake quad core processors are not ready for the high-end MBPs. But the dual core ones used in the lower-end MBP models could be ready. That said - if new machines have already been on a production run, there's a good chance none of the Kaby Lake processors were ready in time. Kaby Lake is also not a substantial upgrade so we wouldn't be missing much.

You mean the 7th? So you are interested in the Apple Watch now? I thought I read you were not interested in one. I think you mentioned your wife doesn't like hers. What are you looking forward to in Gen 2 versus Gen 1?
I've mentioned a few times I was interested after hearing about battery and gps. For me gps for tracking runs was essential. The battery increase is also up there.

My wife's single gripe (she doesn't run) is battery life. Outside of that she hasn't had any complaints. A device can be superb, but if it's dead before the end of the day, that makes it hard to love. She does like it though.

Making new phones so great that several hundred million people world wide, let that sink in, have wanted to buy them. And, the iPhone 7, assuming the rumors are correct, will positively reflect upon the 20 Billion they have spent the past couple of years on R and D, and the billions in the years before, with double base storage and double max storage, faster charging, a new faster and more powerful processor, increased battery life, new stronger screen with even sharper resolution and TrueTone color accuracy, Optical Image stabilization, great new low light camera, new duo lens system, better built in speaker sound, new microphone system, new two way lightning headphones, new color choices, etc., plus whatever improvements haven't leaked. And a new operating system for it. And that all in just 12 months on one product. But you are right, it is still a rectangle!

Damn, if Tim Cook and the tens of thousands of engineers at Apple would just stop staring out the window, they might get something done. They will pay the price when only 60 to 70 million people decide they like the new iPhone enough to buy it in the Christmas season and close to 200 million buy it in the first year. I can only imagine your depression then.
You seem quite impressed by the improvements you've listed. Even if true, it's nothing extraordinary.

After all these years, Apple ought to be able to deliver this and more... Much more. They've got unlimited resources and decades of experience. Perhaps next year they'll get serious and do something significant...

They're certainly capable.

You don't think Apple has great margins on their computers? And based on how much better the integration between my Macs and iOS devices has been getting (including in the Sierra beta) it seems clear Apple sees a future for both devices.

But let's face it - iOS devices will always outnumber Macs. We only have 2 Macs (iMac and MacBook Pro) in our house but 11 iOS devices (4 iPhones, 4 iPads, 2 TVs and 1 Watch).

Well, technically the watch and TV aren't iOS devices, but that's always true. He's correct, though. Profit margins on computers are somewhat low for tech. Markup is very low on computers compared to mobile devices and especially accessories. They're making their biggest profits typically on watch bands and charging accessories. You're not selling nearly as many accessories for computers either, because the accessories for computers have a much longer shelf life generally than ones you carry around at all times.

The Skylake chipsets most likely destined for the 15" MBP have only seen the light of day in the very recent Intel Skull Lake Canyon NUC and are not shipping in any laptop yet.So, my guess is that it's very hard to put in a new chip that's not available.

I don't know what Apple have destined for the MBP, but I can buy a 15" laptop from Dell, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Acer. and HP with a Skylake processor (Intel Core i7-6700HQ and Intel Core i7-6820HK)

On the latest Ctrl-Walt-Delete podcast Walt Mossberg and Nilay Patel of Verge fame both coyly mentioned that they had heard of a "surprise" from different sources coming at the event. They didn't elaborate and kind of acted like they weren't sure if it was real or not. Hard to say what that means, but food for thought.
Tim Cook will resign. Surprise!

new wireless headphone options, etc

Like bluetooth? We already have those.

The nice thing about everyone being so pessimistic about the new phones, is that I can sleep in on pre-order day and order at 9am, and still get it the first day.

I think people will still preorder them at alarming rates. People will stand in lines. Tim Cook can sh... in a box and people will line up to buy it. Not all people, but a great deal many.

They'll end the presentation with a video filled with closeup shots of the new MacBook Pro with a "coming soon" message right before the video closes on the Apple logo.

Or, a message that says Mac Pro discontinued.

How many did you buy?

45 for a graphics company. Stopped buying them for other clients because they are so outdated. People don't buy them, not because there is a small market, they don't buy them because they are outdated to hell.

So everything on this big list is insignificant; what would rise to that magic level?

Most likely Taylor swift coming out, singing a song, her album will be forced on us with a cheesy "click of a button" speech. She'll dance around like a moron to make herself more "down to earth". People will clap and start refreshing the apple website hundreds of times so that it comes back up and they can order their iPhones first.

"People don't buy them " to the tune of several hundred million people in just the last couple of years.

That's true, I actually wholeheartedly agree. And just like the Thunderbolt Display and Macbook pro 17, we'll see them on their way out. People think the TB will come back, just like they thought the 17" would come back. My opinion is no, but I have no evidence, so just my observation. Mostly because Apple doesn't discontinue a product, just to bring back an improved version. They usually keep selling it outdated until a new one is released.

When they were the underdog, they need to push the envelope. When they are selling 500,000,000,000,000 phones a year, that is no longer necessary. Getting by is doing them just fine.
Umm no, thoughts like that can have a company crumble quickly. If your not trying, your as good as dead.

Definitely feels that way! Still hoping for some sort of "wow" factor but this isn't the same Apple as years past. They seem to be releasing materials on a "just get by" mentality, instead of pushing the envelope.
So removing the headphone jack isn't pushing the envelope enough for you? If they wanted to just get by they would keep the camera, antenna, modem, battery, speakers, CPU, GPU all the same as last years model. And those are just the things we can be sure they are upgrading.

so tell me again whats the purpose with having two cameras on the back of the iPhone??
You'll see and you'll want one just like everyone else.

The nMP? They were outdated the day they shipped. I could have ordered a half dozen immediately, if they met our needs; the guy down the hall ordered a half dozen oMP refurbs that day, he wishes he'd ordered more, but he's ready to upgrade again, and he's not even looking at Apple. All of his 3D Apps will run fine on PCs.

People not buying them, pretty much defines the small market.

When Apple adopted Intel Processors, the promise was that they'd keep pace with or surpass their PC brethren. Nothing like that has happened recently.

The Mac Work Station market wasn't growing by leaps and bounds under any circumstances, but changing the form factor and doubling the price, halved the market. The nMP is simply not the general purpose workhorse the oMP was.

When people want a workstation, all they care about getting what they need, and if Apple can't supply it, they find alternatives. You can't hand them a watchband.

No offense, but unless the companies you procured these for were heavily into FCPX, you were tossing their money down the drain.

Being able to kick the better quality DAC outside the phone allows the substitution of a lessor, cheaper DAC inside (it doesn't have to be a great DAC for just phone voice analog). That plus jettisoning the headphone jack cuts costs while leaving the price the same. Profit margin expansion.

It also allows them to "thinner," which we all know is all important.

Since there will be some segment that will want to continue using their "good headphones", very profitable adapters will be sold with iPhones, increasing average revenue & profit per device sold. Additional profit will also be made from the licensing by many headphone makers to be able to use the proprietary Lightning connector.

And, once we swallow this pill (and we will- some with mouths already gaping wide while others are already bitter but want or need the rest of the benefits of iPhone ownership even if this is a big hassle for them), it emboldens Apple to think about what else they can eject in future phones (battery? camera? etc), further reducing costs (or fattening margin), further "thinner"ing future phones and enhancing revenue & profit-per-device by the add-on accessory sales for those that must have what USED to be built inside iPhones:
  • Apple already has a battery add-on accessory. It's not a great leap to imagine that becoming the "whole" battery in some future "thinner" phone.
  • Camera already protrudes so much some call it a "wart." Yet iPhones will only get thinner. Laws of physics are laws. How long until the Camera is ejected to an add-on accessory?
Seem insane? I can already hear the usual cast of cheerleaders re-assigning the same spin used in support of jettisoning the headphone jack... such as both battery & camera technology are more "antiquated" than the 3.5mm jack. Now everyone can choose whatever capacity battery they desire. My SLR shoots better quality pictures than any iPhone I've ever had, so why NOT get rid of the poorer quality, redundant camera 'I rarely use.' Etc. All they need to do that is to believe Apple is going to follow this ejection with either or both of those.

On the other hand, the external DAC is not automatically going to be better quality just because it's external. It seems likely that the average Joe won't be able to dig in deep enough to understand why the $30 dongle is much lower quality than the $300 dongle. So that Joe may actually have a lower quality DAC in his phone and a lower quality DAC converting the music to which he listens from digital to analog.

If so- and doesn't that seem likely?- the lower quality of audio playing through wired (via cheap DAC) will make the generally lower-quality of Bluetooth audio sound about as good. Cue sales of very profitable air pods and many praising how it sounds as good as a wired connection.

Geniu$$$$$
While your vision of iPhones to come sounds inevitable, it also sounds way too modular for Apple. Google just cancelled project Ara so they're learning the hard way that people just want phones that do a lot and simple to operate. No one wants to fiddle with modules like Legos except for geeks and power users. In order to get phones down to credit card thickness, Apple won't design modules, he'll just redesign camera sensors and lenses completely. They have the funds and about 10 years to get it done. There are no laws that cannot be engineers around when it comes to cameras and thinness but there are some business models that Apple will never implement. Others will but not Apple.
