I am in the market for a new iMac at this point. I think i'll wait until Mountain Lion comes out to see if they will update the iMac this year. I doubt they would waste time preinstaling old iMacs with Mountain Lion and redoing all current stock if they were going to update it say only a month after ML came out. If ML comes out and the old iMacs are still around, i'll make the jump :)

If indeed there is a "refresh" model of iMac coming out when ML comes out in July, then the question becomes "Is retina/complete redesign coming in 2013" and whether or not people should wait another year or so.

Have to agree with this post - Hackintosh is not for the faint hearted - you have to be a quite techy to take care of the whole thing. Also, whilst I can appreciate the frustration of waiting for a new iMac I'd hardly describe it as Apple holding people to ransom.
My first Mac was a Hackintosh over 6 years ago, and I still follow the scene. The reason it feels like I'm being held to ransom is because my 2008 iMac is fried.. probably graphics card or logic board, and I've been holding off buying a new machine (my only machine at home) in the hope of the refresh.

I have £2500 burning a hole in my pocket ready for a max'd out iMac but it'd be dumb to pay that for a machine with components that are a year old.

True. I can live with that though. I was never one for caring about the actual design, just the innards (why am i buying Apple products you ask? Ha). Retina display i can live without, plus having one on such a big screen would need a mega graphics card. i just don't want to buy a 2011 iMac now and then in a months time see that a new machine has come out designed for Mountain Lion with USB3, updated graphics etc.

Well I went ahead and bought one of those new fangled retina MacBookPros today. Still going to pick up an iMac when it is redesigned which will seemingly be next year. I think they are waiting for retina personally.

That used to be the case, but actually as Thunderbolt devices get cheaper, the issues will revert to CPU and GPU not being upgradable. Much the same as notebooks. The thunderbolt docks are a taste of what is possible.

As far as heat issues goes, that's true, but the new Intel processors are said to be cooler. GPU has always been an issue though, but not one that Apple cannot resolve.

I think selling old architecture on the iMac is not cool. Its time to upgrade at least that.

As for not having Firewire - how did people come up with that? If there is no Firewire, then I will buy a superceded iMac, because I want to use a new i7 iMac for lots of video capture and encoding. I've put that off for years, and I need firewire for the video camera connection. I also have a firewire RAID back-up. Most good externals are firewire ... so Apple will not drop Firewire with the new iMac.

or at least, for my next iMac.

I agree that they should either discontinue it or update it, or at the very least, drop the price on it to reflect the drop on price for those internal components which HAVE to be cheaper by now. Not doing so decreases the value of the machine that much further making it a rip-off.

As for not having FireWire; that problem appears to have been solved by Apple's Thunderbolt to FireWire 800 adapter. No FireWire, no problem! I still don't like it. I'd rather the ports I need be there without me having to buy an adapter or a converter cable, but at worst, there is no problem.

How easy is it to sell an apple computer?

I've never sold a computer before, obviously you have to be extremely careful about wiping any and every bit of memory but how can you be sure you're safe to sell it? Also what means would you use, where do you sell it and find out it's value?

If it's not too difficult to resell then maybe buying an iMac now and selling it maybe in 18 months time wouldn't be a bad idea.

Apple computers hold value much much better than other PC's. I am going to ask a few friends first, maybe post on Facebook and see if I get any interest. My MBA has 2 and a half years of Apple Care left so i will price mine a lil higher. But eBay is the best place to benchmark a price imho.
As for wiping it safely, I was going to ask on here about that once I find a buyer. Anyone got tips on how to do it completely safely? Last time I just did a system wipe, can't remember how I did it now but maybe someone can give me some tips on the best way to do it? Would be much appreciated.

Would you rather buy:
1) new non-retina 2.6 i7 MacBook pro with thunderbolt display, 16gb
2) new retina mbp, 2.6 i7, 16gb
3) 27" 3.4 i7, 16gb, 2gb graphics card, 1TB + 256 ssd.

I have a feeling most would say #3 since this is an iMac thread, but I'm struggling to decide.

Put in the OS X DVD* and boot from it. Open disk utility and wipe the drive with a 7-30 pass erase, then reinstall mac os. After the welcome video, turn the computer off. The person buying it from you will experience the mac as if it were brand new.

*This is gonna be a complete pain once ODDs are gone and horrid recovery partitions are the norm...

The wait is over

Well, boys, I finally caved, sold my 2007 iMac for $460, ordered a new 2011 iMac with SSD and extra ram from macsales.com.

I'll be happy with this machine for quite a while. Couldn't wait any longer, my business needed a new, faster machine.

Happy waiting.

Won't be too bad with SSD as the norm as well.

Doesn't change what I meant. The OS installation drive should be either on a DVD or on a USB flash drive. That way, you can boot independently of your main disk and wipe it, repartition it, etc.

you can still wipe the partition within the recovery partition...

Well, well, well... Now we're completely in the dark again as the 2013 comment does not apply to iMac's anymore.

Could mean two things:
1) Sooner update to the iMac, possible this July when ML is out.
2) iMac is getting killed off, replaced by MBP's and if you want more juice, Mac Pro's in 2013.
Number 1 for sure. The geekbench scores were leaked that were right for the MacBook pro so we will see a new iMac with nvidia graphics before end of summer.

My situation exactly as of today, since I bent my early 2008 MBP to hell and the lid no longer closes without force. I've got an iPad though, so I'm thinking that I'll still go with the iMac.

I am worried #1 is just a spec bump. Is this thread waiting for a spec bump, or a redesign?

1) Seems likely.
2) I really don't see this being a possibility. Too many creatives out there only need the iMac and not the MacPro tower. If they get rid of the iMac creatives only have a few options (especially given that the 17" MBP is being discontinued (read: less workspace):

(a) Cinema display + MacPro
(b) Cinema display + Mac Mini...definitely not ideal without a major update
(c) Cinema display + MBP or MBA
(d) Hackintosh...

All these options do not really cater to Apple's "simple" approach to their products. The iMac is an "all-in-one" solution that I just don't see them getting rid of. Plus, schools use iMac and now more and more corporations are allowing their employees to choose the desktop and platform of their choice.

Minimum:
Ivy Bridge (incl. slight cpu bumps)
USB 3.0
Cheaper SSD options

Would be nice:
More RAM included
Better GPU (BTO or standard)
New wired backlit keyboard to take advantage of USB3's power, providing two extra fully-powered USB3 ports (not likely)

Don't care at all:
Retina screen
Chin or lack thereof
Any further reduction in thickness
Touch screen
iPad dock

A backlit wireless keyboard would be HOT.
