Fine.
So the new imac (if it comes out in next days) will have a very poor improvement, as it was done for mac pro!?
We waited the longest period on imac's history and now for a real new imac we must wait till 2013. I need a new desktop, but it kinda sucks to buy something i waited long for and that will be updated seriously next year.
what do you guys think about this?
Will you buy the new imac even if the improvement is poor and a new imac is coming out in 2013?

The time between refresh has nothing to do with the magnitude of a refresh. This was also the longest refresh time for the Mac pro and it still doesn't have thunderbolt or USB 3. This is supposed to be a workstation. You also have to know that ivy bridge is a tick (small update) in Intel's CPU. Haswell is supposed to be much better then ivy bridge but I'm not sure how it will be on a desktop. I will buy a new imac when it is updated this year. I don't need the increased power management that Haswell has to offer on a desktop.

the problem is, when i first bought my macpro i wasent doing photography, editing or photoshoping, now i do alot of this as an extreme hobby everyday and I NEED the power AND screen estate value

This is very fustrating for me

English translation from Google. It make some sense but it could also be either fake or the New york time is trying to get publicity because Apple did not enjoy the article they wrote about worker conditions in China.

David Pogue of the New York Times claims to have learned from an unnamed manager Apple, that in 2013 new iMacs and new Mac Pro models will appear with a new design. The iMac model range has not been updated to today's keynote, the Mac Pro models are very quietly revised tentative, important features such as USB 3 or Thunderbolt are nowhere. For some time rumors are circulating that Apple is the Mac Pro set due to low sales. The iMac offers enough for most users of computing power and the majority of buyers requires no internal expansion cards, which can be only block in the Mac Pro. (cmk)

The problem with the current iMac and why I don't want to fork out $2000au is they have little future proof value.

The last of USB3 BT4 is why I don't want to buy one.

My current mini is an 06 1.83ghz Core duo, with the GMA950, its been good, but needs an upgrade.

If I want the next mac I buy to last the same 5 years plus it needs the above, and well the new Wifi protocol would have been good as well.

so? the wwdc is finished?
it doesnt last some days?

WWDC is on until the end of the week. It is a possibility that we see more releases this week.

I'm hoping for the same. I don't think we will see 802.11 ac. in new iMacs.

I want ivy bridge for USB 3 bluetooth 4 and some nice SSD options.

Just out of interest, why do you want Bluetooth 4 on a desktop computer in such a hurry? And I ask you this, is USB 3 reason enough to upgrade a whole product line with minimal other performance gains? I can't argue with your hankering of SSD! I share it. But if you REALLY wanted it, you could have your local Apple store business unit remove the ODD and install SSD in its place. So there is an option available.

So it comes down to Ivy bridge not really adding much in terms of CPU power. So less acute need to update. I am sure the iMac will updated. Question is when.

Not trying to be antagonistic here. I am just trying to make sense of yesterday's events so I can gauge what's coming next which will guide my purchasing decision. I could be wrong.

USB 3 and bluetooth 4 will future proof the mac for a longer period of time then the already old USB 2.0 and bluetooth 2.1+ EDR. Bluetooth 4 is supposed to be dramatically better on battery life. SO longer usage with keyboard and trackpad before swapping out the batteries.

My decision to wait is for a more future proof iMac, student pricing and hopefully some sort of nice SSD setup. I'd also wouldn't mind seeing a look that ressembles the TBD.

I have a feeling that the desktop macs (mac mini and iMac) will be updated with mountain Lion. We might also see a refresh TBD with USB 3.0 and faster TB.

IB CPU's aren't mind blowing but the support USB 3.0 In any case, I don't really need a computer before school starts.

1 month to go (to hackintosh)

Will wait 1 more month, then I'll build an hackintosh. It's ridiculous that 400 days have passed since last update on a consumer machine!!!!!

This was lifted from another forum (nods in the direction of appleinsider's @orange whip) and copied it here because in essence it articulates what many of us already know regarding Apple product cycles.

> Apple intentionally limits the product range and slows down the product cycle for a number of reasons (read the Steve Jobs book... its states it plainly

- to coincide with seasonal consumer trends
- they only change something when they have something better to replace it - the Mac Pro is great design - what competing product would you suggest is anywhere close to the Mac Pro.... hmm, I thought so....
- to simply tell the story - Apple makes 'insanely great' products not a bunch of crap.
- to make it easier for customers to select the product they need - go figure which Sony product or pre 1997 Apple product you need... it's bewildering
- it effectively and efficiently reinforces brand recognition

> Many Apple products have remained the same for far longer than competitors products. Apple has one style of keyboard and has had so for years, how many does microsoft have? Why do they need different styles? Why don't they just make one really good one?

This is a little hard to swallow. Apple has had the same sony chiclet key like keyboard for several years now. They have updated certain keys when necessary for new OS's and such. However Microsoft is first and foremost a software company. They also have several different companies making OEM keyboards. Each company has a different design philosophy but fundamentally they have the same keys. Third party mac vendors and Apple have different design philosophy's as well look at DAS keyboards they are quite different from what Apple is currently offering.

iMac is old technology

The technology in the iMac is not 400 days old, its more like 560 days old - you need to add the actual design-time and testing time (R&D) into the equation, hence the latest iMac incarnation was probably conceived in November 2010 with buildout beginning in March 2011 and actual production in May 2011.

Since the launch of the 2011 iMac, particularly in relation to the 27in model line-up, prices of OEM components have dropped substantially - given Apple usually have a 30% mark-up on the cost of their technology when initially launched, presently, it would not be wrong to claim that Apple are making a profit margin of 50% on any iMac sold today - that's known as a blatant rip-off!!!

the iMac line requires refreshing to the latest technology, or, if Apple intends only to refresh next year, a significant price drop.

Given Ivy-Bridge has been out for 3 months, motherboards for IB have been on sale for considerably longer, both AMD and Nvidia have upgraded GPU's and SSD prices have dropped - why is it so difficult to implement a few tiny changes to deliver a machine that is the equal of or better than the existing competition.

Like a fool I sold my one BTO 2011 iMac 27in i7 to upgrade to IB and better GPU - it transpires, I may have well hanged on to it or actually sold it for a higher price point - basically I feel sick in the stomach about the way Apple is treating its desktop range and seriously investigating a Hackintosh, where its seems the real action is now to be found!!!

Apple doesn't respect us anymore.
They say..don't worry, wait, and then look how good are we,BE HAPPY.
Patethic.

New models as the new ones seen on Mac Pro..
i mean Hashwell all around but Ivy on Apple?
I quit.
If Cook doesn't release anything ( words of mac ) for the end of July..
Apple is over for me.
ps.
Why don't we make a petition on facebook about imacs and desktops?
maybe joining the Mac Pro one?
Lets make pressure!!!!!:mad::p:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Like I said, not my writing, was merely passing on what I thought was a pertinent viewpoint from another board. Nonetheless, you can't ignore the stuff higher up in the post which you make no reference to. It makes sense.

Lets take the temperature of what we collectively think on the new iMac timelines. Poll below

yes the rest makes a rumors that I posted above points to a redesign for 2013. I hope they do a spec update in the meantime.

Really this is one of the main reasons people get so outraged about hardware cycles. Because we're all geeks and we try and double guess OEMs to allow us to get best bang for out buck and enable us to constantly have the latest tech. When we make a mistake in our guesswork (note the use of "we") we get all entitled and start acting like children! The reality is that if we had kept hold of our 2011 machines, we wouldn't be in such dire need of a new computer so wouldn't give a damn that the iMac hasn't been updated yet.

I say that knowing that some people are waiting to upgrade older machines BUT they somehow don't seem to be complaining as much as those who sold their machines in anticipation of an update.

I put this to you. If it wasn't an Apple computer, the depreciation would have been so much steeper that you wouldn't have the option of resale. Nor the software to allow you to migrate so easily which allows the almost annual upgrades without much fuss or financial cost.

Software provided by Apple that is. Lets celebrate the things that are good rather than bemoan our lack of forecasting skills

I didn't even want a retina screen, i wanted a slight spec bump, to get up to date. If that would have happened i would have placed my order yesterday, now i have to consider if i will buy a 2011, or wait.

No biggie though, a computer is just a computer, there's a nice summer coming, i'll be in the garden, barbecuing. Perhaps i will stick to Minecraft as far as games are concerned. Or perhaps i'll buy a 27'' i7 and throw 32gb in it. Depends on my mood. ;)

Personally I've been waiting for a GPU bump
