I think the screens would stay the same, 21.5 is easy for production. I was on the same fence two years ago and pushed out the extra for a 27inch and i love it. Blows away my old G5 20 inch imac lol.

I know, I know :)
That's why I mentioned my dad's opninion...
So, I think it will be the 27 one for me too. It is nothing more then some "dreaming" or so, nothing more, because I know Apple won't do any changes. Need to protect myself from making any illusion ;)
The USB3, instead, is indeed serious for me.

yeah ha. We need to put up the steve jobs distortion field. I was going to buy last years iMac but no USB 3.0 killed that. I am hoping a May-June release. USB 3.0, 2 Thunder bolt ports and 8GB of ram base would be a dream come true.

I'm going to other a new imac next week. I don't need USB 3.0 and an i7 with 16gb ram should be more than enough for what I'm doing so I'm just going to go for it.

I'm looking to buy an iMac. How much cheaper will the 2011 be once the 2012 comes out you think? Is it a better bang for the buck than waiting for the 2012?

My "iMac wait" dilemma lasted for about 2 weeks. My windows lap top was failing, but not dead yet. I lurked around on this forum for a while and absorbed all kinds of knowledge and opinions. Being that around my house I have access to apple computers and windows computers in working condition waiting until the next refresh was a viable option.

I can honestly express that my decision to purchase (3 weeks ago) was the absolute right decision. Using the this iMac is an amazing experience in comparison to what I was previously working with. If the refresh looks new and sleek cosmetically in Q2 2012? then I might be a tiny bit jealous of those who buy the new model. But, I feel that this reasoning alone did not warrant a 6-7 month drought on my part.

End the drought! For those who are having the dilemma..... end your drought!

I am so glad you are enjoying your new iMac, I switched in 2007, at age 58,never looked back. Loving the Apple experience!

- New designed, something sexy please :)
- USB 3 (a port or two on the side would be handy)
- Keep the ODD (cannot believe it takes much space and some of is use it!)
- An OS update that carefully manages SSD vs HDD (it's lame right now)
- Hmmmm.....
Can't think of much else, but truth is I will buy the next gen regardless. Strange: My iMac is now 2.5 years old, it performs perfectly in every way, but yes I will buy another one out of sheer passion.

iMac 30"

I think that Apple should make a 30" model of the iMac and make it resemble the cinema display like the same body as the cinema display that would be nice.:D

Stop using mobile graphics cards and laptop RAM, Ram speed at 1666hz (if thats correct), better GPU's that are not mobile versions obviously, better cooling system, 1080p iSight Camera. I understand why iMac's use mobile components, but it would be nice if they didn't.

See mac pro.

A decent graphics card these days takes up 2 expansion slots. How is that going to fit in an imac an be cooled properly?

Everyone can thanks me now if they wish. I just placed an order for my iMac so I fully expect a 30" retina display/Blu-Ray/USB 3.0/Ivy Bridge/Nvidia machine to be announced later this week.

You welcome. :)

New iMac to come whenever Mountain Lion is ready?

Since ML is a minor upgrade, I'm thinking there's no refresh design this year. Maybe Apple will save the big refresh for OSX 11?

No, iMac updates won't be tied to Mountain Lion. Like Lion & SL they might have a window for buyers who get it free/at a discount. Plus, would you hold off on a $1000+ purchase over a $30 upgrade you can get later?

Apple likes to sustain buzz. They can do this by spreading announcements throughout the year. A ML release in late August could contribute to that in the gap that used to be the iPod update timeframe (as iPods are a fading product, this would help).

Think they'll stick with 4GB. Personally that's OK for me, altough 8GB would be fun...
While typing this post, I looked around at some local online stores and it looks this is the time the shift is slowly going from 4GB to 8GB.
That 1* USB 3.0 I mentioned should be for the external HDD I bought a couple of months ago.

For now, I doubt about the SSD.
With the SSD I go for the 21,5, without, it'll be the 27. Have to keep an eye to the costs, because of my income which isn't that high....

I've been keeping an eye (i.e. obsessively checking) this post for weeks now and been thoroughly fed up.

I'd all but decided on a 2012 iMac but the waiting was doing my head in, and I started to notice some pretty bad screen burning on my 2010 iMac at work.

So yesterday I bought a new Macbook Pro on a whim, and think I did the right thing.

Been running a 2009 13" Core2Duo MBP with 4GB RAM, which is doing fine for its age, but as a heavy user & graphic designer it's just not snappy enough anymore. Was partly tempted to make the jump, and stick with a new MBP, by the resale value of my 13" - looks like I could get between £500-600 for it.

Went for a 15" 2.2 i5 with Hi-Res Antiglare in the end, and already scooped a 60GB Crucial SSD for the OS, optibay & 2x4GB RAM.

With a bit of luck all this kit will arrive this week, well exciting!

so i just read the post that Ivy Bridge will be delaying for dual core mobile pocessors. so it seems that as soon as Intel announces Ivy Bridge, we should see a refresh of the iMacs and MBPs. i am patiently waiting for the refresh of the iMacs. what are your thoughts on the release of Ivy Bridge processors that are said to be released on April 8th? will they actually release it then and will the iMac see an immediate refresh?

Looks so.
Everyone's situation is different. In my situation I'm not in the position I need a new computer fast because I'm having problems or so, or I can't wait.
I have a computer that works fine atm. When that is changing, I have to reconsider whether I can wait or not. When that's a 'no', I would have no problem with a Sandy Bridge-based iMac.

Hope you enjoy your MBP!

Absolutely. The time was right for me, the waiting had become overwhelmingly annoying - definitely a sign just to go for it, just like the many others in this thread.

I'm quite sure I will, thanks!

HD + SSD, what does it really do for you?

I know the SSD is much faster, but what advantage do you get by having both drives at the same time? Does the OS get put on the SSD for faster boot? Do you install apps to the SSD to have them load faster? It's a lot of $$$...

Everyone's situation is different.

You're very correct.

I am waiting for 2012 mainly in the hope for a cheaper upgrade to the SSD, also an upgrade to 1gb for the lower end 27inch would do me.

I have a feeling with the way how computing is going this maybe the last true desktop I ever buy.

Storage. SSDs have significantly less capacity, so ideally you put your OS, apps, and home directory minus media on the SSD, and use a HDD for file storage.

But how much faster will the OS and applications load? It seems like a lot of money for a speed boost. It's not like you get "instant on" just because the OS is on the SSD, right?

Don't worry, you'll be buying another desktop once that one becomes obsolete. That is . . . if you were talking about just having a fast machine.

If you were talking about the industry trend toward more tablets and laptops then yes . . . I see Apple turning the Mac Pro into a real niche machine if not just axing it all together after one more or two more revisions.

I would hate that.

But how much faster will the OS and applications load? It seems like a lot of money for a speed boost. It's not like you get "instant on" just because the OS is on the SSD, right?

Yup, it's a lot of cash but that speed is something that some users want. It's why I don't see SSDs becoming standard as well. The introductory price is still high even for lower end systems.

Then you have to consider that many users still need to hold GBs upon GBs of video, music, etc. Having a TB inside is much better than having 64GB inside and an external hanging around on top of your desk taking up space.

It's definitely much faster. I could talk about how much faster, but it's probably better illustrated by the endless number of YouTube videos showing SSD vs HDD. Here's a good one:

Everything loads way faster when there are no moving parts that have to spin up before data transfer can occur. The price is certainly justified... generally. The extra $500 for 256 that Apple charges for 256 GB is pushing it.

My external that I use for Time Machine backups sits tucked away in a cabinet and is out of plain sight. I'm a neat-desked, cable-hiding snob, so this was a big deal to me.
