According to the german news site Golem.de this delay only affects the ivy bridge processors for "ultrabooks" due to a possible release date of windows 8 and the bad sells of the first generation ultrabooks with sandy bridge.

So the quad core ivy bridge cpus for desktop computers could still come in April.

New iMac to come whenever Mountain Lion is ready?

Since ML is a minor upgrade, I'm thinking there's no refresh design this year. Maybe Apple will save the big refresh for OSX 11?

It's always made me wonder why Apple has been so picky with ports on the back of their iMac's and other computers. I realize the chipset has its limits, but why is it such a stretch to add a wealth of Thunderbolt, 3 USB 3.0, FW800, etc.? It's on the back of the computer anyways...doesn't look messy design wise. Often their attempt to choose the "right" ports to include leaves people frustrated and annoyed wishing they had a port they didn't include, or just ONE MORE of one they chose. If they over-indulge a bit, they might find many people very happy and satisfied. Just my take given what I read.

What I want to see the most, is a dedicated GPU instead of mobile. I realize the last 27inch iMac was excellent and had a very nice GPU, but it would be good to see a great mid-range card in there at the very least.

What's likely that I want:
Ivy Bridge
8GB Standard in 27inch Model
Updated GPU (dedicated would be great)

What's unlikely that I want:
3 Thunderbolt Ports - Might sound excessive but lots of people using iMacs for more intense professional use could use it. Biggest reason being not all thunderbolt peripherals have another port on them for daisy chaining, like a BlackMagic box. If you want a second display, box that lets me output to a professional color-correction monitor, you're full already. The only way to keep going is to buy Apple's display and not use a third-party one, so you have the extra thunderbolt port to daisy chain and that means $$$. I think a third port helps give users a failsafe unless they're using a certain combo of items that don't allow daisy chaining.

The next iMac will almost certainly have a new design - the timing lines up perfectly with previous redesigns. As to what it will look like...who knows. I have a mental image of an iMac that looks like an iPhone 4/4S (very pretty).

I wouldn't be too surprised if Apple dropped the optical drive from the iMac. Nor would I be shocked if they dropped the ethernet and firewire ports.

I guess we'll all find out soon enough.

EDIT: There may also be a new mouse and keyboard to better line up with the new design.

I'm starting to think there will be a new keyboard which could in turn point to a overall redesign.

Amazon (UK) has neither the wired or wireless keyboards in stock (some resellers do) and they havent had them for sometime. That perhaps suggests the discontinuation of those particular models.

I think it might look like the current cinema display but the bezel might be the same colour as the macbook air (silver).

I visualize it as a macbook air screen on a stick.

Retina Screen

Now i'm starting to think the redesign will include a Retina screen to match all the support for HiDPI we have seen.

iMacs, MacBook Pros... gonna get a redesign with razor sharp Retina Screen. Between that and the Ivy Bridge being held back, I don't expect the new iMac till the summer... bummer

Retina Screen
USB 3
Ivy Bridge
New SSD options

Fastest iMac ever ;)

I'll wait... no rush

All Macs in 2012 needs to have SSD drives standard for the boot/application drive.

Get rid of the optical and make it optional. Those funds saved should purchase 64GB of SSD storage in a blade configuration.

Next add Bluetooth 4.0 and new BT 4.0 Keyboard, Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad.

For the iMac design a height adjustable stand.

I honestly highly doubt that we'll be seeing a retina display on something as large as 27 inches.

Nor would I be shocked if they dropped the ethernet and firewire ports.

Let's hope they fix the wireless dropping out issue first (or it could just be my crappy router ;) )

It's going to be a long, frustrating wait for this update.... The cash is burning a hole in my pocket already :apple:

I could see most of what you said, but i highly doubt they drop the ethernet port.

They wouldn't drop Firewire, to many audio interfaces and external drives are firewire.

I'm close to just ordering an Imac now, the taught of having to wait 2-4 months is killing me!

Stop using mobile graphics cards and laptop RAM, Ram speed at 1666hz (if thats correct), better GPU's that are not mobile versions obviously, better cooling system, 1080p iSight Camera. I understand why iMac's use mobile components, but it would be nice if they didn't.

I can understand if you're on a much older generation iMac, but I'm on the 1st generation 27 i5 + 16GB + a brand new HDD. I can honestly wait another 6 months (I wouldn't prefer that) for the new iMac, but like I said, if you're on something older it could make sense.

2.4 GHZ Intel Core Duo Macbook Pro with 4 GBs of Ram. It still works perfectly but trying to process large signal chains in Logic with CPU eating plugins is a nightmare not to mention trying to edit split screen videos. I'd be more than happy with what you have at mo.

I might be purchasing my first Mac this weekend, an iMac 27".

With the Ivy Bridge being delayed would be most likely see the new Mac's sometime over the summer? While any improvements would be great, the only one that I would kick myself missing out on is a much higher resolution display. The rumored retina display on the upcoming 10" iPad isn't that much off from the 27" iMac's. (2048x1536 vs 2560x1440)

That being said, I was really taken by the image on the 27" iMac. I got to see one in a Best Buy a few weeks ago but if they doubled the current iMac resolution that would painful to miss out on.

Well if you're getting by and think you can wait then I would. But, if you're hair is falling out and your tired of the sluggishness, then by all means, get something now.

This will be my first Apple computer.
However, these are my thoughts when it comes to the 2012 iMac.
I hope there will be at least 1 USB3 port.

I keep on thinking about which model to choose, the 21,5inch or the 27inch, while I'm currently working on a 23inch screen.
I'm quite scared when I buy one the 21,5 would end up a little too small and the 27 a little too large for me, making it such a disappointment.
I have been to the local reseller with my dad and he says I should buy the 27. Just like some other people I asked about this "issue" I'm having. But I still don't know which one to buy...
That's why I hope Apple gives the 21,5 inch model a little bump to 22 or 23 inch.

Changes in design and other changes, like the ODD, are not that important for me.

I think the screens would stay the same, 21.5 is easy for production. I was on the same fence two years ago and pushed out the extra for a 27inch and i love it. Blows away my old G5 20 inch imac lol.

The number of pixels doesn't really matter - dots per inch (dpi) and how far you are from the display is what matters. I don' believe you will see a significant increase in dpi with the next release of the iMac.
