I'm holding out

Well, I've been waiting a month for the new iMacs. I'm gonna wait it out. Here's why I think it's worth waiting: (not all of these are confirmed or probable but are things I'm hoping for)

USB 3.0 (probable)
Cheaper SSD (high demand, probable)
Anti glare glass (very probable, and I live in a house with big windows)
Bigger screen sizes (not probable, there is demand for them)
More ram standard on high end 27" model (possible)
3gb graphics memory's with new amd's (probable)
Ivy bridge processors (confirmed)

The way I see it is that I'm spending a HUGE amount of cash on a computer that I expect to use for 5-6 years. Things like USB 3.0 might actually be useful a couple years down the road. Years from now will I look back and think that the month or two of extra waiting was really so bad? I don't think so.

Now, there is the possibility that it won't really be worth it but I doubt it. If I'm gonna get a 2011 iMac, I'm getting it after the 2012 ones come out and getting it for less.

My 2011 setup I. Want to get (I will get the equivalent of the 2012 most likely)

27" iMac
8gb of ram
1tb HDD (Mabey add a 256gb SSD)
I7 2600k processor
Amd (I forget what it's called) GPU with 2gb of memory (the high end one)
AppleCare (cause if I'm spending $2800 on a computer its gonna get all the warranty it can)

I too was/am looking into getting the top of the line iMac with upgrades on:

+ Processor
+ Graphics Card
+ AppleCare

RAM I'll upgrade from elsewhere where it's cheaper.

One question I have though - historically, do Apple keep the same price points for their iMacs?

For the most part they do. It may be $100 more or less, but most of the time it's either the same, a little less, or a whole lot less.

I remember the top end 20" iMac (lampshade) starting out at $1999.

Sorry if this has been discussed but what are the rumors for GPU options for the 27" models?

6990M for the low end and 7970M for the high end?

7970m will almost certainly be BTO but definitely an option. The stock GPU will just be one of the lower variants of the 7000 series.

I would get the ram replaced third party, heck I'd replace it myself but I believe it voids the 3 year AppleCare I'm buying.

Ivy Bridge public release today, AMD 7970m is suppose to be released tomorrow, so I would say that we're right around the corner.

I'm really stoked actually because this will be a significant upgrade from my first generation 27 i5.

Changing RAM does not void the warranty and is quite simple actually.

I shall be listening semi-intently but am not expecting any great revelation.

I plan on Just having it playing in the background and listening for anything. I know there is prob nothing but still..... Intels new processors, amd's new graphics and a confrence from apple on the same day. I can't pass it up.

Also I should mention I'm getting it almost free. It's a college fund thing. I'm getting about $2000 from it for the Mac. So I might as well get it from apple.

I'm running a first gen i3 350m in a hp g62 laptop. So huge performance upgrade for me.

My first Mac but I have an iPad 2 and an iPad touch 4th

While we're waiting let's list off a few thins we WISH we're coming to the iMac but WON'T

Blue ray disk player
32" screen- retina of course
Comes standard with 1tb SSD (is that even possible?)
Gosh I wish I could tell apple what to put on them....

Why BTO? The high-end 2011 iMac has a 6970M just like the BTO option. The BTO just increases the RAM to 2GB.

Woah sorry, I was wrong. It's tomorrow! Mabey they will incorporate it in with the Mac release. Idk.

How do you listen in? I see "Streaming audio requires iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod touch® running iOS 4.2 or above, any Mac® running OS X 10.5 or above or any PC running QuickTime 7 or later."

Is there an app to download?

the 27 vs 21.5 debate

Ok guys, what are your final thoughts, for web design:

1)27" imac

2)21.5" imac and an extra 21/24" monitor.

I'm starting to think that the second option is more feasible cost wise and might give me even more space to work but the ooh ahh of the 27inch has a certain draw to it.

Seconded, 27" all the way for anything related to design/content creation..

What I want?

The top of the range iMac to have an SSD and an HDD included in the off the peg price.

Second that. An SSD large enough to hold the OS and speed critical apps, with an HDD to hold non-critical apps and data/media.

And . . . could we show some progress in the RAM department, too? How about 8GB, yes? It took Commodore Business Machines 3 years to go from 64Kbytes to 128Kbytes, and the iMac has been at 4GB since 2009, so . . .
