So we now know that the CPU and GPU will be available this week. When do you think Apple will launch this dream machine? I would imagine they would want to launch it asap to take full advantage of the new hardware. Anyone good at taking correlations from the past and applying it here?

Don't understand how people have short memories, was only a few years back apple were releasing iMacs with C2D still. Sooner people realise apple do what they want and when the more people wont be disappointed.

If they wanted to release high end iMac with ivy bridge and keep low end sandy they will do this. They know people will still buy the machine. Doubt this will happen but showing apple are not always looking to follow the latest they go with what they want, not what the masses want or expect.

Heya

Ivy Bridge is not a huge change from Sandy bridge.
If people really want the latest wait for the tock..

I think there is zero chance of a redesign. Surly by now we would have pictures all over the Internet of new iMac components? If there was going to be a change in form factor or screen size, I don't think apple could have kept it under wraps.
Faster processers, bigger standard hard drive, OOD dropped for a SSD as standard (but I doubt it) and maybe a little something else we are not expecting.

While I wouldn't go as far as "all over the internet," I think the premise is correct. I would expect to have heard at least rumors of a redesign by this point as Apple would be/have already made prototypes and updating certain parts of the manufacturing process.

Take the case of the anti-glare glass. That does not constitute a redesign but a simple swapping out of the type of glass that is used. It would be much easier to notice a change in form-factor than a change from "glare" to anti-glare glass. Because we have heard of the latter and nothing of the former, I don't think a more substantial redesign is in the works.

I am not against a redesign, and it may still happen, I just don't think it should be expected at this point (i.e. that shouldn't be a major reason why one is holding out for a 2012 iMac).

I'd like a low cost 27" iMac using the hd4000 IGP. With an ssd I'd have a low btu system to replace my Mac Pro 1,1 that could serve up media to my iOS stuff. I've given up on Mac gaming (even bootcamp) so no longer care what version of anemic mobile gpu they use.

you must be pretty stupid. there is not one soul waiting for 2012 imacs because of the cpu, not one. you here are all talking about ivy bridge. who cares about ivy bridge?? do some research and see what the 2012 imac brings. there is one other very important component that will see 50% boost. who cares about cpu and its 10% power boost. to me, those who arent waiting are idiots.

Not idiots, business people with a business to run and deadlines to meet!

I couldn't give a flying f... about waiting. My work demands that I have a new machine now so don't suggest for one second that we are idiots for not waiting...some people can't, you ignoramus!

Intel's Ivy Bridge chips launch using '3D transistors'

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-17785464

As advanced as Ivy Bridge sounds, the one thing it is not is future-proof. Intel has already begun to discuss its successor, dubbed Haswell.

"We are targeting 20 times better battery life on standby - always on, always connected," Mr Skaugen said about the update, due for release in 2013.

"So you can get all your files and emails downloaded onto your PC while it's in your bag, and still get more than 10 days of standby and all-day battery life."

That's not entirely relevant for a desktop though is it?

Do you sleep or on here 24/7? lol

Anyway go through this thread and see how many quote laptop features for the up and coming IMac the main point of my post was to say it said Ivy Bridge it was released
Either way Ivy is not a major improvement over Sandy. You do know that

BTW, off topic but i know people are interested Diablo 3... Diablo 3 is now open beta!

Heh, I couldn't run either Diablo 3 OR Diablo 2 on my machine. Diablo 3 needed a better graphics card than the Radeon x1600, while Diablo 2 wanted Rosetta, which is not on this machine.

I kind of forgot just how old Diablo 2 is. It's original release worked with 3dfx Glide! In that time, Apple has gone from 32-bit MacOS 9 on a G3 to 64-bit MacOS 10.7 on an Intel i5. And my system was released right in the middle of that change.

yeah, great, some people can afford to wait and according to you they are all either fan boys, quite mad or just plain stupid.

So my analogy about a cars top speed being effectively redundant stands because the current iMac i7 will go much quicker than I need, so unless you need a minor improvement in speed I think anyone hanging out for a new one is either a mac fan boi who wants the latest, quite mad or just plain stupid!

let me remind you about one of the improvements ivy bridge macs bring:

7970m=2x6970m (1, 2)

so i can afford to wait, and i can get 2x performance for the same amount of money in a couple of weeks, or a month, and i'm an idiot, fanboy and quite mad? thank you

in the end, youre the one buying a year old technology for a premium price, not me

Heya

Just to make it clear, Ivy Bridge is not the AMD Graphics 7970...

So any mac or pc using AMD 7970 is able to use to get that points.

Not arguing here but you say buying one year old tech for premium prices. Apple in 2009 releasd iMac's with top end i5 &i7 the base iMacs were C2D, So having a Sandy Bridge iMac is still great& powerful, indeed. Plus the GPU has nothing to do with ivy bridge.

It's only recently Sandy bridge I think became the 1st hardware Apple imployed all over its mac line, making it powerful and ip to date compared to previous releases of mac in terms of hardware. The sandy bridge iMac chip is a year old.
Apple used C2D for about 4 years, When they could of jumped to I5/I7 on all ranges. So people are just spoilt now. Computers now ship with more power than one needs so you could buy anytime if I'm being honest, USB 3.BLUETOOTH 4.0 Doesn't mean much to a professional Although some would wait to have latest. (NOT ME) each to their own.

Each to their own, nothing wrong with waiting or buying now. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions as its their money. Don't understand the constant bickering over a computer. More important things in life. Everyone just calm down please

its not okay when someone calls you an idiot for doing a pretty sane thing.

The new iMacs will bring power saving and two times graphics performance.

Oh and definitely a touch screen!!! ;)

Hey, if you want to buy a SB iMac, and then buy a 7970m and attempt to install it in said SB iMac, be my guest. The rest of us will be here waiting for the results.

I'll be one of the people doing this, I like to mod iMacs and will curiously see if an upgrade path is available. Yes you might say it's futile and not worth the effort but for users of 2011 iMacs in 2014 it will be nice to know what upgrade options are available.

theoretically it is possible, as far as i know 6970m and 7970m share the same mxm 3.0 standard, so if we see 7970m in new imacs (os x support) it shouldnt pose a problem. it will cost around 600 usd i think

I'm sure it's possible. The 7970m benchmarks that came out were based on doing this to last year's Alienware M14x. Although, filing was involved.

If you're doing it as a modding enthusiast, enjoy and good luck. But for someone who buys iMacs specifically because they couldn't be bothered taking computers apart and upgrading components, this path doesn't make much sense. :)

None of us will know until I try. It's not just a case of getting the part and slotting it in because OSX will have the drivers, we have EFI to contend with, we need to see if it can be flashed, if the Alienware versions of the card have the same available space to accommodate the EFI as the Apple 7970m part. We have to check heatsink bracket alignment and also temp sensor connection.

All said it will be an interesting project.

If the graphics are the only change bar Ivy bridge power saving, we're in for a dull upgrade IMO.

Couldn't agree more but one user group you have left out, you covered the no hassle upgrades group, covered the will not upgrade components just buy new machine group. One group remains, the group that loves the aesthetic of the iMac design but rather than purchase another machine they will eek all life out of the existing one, if it can go another 2 years after the initial 3 with upgrades then people often upgrade parts, you'd be surprised at the user base who do this.

On the 2009 iMacs alone over 60,000 people have viewed my SSD install tutorial on MacRumors, not to say that 60,000 have installed but it's a rather large following none the less, consider my guide is one of many and it's a large group of Mac users that tinker with their existing iMac.

Thanks for reading.

its good to know there are other ways of upgrading sans buying a new computer. ill definitely be one of your followers in a couple of years ;)

To everyone who couldn't get the diablo 3 beta running due to "unsupported graphics card" there is a fix! There is nothing wrong with your hardware/drivers, Blizzard is just locking us out !

http://www.diablofans.com/topic/280...cause-this-card-is-missing-required-features/

Page 2 is the fix, changing 2 values in a txt document and we're in !

Abit late maybe seeing as the beta is over now, but I got the beta running (and ran like a dream on low settings) on my X1600M 128mb.
