Roger that, but I don't typically make large purchases with the mindset of incurring immediate extra expense to get what I really want.

It's just that the iMac has been stuck at 4GB for so long it's beginning to feel "640K-ish".

But yeah, if 4GB is still the 'minimum', for less than $50 it can be tripled to 12GB.

Nobody will ever need to access more than 640k

Why are people obsessed with a slimmer iMac? Do you carry yours about a lot? I'd much rather if they did dump the ODD (and I would prefer they didn't) thet used the extra space for more kit like extra USB ports, SSD drive and other things. Yes you can buy an external but doesn't that defeat the object of an all in one? I've already got to have a printer, time capsule and modem on my desk. How about a airport extreme built in? Now that would be cool!

First what do you need more USB ports to? (Everything that comes from Apple is wire less and you can buy staff whith Apples Air support)!!

Second Airport is already buillt in so what the purpos whit building in an extra devise?

Everything from apple is wireless? What about the phones, cameras printers etc that we all use. Not everything is wireless. The airport in an iMac does as I understand it does not have the same functionally as the extreme.

Ok maybe not everything but most of the stuff included in the iMac's like keyboard and mause/trackpad that used to use USB-ports are wireless. Like I sed you can buy airprinters and alot of other things that use the air support like airplay sterio and so. Whit that I don't mean you don't need more ports but i beleave you can use the place for those on better things.

For me, i don't care if the new iMac is slimmer, but i'd like the wasted space of the ODD to be taken up by something i'll actually use.

I hate wireless mice/keyboards. Add an external USB hard drive, external 1080 webcam for making YouTube videos, My Hauppauge for recording Xbox gameplay, etc. That alone is 5 ports i need.

Whilst I would love user comfogurable parts. I think the general trend at Apple is towards less user control. I wouldn't be overly shocked if they stopped us upgrading the RAM. I would reconsider buying it if that happned though.
And I hope it is a redesign. Lack of parts leaks worries me though.

Is noise level anything to be worried about, considering the thermal paste that has been added to the new Ivy-Bridge processors and makes their core significantly hotter? Or is it the other way around, that because the heat is restricted to the processor core the temperature of the iMac overall will decrease?

Who cares if they stop us upgrading the RAM? Easy solution - when you buy the iMac, spec it out with maximum RAM. Then you won't ever need to upgrade it...

The ones who care are: The people who don't want to pay 500% overprice for the RAM from Apple themselves.

Well, you have to draw a line somewhere. We can't go back to the giant beige boxes which even had user replaceable bios chips, either.

screens that don't go all murky
burners that don't fail on one of the lenses

Based on the post from the Front Page today that shows the next MBP not having FireWire, does anyone know if there is an adapter I could use for my FireWire 800 External HDD that would go from FW->USB3 or Thunderbolt if it will also be removed from the next iMac?

I certainly hope the new iMacs retain FireWire. Apple's back and forth with FireWire, despite being significantly better than USB2 has pretty much convinced me to choose USB3 this time around (instead of TB) I think. I can't deal with the idea of Apple getting sick of things and dropping support.

Mister Bumbo is dead on here.

Occamsrazr, let me guess you have more money than you know what to do with. Feel free to send some of that money you want to throw away in my direction. Consider this. I picked up 16GB (2x8) for $83. Add that to my original 4GB and I have 20GB for an upgrade price of $83 and it works flawlessly. Apple wants $600 for 16GB on a BTO 2011 iMac. So, you think, I should spend $517 more for 4GB less. Wow.

Ok, so spending $3000 on a computer with the same specs as would cost $700 if it were running windows is ok, but spending $300 extra on RAM is not?

Please, explain to me this rationalization you have twisted yourself into. Basically its like this... I like Apple products and I'll pretty much buy them as long as they stay reliable and keep on "just working". User upgradable RAM or not...

I'm guessing you buy a warranty on your $50 DVD player too?

Some people have enough cash to be reckless with it, the rest of us need to find ways to make it stretch a bit farther.

I will not argue against apple prices being somewhat inflated but to say you can find a $700 pc that matches the specs of a $3000 BTO iMac is straight BS and you know it. Even if you can find something close, it wouldn't be an all in one PC. Prove me wrong.

As far as my rationalization, I figured out upgrading the ram myself was the way to go in the first 20 minutes of researching my iMac purchase. Add another 20 minutes to find and purchase the ram online and then 5-10 to install it. So, I saved myself over $500 in less than an hour of total time. This is practically the definition of a no brainer. I am sure this would be a complete waste of your time since you make over $500 an hour, right?

wait what...?

Did you just try use 'logic' to argue that spending $500 on RAM is more rational than spending $100 on the same amount of RAM? Because at its fundamentals that is what this is about.
