In Anandtech's latest review of ASUS ultrabook utilising the Ivy bridge dual-core low votage chip, he made mention of something peculiar that could explain why all the OEMs haven't been able to release their machines until late May:

"The circumstances around today's launch are a bit peculiar. Intel has an embargo in place on the as of yet unreleased Ivy Bridge CPUs, this applies to both notebooks and desktops"

Could it be that embargo is what has been holding Apple back from unveling its new machines? Does that mean we're now getting closer?

Me too!

all this waiting is seriously killing me...
Imo apple would definately make more money by anouncing the imac 2012 release date cause those who dont want to wait that long would buy now and the other would wait anyway...
at this point everybody is waiting for an update and nowbody knows how long it will be...

I couldn't say it better. Also I am waiting to replace to Mac for the first time, I simply can t stand windows, and in this year apple decided that they are going to take their biggest waiting time for Mac ever!
Apple if you read this :get the iMac out!! :) or at least send a hint until what date we have to wait. I am not going to buy the 2011 model anyway......

I so agree!!

Also

In the Last product iterations apple used words like:
"best product ever","you will be amazed" and so on, while the products in the last 2 years are simply the same stuff but with better hardware. Not that I am not happy with the products, but there is no correlation anymore between the bombastic words and the actuall products.

So knowing that apple is usually very conservative in design ( after the new product is out) and usually don't change concept of presentations, I think that we won't see any new Mac on wwdc, we will see ios 6 and mountain lion. That's it.

Hope I am wrong. But giving the last iteration, iPad 3 ( just better screen) iPhone 4s( same phone basically), apple tv3( same product ).
I guess again " the thing you all been waiting for" is simply iOS 6....

Aaaaargh

I've been waiting for the new iMac for months.. and now my 2008 iMac has literally just died. Looks like the screen is fried.

I wish they'd hurry the hell up and just bring out the model already.

Memzee, my 2008 iMac died with a fried screen (actually graphics card, probably) in mid March...

Been waiting since :-( Thank god for an iPad and laptop from work.

As mentioned in the article, this only goes for some chips: the ULV dual-cores, which wouldn't be used in any products besides the MBAs.

Occamsrazr, I'm having to make do with a 2007 black macbook at home til then [first world problems lol].

It's not even about wanting to have the latest specs that's stopping me from buying the current model. The price they charge for the SSD + 2TB option is ridiculous.

I had something somewhat similar happen about a month ago. I have a 2007 iMac (the first aluminum iMac) that I bought in early 2008. What happened was the screen started flickering/flashing but nothing came of it, then a few weeks later it did it again but this time about a third of the screen went dim. It's still perfectly usable, but a third of the screen is darker/dimmer than the rest.

It's looking like WWDC is when we will find out, although it could be earlier but most likely WWDC if not. Thankfully WWDC is soon and hopefully the new models are available immediately or within a week.

For the love it better be WWDC or earlier. My 06' iMac has had a couple of trips to the Genius Bar to replace the logic board and video card, but it's currently working just fine (it's been over two years since the last repair). My problem is it's old and doesn't play the games I want. I still haven't played D3 because I'm waiting for this infernal new iMac to be released. I've been having to avoid anything D3 related to avoid spoilers. Please, please release the new iMac soon Apple.

Actually some of the things that I read here on iMac is quite disturbing, people that own an iMac from 2008 and 2007 complain about the reliability of the screen and the general product . And want to replace it with 2012 model.
As a windows guy ( who wants to make the change) this statements kinda turn me off from buying iMac, I have no intention to replace iMac every 4 years. A really expansive machine like this should last at least 7 years if not more. My pathetic dell laptop + 19 inch monitor is running more then 6 years now with no special problems ( aside from the fact that it's slow and windows based)
So tell me if this statements are just singular dots in a quality universe? Or the iMac is known for not being a reliable product ( something I found really hard to believe)

I think that it's not Macs don't last for 7 years, its more because Mac owners love their Mac so much and can't resist to wait that long to get their hands on a brand new generation of computer that is better suited for their current needs. If your 7 year old pc still runs, your new iMac will run just as long.

i've been waiting too for so long ..
since 2007 ...00
in 2007 i decided to wait a little but...
you know ,then, the crysis started to hit
first in the people's attitude and then in our incomes..
here in Italy..
next September our thief in chief Mr Monti will raise
taxes by 2 points more...i hope to buy my new 2012 mac
before that ...but i cannot hope Apple to look
at my needs...even if this waiting is really killing me
and my 2006 macbookpro is about to die..

For those of us who depend on our macs for our livelihoods, it's common to turn over machines every two years - has nothing to do with a lack of reliability, but rather the hardware/software leapfrogging that allows us to do more with our machines. Many of us getting pretty frustrated that upgrade time has come round, and there's no product...

My 2007 iMac still runs beatifully. Ive only had to replace a dead hardrive. I use it for 3D programs, but now that i'm getting into a more advanced level I need a much better computer.

Absolutely nothing wrong with my 2007. Never been in the shop for anything. Screen still beautiful, no HDD or ODD problems, everything's fine, All that I've done to it is install new RAM.

I just want something with 2012 specs so it can run 2012 software.

I think that we won't see any new Mac on wwdc, we will see ios 6 and mountain lion. That's it.

That's possible. All Tim Cook said during the earnings call was that we would have new Macs this fiscal quarter. That means, technically, they have three weeks after WWDC in which they could release them. It doesn't seem logical that Apple would get a whole pile of industry pros in a room and leave them nothing to talk about except LAST year's technology, but yes, technically what Cook said doesn't preclude that from occurring.

I would have strongly expected 5/15. Didn't happen. Now I can't see why they would do it any other week than WWDC, out of the weeks that are left. Marketing says you make the most of whatever attention you've garnered.

Well, what he said was that Macs would contribute a higher % of revenue this quarter. That not only means new Macs, but new Macs released early enough that the sales of the new more than make up the difference of the slower sales of the old leading up to the refresh. Seems to me that June 11 might already be too late to achieve that, and it certainly couldn't be later. Of course it's possible that some kind of component supply or software driver issue will delay the release and make a liar out of Cook...

I don't think he's referring to those that upgrade because they want to. I think he's referring to all the actual references to macs that have actually died and had to be repaired or replaced (see below).

In all my life, I've only had 1 PC break down on me to the point where I couldn't use it. And that was probably just a fried hard drive that I could have easily replaced if I knew as much about computers then as I do now.

Hearing all these stories about macs breaking down and becoming thousand dollar paper weights only a few years after purchase doesn't fill me with confidence in the Apple brand. Especially when my only other Apple product (a 2008 ipod video) crapped out on me 2 years after buying it.

Well if you want the other side of that, I have a first gen MBP (2005) that is still going strong. Only thing I ever had go wrong with it was the charging cable fraying.

If you're not convinced a Mac is for you get something else. If you want a user replacable Mac get a Mac pro.
