actual references to macs that have actually died and had to be repaired or replaced (see below).

In all my life, I've only had 1 PC break down on me to the point where I couldn't use it. And that was probably just a fried hard drive that I could have easily replaced if I knew as much about computers then as I do now.

Hearing all these stories about macs breaking down and becoming thousand dollar paper weights only a few years after purchase doesn't fill me with confidence in the Apple brand. Especially when my only other Apple product (a 2008 ipod video) crapped out on me 2 years after buying it.

In accounting terms, IT equipment is fully depreciated in 3 years max. So economic net worth should be zero. By contrast, Macs, can probably keep c50% of economic value after three years so that tells you something in my view.

And from the general observation to the specific, albeit anecdotal, I have had a 2007 Macbook Pro, heavily used doing all sorts of things including video editing and database management. Worked absolutely faultlessly until I decided to sell it 12 months ago to part fund a macbook air purchase.

Just do yourself a favour and follow your heart. Buy an iMac and you will not regret it

Can someone clarify for me what Apple stores will stock? I want the top end 27" with the best video card - is that a BTO configuration and only available for order online?

I'm sure we've all seen the news by now! And being Australian I'm glad of the convenience of having the new beast's retail price in my local currency (not that spending a few minutes converting it would have been that laborious).

BUT! Time for some more speculation to kill the time. We have a price rise. What are your thoughts on the reason for this? Inclusion of standard SSD? Retina?

It's gotta be SSD. MBP has a much higher price jump, that looks like Retina.

Yeah that's very true. Can we expect any kind of meaningful resolution bump? Hell, I'd be perfectly happy with the SSD, as well as some of the other commonly cited components (USB 3.0, 7970m, ivy bridge etc.), though I certainly wouldn't complain if we had some more pixels thrown in. Given the price of the top MacBook pro, I can't even imagine what the damage would be on a 27" retina iMac. I really don't think I'd shell out that much dough.

yeah i'm not looking forward to a price raise. i hope that it stays around the same. i have enough saved up for a basic 21 inch one currently but wanna wait for the new ones.

The fact, that a new USB-SuperDrive will be anounced too could be a hint that they removed the ODD....

I'm gonna guess the prices are less tax, if not the new macs are cheaper than the current line when converted in to real money, the base comes in at £862

Sorry, I am being dim. What is the exact price rise for the iMac range?

According to appleinsider, the prices are before tax as you also suggest. Add 10% tax to that (is that the Aus sales tax?) and you get to about the current price (£999 for entry level). I would be very surprised if in this economic climate, they pushed through a price increase

Ahh, but we Brits have the privilege of paying 20% tax. So sounds like a little bump to just over £1k. Hopefully it will be well justified. Looking forward to my fist ever mac, if only so I can take my windows box outside and introduce it to the lawn mower :)

Had a quick work out of the prices in GBP with Vat added on at 20%

Airport Express £91.5
MacBook Pro £1921.52
MacBook Pro £2458.80
iMac 21.5 £1037.27
iMac 21.5 £1298.40
iMac 27 £1537.06
iMac 27 £1921.52
MacBook Air £845.04
MacBook Air £960.37
MacBook Air £1037.27
MacBook Air £1298.70

Mac Pro £2305.98
Mac Pro £3636.24
Mac Pro £2767.33

Obviously Apple will make the pricing simpler by rounding up or down but this gives a rough idea :)

That means I can no longer afford the highest iMac... the others better not have crappy GPUs.

There is a price jump on the top end iMac. All the others are within A$50 of the current prices on the Australian webshop.

There is a A$200 price jump on the top end iMac - I am hoping that is because it comes with an SSD as standard.

It would be a bit of a disappointment if it were the only one with an SSD as standard. :S
