I'm quite mad that my broken-ass iPhone 6 Plus basically forces me to upgrade this year during what is shaping up to be an incredibly lackluster cycle. There's not a single 'headline-grabbing' feature in all of these rumor roundups that make me excited to possibly upgrade from a five year old phone - how on earth is that possible? Every remotely cool new feature appears to have been pushed back to 2020.

It's a 5 year old phone, what do you expect.

If the iPhone 11 doesn't grab you then get a 6S+, 7+, 8+, X or XR for less money.

Same old iPhone...nothing new and nothing to see here...move on people. no for real now...wtf? Thinking about buying an XS now when it's getting cheaper.
Apple is even removing features now and I bet the will be more expensive than the last years one. Go home Apple and rethink your strategy.
Seems like the more hubris the better the sales (for reference see notch). So this is a good sign.:D

Now that Ive is going/gone, Apple just make the phone thick enough to make the cameras flush, it'll still be as thin as we really need and want it to be.

Use that extra space for further battery and display improvements and you can stick as many cameras as you want on the rear.

That's my point, I expect there to be at least one marquee feature that makes upgrading exciting after half a decade.

There's a few.

New
3D Touch
FaceID
Hey Siri
Wireless charging
Water/dust resistance
True Tone
Stereo Speakers
Fast Charging
Taptic Engine

Improved
Display
RAM
Cameras
CPU
GPU
Bluetooth
Wi-Fi
GSM
Sensors

On one hand, the extra camera is a really nice feature and one that I could definitely use. On the other hand, that hump is ugly as hell. hopefully case makers will have cases that minimize the ugliness.

I have an Xs, and I don't plan on upgrading - these iPhones are too expensive, and so for the most part its a moot point.

As for the design language being used, its a non-s version of the iPhone, and I guess to some degree I'm disappointed that we're not getting anything different. I'm sure Schiller will be showing off how fast the new Ax processor is, and how it can compute the mass of the universe in milliseconds, but for a phone I don't need that. Other makers have moved away from the notch, others have introduced under the glass fingerprint readers. I'm seeing some level of innovation, for apple fans, we have to wait longer. 2020 is the rumored time that the notch may go away.

I see less bold moves under cook, though I will say the trash can mac pro was as bold of a move as you can make, but overall they seem to play it pretty safe more often then not. Seeing that we're looking at another minor revision (other then the 3 camera system), its kind of a ho hum update.

Apple is the best at marketing, and they will package this up in a way that will make it look sexy and people (even me) will want it, but before I get sucked into the RDF, I'll offer my opinion ;)

There’s going to be a big laugh when this phone is unveiled. Laughing if the phone has a bump. And laughing if it really doesn’t and people swallowed this bump story hook line and sinker.

Anyone feel like showing up out front of the launch to protest against these hideous designs that keep coming? It’s about time something like that happens.

Yes it’s definitely a big real world problem that deserves people to get up on arms and protest. I am sure this people are the same that feel like it’s right and go out and protest about children die of hunger every minute, global warming, war, poverty, speculation on life saving drugs and so on after all...

Just FYI, Apple doesn't scour internet forums looking for tips to improve their products. Try communicating with them directly.
This may shock you, but i never said they did. This is an open forum talking about upcoming products. I posted what I’d like to see in said upcoming products.

I had the same thought when I read that lol. Protest with your wallet? Sure. Actually protest outside of stores with so much else going on in the world? Different....to say the least

Not reading this entire thread so don't know if it has been mentioned but a case will make the camera not so bad.

Wow.

If the final product resembles anything like the dummy models then the 2019 iPhones will be the ugliest iPhones (and smartphones) ever designed. The cameras really ruin the design. There's nothing coherent about them. They look like they've just been slapped on and so out of place.

Can't believe Apple out of all the tech companies in the world would push something like that out.

I suspect this year, sales will be driven primarily by people's ecosystem preference/constraint (either personal or work-related) as opposed to any compelling features, or great design.

Also shows how industrial design has taken a back seat at Apple in favor of maximizing profit and shareholder value. The good thing, however, is that everyone else (apart from Apple), has really upped their design game, and Apple will find it increasingly difficult to push premium priced, yet minimally differentiated hardware going forward.

Not really

People still want iPhones based on performance, updates, support and generally being smoother and having better quailty apps.

Pixel 4 look like they are copying this design as well so lets not act like this might not be the look going forward for other android devices.

It seems like we may get the first iPhone we can all agree is hideous.

I never case my phone, but I feel like you would have to just to try and make that bump somewhat flush.

Why are you here? This is an Apple-centric site and most of your posts are either critical of Apple or in praise of Google’s spyware platform and related copycat crap.

You’re not fooling anyone. Or perhaps you’re on Sammy’s payroll...

That's deep.

Words can't describe how ugly the rear camera is. It's looking more and more like this is the design Apple will introduce in September.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say these phones will not sell well. o_O

EDIT: I know some people mentioned that most will put their device in a case, so that may cancel out the fugly looking camera.

Let's park the design copying argument for a second (just because Google or anyone else copied it, doesn't make it a good design, and that's really the point). I fully agree with your reasons for why people may want an iPhone - exactly why I've always used an iPhone as my main driver (the ecosystem argument was meant to capture these points :)). In essence, it seems like the success of the new iPhone hinges on the new camera system. This is also why I'm very skeptical, because I am simply not impressed by the camera performance on the iPhone X and XS and XS Max (I own them all). It pales in comparison to the Pixel XL, 2 XL and 3 XL (which I also own), and many other Android devices on the market.

Just to bash Apple a little more, designs of recent Android phones from incumbents such as Samsung and relatively new entrants such as OnePlus, Oppo, etc., have shown much more variety and iterative/generational improvements, which sadly, the iPhone hasn't for a very long time (same basic shape/form as the iPhone 6 launched in 2014). To add, they exclude basic things such as fast chargers in a phone that costs $1000+, which isn't a great result for consumers. Unless the 2020 iPhone really delivers on all fronts, Apple is treading on very thin ice (there's only as long that a company can take even their most diehard loyalists for granted).

I think I'm going to have to go with the OnePlus 7 Pro this upgrade cycle. I hate android, however at this point I'm going to have to give it a try. I can always return it if I don't like it. This iPhone looks like hot garbage, and I haven't been impressed with my iPhone XS Max.

If you need a new iPhone get a cheap one till 2020, USB-C, 5G, Qualcomm modems and a design change with maybe no notch. Either way its a big update to this stale and in my view very ugly phone. I liked the pill shape on my Xs and other manufacturers added that third lens in either a central square, or a elongated pill shape, which looks better or they ran it horizontally. (google made the same mistake and it looks ugly on the new pixel 4 too.

This new iPhone just smacks of a lazyiness, milking the same overall design for as long as possible yet again. If I wasn't so invested in iMessage and FaceTime and iOS in general the Note 10 would be my go to device this year. It has such clean lines and a great pen too. The Note 10 reminds me of the days when iPhones were aesthetically beautiful like the 4/4s and 5/5s. Now its all about profit more so than ever but with no real wow factor and they cost way to much as it is for what you are getting with this three year roll over Apple have got into. Great business if people keep buying into it, but hardly pushing the design and innovation envelope that smartphones need.

I guess though smartphones have become boring in many ways because as they hit market saturation and innovation plateaued so each new phone is just a teeny tiny incremental update that nobody really is that excited by. I don't care about CPU specs as its a phone and it never gets pushed that hard, but please don't make them ugly as well as dull.

If people weren't bothered with the notch on the side of the phones that they stare at for hours, they're not going to be bothered with a square on the side of the phone that they don't stare at.

Hahaha great point.

Same exact thing was said about the iPhone X before every android oem used it as reference design and just cloned it.

You guys are living in the past. The new Samsung screens were a game changer. Exactly 0 Android flagships in 2019 feature an iPhone like notch. In reality, Apple will adopt Android design in a year with the 2020 iphones.
