Honestly, who uses a mouse anymore?

We've all gotten so used to trackpads by now, and they're much more expressive and accurate anyway.

Navigation with a mouse is so slow, feels like the stone age compared to a trackpad.

The only people I know using mice are people over 50.
Hi, mouse user here. In fact I'm using a mouse to click buttons and scroll as I write this message. No, I'm not over the age of 50. No I'm not interested in being forced into using a trackpad. For that matter I often use a mouse alongside laptops - MacBooks and otherwise - Rather than use the trackpad. Sometimes I'll go so far as to turn the trackpad off entirely to avoid it registering any unwanted movements/clicks.
You're welcome to your opinions.... But they are just that - Your personal opinions. Don't go off pretending to speak for anybody else.

Apple is reportedly working on a new Magic Mouse. Below, we recap what to expect.

The two key rumors for the Magic Mouse 3 so far include a relocated charging port, along with a more ergonomic design.

It was briefly rumored that the Magic Mouse 3 would also feature voice control, but that was misinterpreted information.

Relocated Charging Port

While the Magic Mouse switched from Lightning to USB-C last year, the charging port is still located on the bottom of the mouse, which prevents it from being used while charging. This is only a minor inconvenience, as charging the mouse is a quick and infrequent process, but it sounds like Apple will finally relocate the port.

In December, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said Apple was working on a redesigned Magic Mouse with a relocated charging port.

More Ergonomic Design

In addition to having a relocated charging port, the next Magic Mouse will be more ergonomic and comfortable to use, according to Gurman.

While no specific design details about the next Magic Mouse were shared, perhaps Apple will take some inspiration from popular alternatives for the Mac, like Logitech's excellent MX Master 3S. That mouse features an ergonomic design with a thumb rest, a front-facing USB-C charging port, precision tracking, two scroll wheels, and more.

The overall look of the Magic Mouse has not changed much since 2009, so a redesign has been a long time coming. Notable changes over the years include the mouse switching from AA batteries to a built-in rechargeable battery in 2015, new color-matching options with the iMac in 2021, and the switch from Lightning to USB-C last year. Overall, the Magic Mouse has not received much attention from Apple over the past decade.

Release Timing and Pricing

The new Magic Mouse will be released in 2026 at the earliest, according to Gurman.

The current Magic Mouse is priced at $79 in the U.S. on a standalone basis, and it is included at no additional cost with the purchase of an iMac or a Mac Pro.

There is no word yet on how much the Magic Mouse 3 will cost.

#1 MUST have feature if Apple wants to sell me a mouse: Standard, easily removable, easily replaced batteries. No soldered battery, no proprietary form factor. The battery form factor choices are the ones available on the shelf at any Walmart, Target, grocery store, etc. As much as I don't like the EU and disagree with a number of their edicts this is one area where I'd completely support their bending Apple over a barrel and forcing the issue.... Not only Apple, but every other mouse and trackpad vendor also. There's no valid excuse for soldered, proprietary batteries in a standard pointing device.

I know it’s not aesthetically pleasing but a functional mouse needs physical buttons and a wheel. Here’s hoping it’s just like the MX

"This is only a minor inconvenience". Are you running PR for Apple now? The charging port on the bottom of the mouse is a clear design flaw and has been a major criticism of it for years.

They need to change the input/dpi and the clicking sound to be more silent/muted..thats all

Weirdly it’s the most comfortable mouse out there for me. But you’re supposed to hold it loosely and push it around and not exactly grip it like you would a standard mouse. I charge it for 15 minutes on a random coffee break once a month to last 8-hour work days so I couldn’t care less about the port’s position. If anything I prefer it there aesthetically because charging it is something you do so rarely.

Honestly who the hell works on a laptop?

I can feel my back getting fd up just thinking about it.

Also Apple still makes desktop computers you know? It’s hard to imagine if you don’t use them I guess. And a trackpad is not good (or at least I’m not used to) for graphic design.

And I’m not even close to 50.
You forgot about the sheer number of digital nomads and of people who work in the field. Who the hell works on the desktop when travelling and such?

You know that Apple sells a standalone trackpad that you can use with a desktop computer? Trackpads do not only exist in laptops.

This is long overdue. Maybe the Magic Mouse 3 will have two charging points on the bottom instead of one. Then it can be charged twice as fast.

As a graphic designer I can’t even fathom using a trackpad and I’ve never seen anyone else use one with a desktop computer either…

I quite like my Magic Trackpad and hate the Magic Mouse. Having said that though, if I was using Photoshop or Illustrator all day I would want a decent mouse or Wacom tablet type thing.

All they need to do is move the port.

The ergonomics are PERFECT. I know "you're holding it wrong" is stupid Jobsian nonsense when you're talking about a phone, but it's absolutely true when you're talking about a mouse.

You should NOT be treating a mouse as a hand rest.

For just plain usage, sure, but for graphics or CAD apps a good mouse beats the trackpad by a mile.
I live in Excel in my day job and using it with a trackpad is a painful experience. Having physical left and right click buttons for manipulating cells and pasting in data in different formats feels much more accurate than using Force Touch gestures (or their sloppier Windows equivalents)

I’m guessing you don’t have a job that requires a computer, because a mouse makes a world of difference. Especially if you’re dealing with things like Excel spreadsheets.
LOL

Spreadsheets are fine with a trackpad. Not that I use them much, because my work is making computers work, other people can play with the spreadsheets.

I actually work mostly from a laptop these days, a lot of my time is in Apple Remote Desktop, touching other people's computers, or in Terminal. You could say my job requires not just a computer, but multiple computers. I typically only head up to the home office when I want big screens. And all five of the computers on the office desks have Magic Mice, even the Windoze junk I have to use sometimes has a Magic Mouse. But I can also remote control the office from my MacBook, and I usually do.

I use a $7 wired Amazon Basics mouse with all my Macs and have for years.
Because I prefer it over Apple's mice.
Sad.

I think there is zero chance they ship a non-ambidextrous mouse.
Why not? Apple is already committed to designing phones that can’t be used single-handed.

They don't even care if you can use one hand—why would they start caring about both?

They now only make phones that defy human thumbs. I think they can handle a mouse that defies lefties.
