Do not think that [MacOS on an iPad Pro] will run to well.
Well the 2020 Apple Silicon Developer Transition Kit (DTK) was an A12Z processor in a kludged Mac mini. It ran OS11 Big Sur reasonably well. It was not a speed demon but it was usable. The A12Z is a rebranded A12X, using the same T8027 CPU found in the 2018 iPad Pro, but including an improved 8-core graphics processor (7-core in A12X). I believe based on this, Apple could run MacOS on the current iPad Pro, if they want to.

The issue surely wouldn't be compute power since macOS runs quite fine even on some low level Intel chips.

Now if the iPad is so old/low end that it has <8GB RAM and only 64GB of storage you would run into issues.

Of course Apple bringing (full)macOS to any iPad anytime soon is nothing but a pipe dream.

If they did make one, I suspect it would have to be a high-spec version with a very high price tag.
What makes you think that high specs are particularly expensive? Using their own silicon saves Apple money compared to paying Intel.

A process shrink means even more chips will fit on each wafer or the chips can be faster at the same size and price. A 3nm M-series chip will be scary fast and able to push billions of pixels at the price of what an i7 used to cost. And a 5K panel was already a premium component, 6K isn’t that much of a difference.

It’s not 2020 anymore. We can expect that at the same price of the last Intel iMac a much more powerful AS iMac can be build by now.

I think that's really the core of the problem.

I would love a larger iMac, but with the prices they're charging for their displays, I don't think they could easily introduce a larger iMac at a price that would sit logically alongside the rest of their product range and still be priced in a way that would attract enough buyers.

If they did make one, I suspect it would have to be a high-spec version with a very high price tag. However, I suspect that's such a small market that it might not be a worthwhile option.

I hope I'm wrong though!

The joke of it is the 27" Studio Display is basically just a 27" iMac display(slightly updated panel but the tech is still very old). Apple was selling these 27" 5k iMacs at $1800 a few years ago which had a full computer in it.

27" Studio Display isn't that bad of a pill to swallow if you just need 1 monitor but it's just a stupid price for needing 2 or more of them(which I personally cannot see how most desktop users get away with being limited to one 27" monitor today but that's another conversation)

The issue is that in general (ARM SoC but also x86) the later is the typical choice. Add more capabilities and the resulting die size remains about the same or grows only slightly. Who knows, M3 might be the exception.

I can bet that they will announce a new iPad mini just because holidays is right around the corner and you know how ppl love giving iPads as gifts. Why would they miss out on that opportunity? Maybe it was just pushed back to be included in this event instead of the original launch plan of Oct 17 along with the new/meh pencil (as most likely it’s just a small spec bump and not a huge leap from the last iteration).

The problem for 6K IPS panels is....

If the DPI and all other tech is same as an existing 4k or 5k display economics of scale kick in at quite low numbers.

Just like they do for some of the more obscure aspect ratios already on the market.

As for Apple wanting to do that...

Yes I realise that, but I'm referring to the purchase price charged to customers, not the cost price to Apple. They're two different issues.

Apple isn't going to undercut Intel (or anyone else) on price, even if they can lower the manufacturing cost because they don't need to - they'll take the extra profit. They charge what the market can bear, and they will also set prices for any new products that are consistent with their existing product range. A larger iMac will be priced in a way that is consistent with their existing product range.

Nahh, Apple has NEVER done a night event before, it’s not just being festive, it’s primetime.

I think they’re gonna launch a game console, hence why they made the VR headset, they announced them in opposite order like how the iPad was conceived before the iPhone.
Not just at night, but it’s exceedingly rare to have one in New York. If this were just about dropping new Macs, they could have done that in Apple Park.

LG and neither was there competition for the 5K display
How much more do you think Apple's supplier for their current 6K display charges, compared to what LG charged for the 5K?

I think the issue is simply one of volume. While there are many voices here crying out for a 27" iMac, out there in the big, wide, world there evidently simply is not the demand for it.

Apple are neither dense nor poor. They sell items to make money and they are good at it. If there was a way to make money off of a bigger iMac, more than they make now with the ASD, they would have done it.

I for one do not want a bigger iMac. For many of us, 24" is about as large as we want to go. Those crying out for even larger iMacs, like 30", really are too few to force Apple's hands.

When the day comes that Apple can find a lower cost supplier for a 6K display maybe they will go ahead with a bigger iMac. I just don't see that day coming soon, because when I look around there are just not many people demanding 6K flat panel TVs (unlike 4K.)

It’s in New York?
Yes, even though it’s a pre-recorded stream, reporters and Apple influencers were invited to go to New York. It’s just like all the reporters being invited to Cupertino so they can directly play with what they introduce. Why go to NY when they could have easily done it in CA? Something else is up besides hardware.

That’s what I was hoping too, but unfortunately underwhelming same iMacs/Macbook Pros with new chips.

I was wrong with my tea leaf reading about a console. 😔

But I was right about the “Space Black” MacBook Pro which is exclusive to the high end MBPs, and I saw a vision of me using about two weeks ago 😊

Laptop batteries can easily last 4 to 5 years now. They have certainly improved power management and battery chemistry considerably in the past decade.
I benefited from the free 2015 MBP battery recall replacement. It was replaced five or six years ago and it's still acceptable.

I think MKBHD will have a celebration that he can finally get his matte black MacBook Pro.
