This should be a daily poll. I used to use Camino exclusively and it's still my favorite browser. But since the 10.3.8 update, Safari is very much improved (it no longer loads 99% of the page and then stops), so I've been using that recently. I reinstalled OS X when the update came out and haven't bothered to re-download Camino, but I will eventually. I look forward to the release of the new version, which has some better looking tabs and other cool features.

Does anyone know when to expect the more Mac-like Firefox?

Safari all the way. However, I'd like to try Camino and Firefox. I hope they're not bloated with a bunch of useless features that I'll never use. Can you do custom installs? Do they come with e-mail clients? I use mail so I just want a browser to surf the net and that's it.

I use OmniWeb on pretty much all my systems. I'm using 5.1 on this PowerBook, I use 4.5 on my iMac, I'm using 3.1 on my 7500 and 3.0 on my ThinkPad. Plus I just put together a NEXTSTEP set up on which I installed 1.0, 2.0 and 2.4.

You mean there are other browsers besides OmniWeb?

Here is what OmniWeb 1.0 looked like.

This is one of the primary goals for Firefox 1.1. It will probably be a couple/few months before it gets released. (edit: June 2005 seems to be the official target)

Here's an article about it.

"One of the main aims of 1.1 is to improve the user experience for users on Linux and Mac machines so that they can have a version of Firefox that fits in with their operating system as well as the Windows version fits in with the Windows OS," Hallowell said.

Firefox has next to no bloat in it. It pretty much just a web browser. You can started adding you own bloat in the form of extentions that you would like and want to use. Safari has more bloat than firefox

Camino has a few more extras out of the box but it does not have the ability to add extentions to it.

Browser blues....

I use Explorer or Safari.

I find that explorer lock up on me after a while. Doesn't crash, just won't move in any direction.

I get this with Safari too sometimes, although I find Safari much more reliable for downloading.

I think my tinternet needs setting up properly. I know my broadband isn't really that hot, but I'm sure it should be faster. I'm not really a computer person..... :D :D :D :D

I just downloaded Firefox, played with it, and uninstalled it. It just can't beat Safari, in my opinion.

ummm yeah that is a fair test. Play with it for a little bit dont really get in to it dont bother reallin installing extentions.

Yeah it really a fair test.
same as
I going to test out a new mac. I test it out for a day. I can play my favorit game on it or use autocad. Oh cannt beat windows XP in my opinan so their for it not good. Now that test I going to do is a great test and really a fair test.

If you don't like the UI of Firefox (and I can't blame you - the default appearance isn't Mac-like at all), I could understand you not bothering to install extensions or really exploring Firefox. It's not that I don't like Firefox per se - the Windows version is excellent - but that the Mac version just doesn't live up to the Windows version.

I never told you how long I played with it, so you are doing quite a bit of speculation there. I downloaded the safefox theme because I thought it looked the most mac-like. I hadn't encountered any need for these extensions you speak of. I spent enough time with it to see that it is not as seamless and trouble-free (in my experience) as Safari. It's just my opinion. Get over it.

Totally Firefox.

BTW, does anyone know where can I get the fox-on-apple icon and how to replace the original one with it? Thx.

First, go here to download one of the optimised builds. Open the dmg in the normal way, then Control-Click on the application icon and choose Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Click through the Contents and Resources folders, and you'll find a file named 'firefox.icns'. Copy or drag that file to your desktop.

Now go through the same process with the version of Firefox that you're currently using, and replace the firefox.icns file with the one on your desktop.

Enjoy! :)

I'm pretty sure you can also right-click and "Get Info" on the optimized build, select the icon so that it's highlighted, and hit Cmd-C to copy it to the clipboard. You can then repeat the process for the version of Firefox (or any file/program, really...) currently installed and paste it (Cmd-v) over the old icon.

Yep, that sounds far more economical. Thanks for the tip. :)

Oooh, you mean the copy of the icon shown under Preview? I tried this and I couldn't figure it out. I'm already familiar with how to do it via package contents (I've done that before), but I wanted to see.

I don't think you can highlight the icon or get a contextual menu for it, and I don't think you can copy or paste it. :(

No, mkrishnan - not the icon in Preview. The one in the General (top part) of the Get Info dialog is where you do this.

There are so many member names I like here - "mkrishnan" just happens to be one of them :)

Does anyone like Firefox's find-as-you-type search function? I love it, and I hope Apple implements it in future versions of Safari. However, I would like Safari's current search box instead of Firefox's search bar at the bottom of the window.

Oh, I got it now. Thanks, Mr. Wizard! :)

Hmmm...that makes me think. I don't usually use the search sidebar in IE, but I do really like the search drawer in Preview. I wonder if Apple could come up with some innovative way to display a table of all the hits on the page for a term, somewhat along the lines of Preview? And keeping the find-as-you-type nature. :)

Safari 100%. I don't have the time or the inclination to run multiple 3rd party browsers. Safari is fast enough for me.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't flaming. I don't doubt that people do have issues, I was simply commenting that it's rather uncharacteristically not happening to me!

Sorry, I wasn't trying to accuse you of flaming. It's just that there are some seriously fanatical Firefox fans out there who take any critique of their browser a little too personally. I fully understand, I am a Mac user after all... ;)
