wrldwzrd89: How do you activate the Tab Exposé pictured on the Shiira site?
I don't know. I've never tried using Exposé while Shiira is running...maybe merely activating Exposé does it (all windows mode or application windows mode only, obviously). I'm not at my Mac right now, so I can't test it.

Does anyone use OmniWeb 5.1? I find it quite utile...

Yes it costs money, but one gets:
  • Rendezvous shared bookmarks
  • thumbnail tabs (so pretty!)
  • easy per-page/site preferences
  • Auto-loads on launch pages open when it was closed (snapshots)
  • Set "Workspaces" for different tasks, with different pages autoloaded
  • A custom rendering engine based on WebCore, not WebKit. WebKit is used in many more applications than just browsing, and performance suffers as a result. The OmniWeb rendering engine is aimed solely at traditional browser applications and is therefore faster at that task.
  • Very "Cocoa" interface (and Aqua, not brushed metal)

No, it doesn't seem to work (F9 or F10), and I can't find an option in the Preference panel. Perhaps it's a forthcoming feature.

Also, unless I'm doing something wrong, if I want to open the url I've just entered in a new tab I need to press alt-click, but if I want to open one of the stored bookmarks in a new tab I need to press CMD-click. Having to remember two different modes is a bit annoying.

If you add Tabbrowser Extensions (which is ooooh deprecated) or maybe Tabbrowser Preferences, you can control this. You can also do things like force the results of the search bar into a new tab, etc.

BTW that tab expose does look really sweet. Does Shiira have any equivalent to adblock or pithhelmet? I didn't see ad blocking on the feature list.

EDIT: Just wanted to add...I did a google, and it sounds from some threads like tab expose is only available on nightly builds of shiira, and uses *f8*.

Yep, that seems to work -- many thanks.

Hi,

Ok I've gone through all the posts here. I d/l'ed FF a few days ago and find it to be terrific. Safari stalls on my bank sites and travel sites, etc. I get a lot of "safari can't find server" messages. Haven't received it once on FF or Camino. So what does FF "optimized"' mean. I d/l'ed FF from the Mozilla site flat out. Is there something else I should be downloading. And I heard there is an icon for FF where the Fox is wrapped around an Apple. I gotta get that one :D

I like Camino too. What is Cocoa??? I can't tell any difference between FF and Camino other than FF seems a bit more polished, I like the way my Bookmark bar blends "seamlessly" together(gee I hate that word, but it is so descriptive) whereas in Camino, I get these ugly folders. And I love the drop down Search engine menu in the upper right hand corner of my FF screen. Very nice. I've been trying one Browser/day, alternating them just to see what happens. I've had to go to other browsers when using Safari, but never with FF or Camino.
Tabbed browsing is really cool, once you get the idea. And there are other "skins" for FF???

Thanks.

Frank

Thanks for the Fox and Apple

Now, how do I get it to take the place of the Fox and Globe??
I'm clueless on this stuff.
Thanks.

You can normally add it by copying the icon into your buffer and then opening the info window for Firefox (get info, after clicking on the firefox icon in the folder its installed in), and then clicking the top copy of the icon in the window and clicking paste.

BUT...I have a question. I can see that this image has the transparency of the background properly defined, but when I save it to my desktop, it shows up in the preview with a black background, and if I paste it in as an icon, it also shows up as an icon with a black background. In Preview, it has a white background, like it should (since its transparent, and the preview background is normally white).

So why isn't it transparent as an icon, in the dock, etc? I've had this problem a few times now.... :(

Usually, this issue is caused by the image->icon conversion not generating the correct mask for the icon. This can be fixed in an icon editing program.

>>fixed in an icon editing program<,

I had the same problem. Drives me crazy. I had to change back as my eye kept catching it.
Any recommendations on an icon editing program. I didn't know they had them.

I recommend a combination of Pixen for drawing the icon and Icon Composer (comes with Xcode) for making an icon file out of it.

I have since switched back to Safari, though Shiira's still around should I decide to use it again. Two things in particular irk me about Shiira:
1. Lack of support for the system-wide spelling service
2. Inability to add bookmarks to Safari as well as to Shiira

For the way I want to use Shiira, these two issues need fixing before I'll use it as a Safari replacement. Keep in mind that Shiira is best used as a replacement for Safari, not an alternative to Safari, due to the way they're integrated.

Yikes. I'm finding myself really leaning toward FireFox. Everytime I bring up Safari, it's not the speed, but the fact that certain pages, and it seems to be more everyday that just hang there. Camino isn't to polished and I don't like all the folders I get on the bookmark bar. Firefox, moves, redraws, etc. Everytime I look up, I have Firefox open. I'll play more with all of them to see.
btw, what is Cocoa?? Read the Camino has Cocoa and FF doesn't???? What does it mean??

First use Pic2Icon on the picture. Then show info, and copy/paste the icon. :)

I used to be Safari-Only until I discovered the speed of browsers like Camino and Firefox which, while not as purdy and Apple looking, absolutely blow Safari out of the water in terms of speed.

Safari struggles so badly with sites that the other two pull up lightning fast. I do like Safari's simplicity and ease of use though, hmm...

I guess I still go to Safari first, but when I feel it's not fast enough for my needs I head toward Camino or Firefox.

All I can suggest regarding Cocoa is to look here.

I had been usin' Netscape for the longest time until I yesterday. I started usin' Safari cause you guys said it's superior. And today I started usin' Shiira cause of more preferences than Safari and the bookmark integration. I'm hearin' strengthes and weaknesses from the other browsers but I think I'll stick w/ this for a while. Shiira seems to fit my needs perfectly.

For any Safari user's, I reccomend Shiira.... it's like the same thing except you get more options!

I said Shiira was a great little browser, and I was almost positive somebody would try it and like it...I guess I was proven right by your post!

The person who worked for the Mozilla Project also happened to help in the construction of Safari. So anyone who says they are "blown" away by the speed of Firefox over Safari, I'm afraid to say is just blowing hot air.

Yea I forgot to thank ya for the reccomendation. I was missin' the "new tab" button that was in Netscape, and was bummed when I didn't see one in Safari but Shiira has it! Yea it's the little things that count.
