Much like their OS releases, it’s not unusual for features to be held back until the following year. Iteration is the mantra for their hardware releases. They could have many features in the pipeline that they held back for S8

How is (1) a new case (2) a new screen size (3) reduced bezels (4) brighter screen when wrist down (5) better dust resistance (6) stronger glass any less ambitious than a typical year for them? The difference between S6 and S5 seems smaller than that.

S6 had a completely new health sensor.

The new screen has smaller bezels than the old one. Well that already happens every single year with every screen of every size anyway. I doubt Tim Cook was spending sleepless nights phoning manufacturers to propose the revolutionary idea of making bezels smaller, while they were all fighting him every step of the way saying no bigger bezels are the way forward. Then suddenly after 11 months of entrenched battle Apple finally found a manufacturer willing to take a chance on the plucky billionaire’s crazy idea and reduce the bezels. And so now we will get the smaller bezels, yet the man with arguably the most supply chain experience of any human being in history still cannot tell us when that will be.

Something just doesn’t add up.

The health sensor is not “completely new” in S6, but whatever. If you don’t follow Occam’s razor, nobody can make you.

For me, Occam’s Razor says something went wrong.

How come the iPhone 13 somehow got more features than just the reduced notch, extra colors and new thickness? That’s surely the equivalent of what the Watch team delivered? Plus the iPhone actually has a release date, unlike the watch.

Everyone is up in arms about who was right and who was wrong, but let’s not lose sight of the fact that nearly EVERY media outlet is calling the Series 7 a dud of an update. Either Apple leaked wrong info and shot themselves in the foot by leaking a vastly cooler Watch than they could deliver, or the rumors were ahead of their time. In either case, Apple’s lack of innovation is the main feature in Fall 2021.

As much as I dislike Prosser’s smugness, it’s not a stretch to believe that Apple develops new Apple Watches with a backup stream alongside the intended version.

They didn’t just come up with a fallback plan, it was prepared a year in advance and when it became clear they couldn’t ship the redesigned Watch, they switched to Plan B.

A company the size of Apple isn’t going to rest their fate in the hands of third party component providers or their own shortfalls. They’ll *always* have a Plan B ready and can easily afford it, whether they use it or not.

Same exact interals as the year old Watch they already have a reliable production for is a likely indicator of that Plan B.

The iPhone is by far the national treasure at apple. This surprises you?

Ummmmmmmm AirPower

I choose to believe that Apple scrapped the design last minute. I can't remember the last time they announced something and didn't announce a release date.

It's not unreasonable to think that they had this backup plan in case something went wrong which is why they started manufacturing this late. Yes industrial design takes a long time but it's also not uncommon to have multiple designs in the works in case that things don't work out. Using the existing chassis for a larger screen is a simple and effective backup plan and I think that's exactly what happened.

Yep in the end that’s the message that got out and one that’s all on apple. It doesn’t even take much to make the masses happy. Let’s not forget the blood oxygen gimmick. Couldn’t even add another gimmick much less a feature.

This was my favorite product from the event. The new green color looks great. I currently have a series 6 and didn't want to feel the need to upgrade. I payed full price for the Graphite Stainless Series 6. I am also glad that they improved the strength of the glass since that's been the biggest weakness and I have scratched the heck out of the Sport Model every time I have tried one and it sucks to have to pay the premium for Stainless just to get the sapphire crystal display. I wonder if the rumors about the squared off design came from Apple to find the leaks in their supply chain.

I don’t care about the square design, but I do wonder why there were no upgrades to the chip.
How do we know there weren't power efficiency upgrades? I'm guessing there were, and that they were critical to maintaining the same battery life while driving a much larger display and brighter always-on functionality.
The case is exactly the same and is compatible with all the same bands. What are you talking about?
The case is rounder and a mm wider. The interface between the display/crystal and case is different.
not worth upgrading from a S6 with no new added sensors. The S8 will be the one to jump to with an obvious health upgrade. S7 is such a money grab right now.
Most people don't upgrade their watch annually. I sure don't. Apple wouldn't be targeting Series 6 owners with this release. I'm coming from a Series 4 and this is a compelling upgrade. I think I represent the average case here.

Completely agree. This is a fairly significant upgrade.

The media reporting reflects the opinions of its audience, and the hype right now is that Apple isn't innovating enough. That's been a pretty common reaction honestly for most Apple product releases. It's like a broken record. Yet Apple almost always ends up reporting record sales a quarter later. Go figure.

There have been many years the watch team delivered a similar set of upgrades. What are you talking about? This year is no different than any other year, just because you only accept “flat vs round“ or “new health features” as legitimate upgrades.

I love how something must have gone wrong as 99% of the leaks failed

So you believe Tim Cook let the watch department, which is the only one he personally created, deliver the most disappointing and vague update since AirPower?

The chip has an identical model identifier to the old chip. Same chip. Other things changed, but not the CPU.

It’s very likely that Apple scrapped the new design at last minute due to production issue.

the watch announcement felt very short and abrupt, meaning Apple was ready to talk detail about the new casing and design in the video. But the production issue might have scrapped the design at very last minute, something Apple did not foresee.

the larger screen was designed to put it on SE model at future date which will still have that iconic first gen casing design. So Apple was able to salvage the Series 7.

the redesigned casing is still being tweaked for Series 8 from what I hear.

The squared edges were stupid anyway, they'd be incredibly uncomfortable and your watch would snag on more stuff.

No, the thing that's missing is the blood glucose sensor. They'd have sold an iWatch to every diabetic in America this year.

No new processor, no new sensor, and no ship date means the new design failed, and this is the fallback product.

The most likely scenario is that Apple considered the flat-edged design among other options, probably even as a strong candidate, but at the end they settled with the one presented this week. What we saw is the result of motivated design decisions and not improvisation. For example, the changes made to the crystal are not minor and the wrapping effect it creates is highlighted as an important feature of the overall redesign. That curved crystal requires a case with rounded edges for "a seamless integration" as Apple indicates in their marketing
