I jokingly said that Prosser and other leakers would say Apple changed plans if their leaks end up wrong. And it actually happened and people are falling for that. It’ll be the same thing when the iPhone 14 isn’t a punch hole design. Apple doesn’t make huge changes on a whim. The leaks were wrong.

I mean, we are talking about the exact same video shot as this Watch, which is definitely rounded.

I would love your hypothesis to be true, but I don’t see the proof here (and don’t believe that Apple would be dumb enough to forget an unreleased design in an official ad)

Yeah you’re probably right. Probably just an optical illusion in that case.

Maybe the flat design is coming next year but I much prefer a round design for a watch.

I only purchase stainless steel apple watches and the way the light reflects off it looks great.

Believe what you want, but that's not how manufacturing works. Apple would have finalized the Series 7 design many months ago, if not last year.

I don’t see Apple coming up with a AW series 7 design within last minute. What was the whole Apple team doing for a whole entire year? Also, production sets in months in advance. Series 7 is receiving smaller upgrade.

Bottom line: It’s just an S year for Apple Watch.

It's not unreasonable to think that they had this backup plan in case something went wrong which is why they started manufacturing this late. Yes industrial design takes a long time but it's also not uncommon to have multiple designs in the works in case that things don't work out. Using the existing chassis for a larger screen is a simple and effective backup plan and I think that's exactly what happened.

I still think that Apple I behind sending the "leakers" on the wrong path ... or, maybe they wanted to get public feedback on that flat-edge design?

Or maybe, just maybe... Prosser just wanted to drive traffic to his YouTube channel? Just a thought here. I mean, look at his thumbnail. Is that someone you would trust with a leak being real? All these analysts suck ass, and youtubers even more.

Pretty sure we do know that is not the case.

1) what production issues would cause a slightly differently shaped case to not work, but would allow the other changes that apple did make to work?
2) the changes to the crystal and the way it connects to the case are not small. There’s no way that apple made all of those changes in the last couple of months
3) if there were production issues that did cause a crisis, the result would not have been that apple reengineered the case and the crystal - they would have went with the same design as last year.

Perhaps the need for a flat screen and glass with small bezels without compromising durability.

Yes they couldn’t make the change in the last couple of months alone. Which is why the watch has no official specifications or release date at its own unveiling event.

They did go with the same design as last year, except for the screen. They literally could not have made a smaller change without being sued for misuse of language if they gave it a different name.

The screen was never rumored to be “flat”

The design is not the same as last year - both the case and the crystal were reengineered. The crystal is a completely different shape and thickness, and the case is a different size, and has a different method of connecting to the crystal.

The screen was actually the least of the changes.

Love that Prosser was proven wrong. I can't stand him, his smugness, or his videos. I can't even stand his video thumbnails.

If this means Apple is cracking down on at least some leaks a little better, I'm all for it. I, for one, like some surprises.
so, what's your plan?

The flat edges looked terrible anyway, I'm glad those rumors were false.

Conclusion

Of course, we'll never know for certain what happened and whether Apple had last-minute design changes, or whether all of the previous rumors and reports were simply meant for the Series 8, rather than the Series 7.
Imma gonna read between the lines here. Apple has located the biggest leak source to date. Whomever was feeding info to...
Given that Kuo, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, and leaker Jon Prosser, the most reputable sources for Apple's unreleased product plans, have all reported a flat-edged Apple Watch
is getting the pink slip soon.

[...]

... the new watch will receive a "significant redesign" in 2021 "at the earliest."

I'm going to become a new leaker right now: Assuming the new redesigned macbook pro will come out next October I predict the next "significant redesign" after the one is coming next month will come, at the earliest, in November.

This is the same as the current iMac redesign: People got bent out of shape when the design didn't match the existing renders and expectations.

As far as I'm concerned, nothing "went wrong" with the Apple Watch reveal: This year's Apple Watch is objectively better than last year's.

In my opinion, recent examples of something actually going wrong with a product reveal are the Tube Mac Pro and the 2016 MacBook Pros with the TouchBar, no function/ESC keys, and USB-C only.

The Watch only gained features this year, and lost NOTHING.

I 100% feel this was a last minute decision, for a few reasons:

1. The jump cut to the watch section of the keynote from the iPad suggests that section was reshot.

2. The sketchy ‘available later this fall’ suggests Apple don’t even know when this watch is going to be ready, it probably hasn’t entered mass production yet.

3. It uses all the same internals pretty much from the Series 6, so only a small amount of testing will be required.

4. The display being further away from the OLED panel is a bit sus… wouldn’t Apple do they’re usual thing of getting the display as close to the panel as possible.

5. All leakers were singing from the same hymn sheet leading up the event.

6. The reports of issues with production due to the complete new design just don’t tally up… so what issues could Apple have had getting last years internals to work in what is basically the exact same externals as last years watch… seems really dodgy.

Overall, I feel the squared off design was either scrapped completely last minute or shelved until the S8, as the production issues with the complete redesign would have delayed it far too much… so Apple just took the displays (which were already produced) slammed them on the current chassis which was marginally altered to fit the new display and launched it, the reason being is the displays were ready and the 41mm and 45mm bands had already been massed produced which would have just been a complete waste of production and resources.
