IMO, Apple maps is better than google maps, apples iCloud is better than googles equivalent. iOS apps are more refined than google apps. And subjectively iPhones are the winner in phone race in my family. So here we go.

Google Maps is still better than Apple maps and Google Drive and Google Photos is what iCloud aspires to be with their new “files” icon.

I must be the exception then because my launch day S8 is still as smooth and quick as it was the day I got it :)

To be honest, for me the iPhone 8 came too late: I'm loving my S8 and have no intention of swapping it for the next iPhone. Maybe in a few years I'll come back to iOS for my phones (I've got a 10.5 iPad Pro and I'm looking forward to what iOS 11 will bring), but for now I'm more than happy with a foot in the Android camp!

My S8+ is still performing wonderfully. Right now I’m using my 7+ as a daily driver for testing out iOS 11’s features and at no point do I ever think the 7+ feels appreciably faster.

Now here is the question... what will the iPhone 8 have over the Samsung Galaxy 8 Plus? Someone help me get excited about the iPhone 8 so I can stop dreaming about how this Samsung phone looks almost perfect (not liking the fingerprint sensor on the back). Help me with kindling I need to be excited for the new iPhone!

Perhaps we should wait until Tuesday to ask this question.

Correction, the note is faster than iPhone 7 plus. See YouTube. Better apps? Google maps, google now and everything google beats Apple these days. If Apple was only using a bit more of its profits for future investments and not so greedy on margins we should have a much nicer phone.

It depends on the apps. For instance, I'm a die-hard user of Air Video HD. I haven't found an Android equivalent yet that's as full-featured and stable.

Saying that Apple is too late, especially coming from someone working on Macrumors, is just not a valid arguement for me. We all know the release schedule of Apple devices. I mean we are free to buy whatever we want, but saying that Apple is too late just doesn't make sense to me.
It's not like there have been bezel free phones for years. We are talking about months here. So, yeah sure, Apple was later than Samsung but it's still within that 6 months frame.

I like people like this honest and doesn't bash other makes of phones. The s8 is a fantastic phone it does some things better than iPhone and some things not so much. I am ditching apple this year and have pre ordered the note 8 I think that extra memory will make it preform better than s8

Firstly, I don't work for MacRumors, I volunteer ;)

Secondly, being a mod on MR doesn't mean I have to use Apple gear exclusively - I have an iMac 27", 12" TB MBP and iPad Pro 10.5 (and also an SE as a backup phone) but also have a Surface Pro 4, Galaxy Tab S2 and the S8: I like technology and enjoy stuff from many manufacturers

Thirdly, by "too late" I meant that the S8 is so good that I'm not interested in changing it so Apple missed the boat on this round of releases for me

I didn't mean that you should only own Apple stuff, but what I meant was, that you clearly know the release cycle of iPhones. So I am surprised that you would say that they are too late, if they clearly stick to their schedule ;P that was all I was saying.

iOS.

It's the very reason I sold my Samsung S8 after 3 months of ownership Android is horrendous.

Maybe I didn't explain myself properly then :)
When I got the S8 I fully expected it to be a stop gap until the next iPhone came out. However, I like it so much that I'm not interested in getting rid of it so in that respect the fact that Apple release their next phone after the S8 means they were too late to stop me moving to Android (at least for now)

So, the fact that Apple let their designs stagnate meant I looked elsewhere for something new earlier in the year with the result they have lost me (for now) as an iPhone customer so in that respect they were too late with their updated design. I have no doubt I'll move back to the iPhone at some point in the future, but it won't be this release and might not be the next one (depending on what Samsung do with the S9)

Does that make more sense?

I'm looking to change to the S8 and *after 10 years* to Windows for the same reasons too. Windows changes radically so that I can say that (for now) I like it very much!

How did you find the S8 regards the lags, performance or smoothness?

For many, Apple is too late. The S8/S8+ is very compelling when compared to what Apple has been doing for 3 years in a row.

Consumer dollars and patience are finite. While I typically run two devices, most people don’t. If someone got an S8 last month they probably are not in the market for a new phone next month.

Ok, that sounds reasonable.

But yeah, I guess Samsung sold everyone on the idea that the S8 was a redesign. Even though the form factor is practically the same and they only reduced the top and bottem bezel. Compare that to the radical redesign Apple will have with the OLED iPhone and then you know why it took them so long.

Yes. Apple is doomed. Good bye.
I guess if everyone here would be running the company then everything would be going sooo much better.

But just for fun let's go through this;

let's review the design changes of the S8 to the S7 edge; The dimensions are practically the same. The S8 is 2 mm shorter than the S7. Everything else is the same. They reduced the bottom and top bezel. That is the only change they made.

now, let's compare that to the design changes of the iPhone 7 to the OLED-iPhone; Completely redesigned exterior, reduced bezels on all sides (not sure about right and left), new interiors, new form factor.

So, yes. Apple could have half-assed their approach last year and reduced a bit of the top and the bottom like Samsung did, or they could wait a year and do something big.

Android has improved UI smoothness over the years, but it is not as "smooth" as iOS and you will see occasional micro-stutters when scrolling, etc: If that bothers you then you wouldn't be happy.

Having said that, one of the reasons iOS is so smooth is that it makes compromises to ensure that smoothness: For example, the inertial scrolling on Android allows you to scroll up and down pages much faster than iOS (which is one of the reasons it isn't as smooth) and I personally prefer the faster scrolling and don't mind an occasional stutter

I can't say I've noticed any lag though and performance is absolutely brilliant. For me, though it's the little things that make the difference and more than compensate for the occasional micro-stutter.

For example:
I can turn off my hue lights by tapping on an NFC tag attached to my bed stand
I can play music directly from Google Play Music to my Sonos speakers (no need to use the Sonos app)
I can dabble in VR with the Gear headset
I love the always on display
It seems more reliable with background operations (such as photo uploads, etc)
I can layout my home screen as I want it to look
The back button makes navigation much easier (as does the dedicated multi-tasking button)

I just need weather widgets on my home screen in a variety of colors and the ability to change my app launcher daily. It is critical to the phone experience.

Bought a Galaxy S8 plus yesterday with with days to return. Let's just say the new iPhone better be really, really good.

I am sure both phones are great, it really just comes down to OS preference in my eyes. For me, iOS brings too many advantages. Hardware is hardware and will become less and less important over time. Soon enough, we'll just have thin screens.

5 years ago Apple had the edge in almost every category. IMO Apple rested on their laurels and milked their loyal customers. There isn't that much differentiation in build quality of phones that can justify Apple's price. Will they sell well Apple earn exaggerate lots of money? IMO I think so (except in India and China) but if you take an objective look in what you get you'll notice it's way too expensive. 5 years ago they were ahead of the pack and in 2007 they deserved the title as world changing company. Since then nothing much has happened on the Apple front except higher prices and minimal upgrades. In the meantime the competition worked very hard and (it's my opinion) even surpassed the iPhone in specs and features. Oreo is at least on par with iOS. Together with the better and cheaper services on the Android side I find it hard to give Apple any credits lately. Even the design of the iPhone 8 already looks dated to me. If the iPhone 7s/7s Plus only get an processor update it would be stupid for newcomers to buy any of them. The just released AndroidOne phone offers a better (more modern) design and comes with Amoled and dual camera's and will cost you like $ 400. Good luck Apple defending your snobistic prices. Apple is turning into an yuppie brand where status is more important than substance. Not the Apple brand I was proud of. Not the world changing innovative company from 5 years ago.
I think Apple will keep milking their iPhones as long as possible and if their is no more milk they'll chose another category to milk and stall innovation even further. That's what they do with the Mac and everything else they touch. Money first!

I think a lot of people feel the iPhone 8 is too late because it's specification was expected last year. The iPhone 7 was effectively a third edition iPhone 6 and left many people disappointed, including myself. The numbering might be consistent but the development cycle feels delayed by 12 months.

Hardware and design Apple definitely lost this year. And software... I think Apple can't keep up with the rapid innovations on the Android side.

Yeah sure. You don't even know what Apple will release but sure. Apple is doomed. Let's move on.
And about Android Oreo; If Apple would release such a small major update they would be torn to pieces. But if Google does it everyone is getting a freaking hardon.
How is the AndroidOne phone more modern than the iPhone 7? It's the exact copy of the iPhone 7 except for a fingerprint reader on the back. And no, the LCD phones will not just get a processor update. It will get a new cassis.
Furthermore, which company is innovativ anymore? We have come to a still stand when it comes to technology. And sorry, the Face ID feature will be game changing and innovativ. And how can an unreleased design already look dated to you? We have NEVER seen the phone in full shine. Only some knockoff dummies that are poorly produced.

They lost? They will sell more iPhone 7's than all of the Galaxy phones in 2017. The iPhone 8 will sell more in it's first month. The 2017 iPhone hasn't even come out yet so we'll need to compare the two from a design perspective once the phone comes out. From what I have seen, the iPhone is the better looking phone. What innovations on the Android side?

Have you seen the software features this year of iOS 11? Sorry, but the Software is still better on the iPhone. Sure, you can get some better AI but at what price? I am not interested giving all my private information to google.
And what do you say to the high prices of the Note 8? Oh of course, there the prices are truly justified.

Well, that might be true, but I never expected that so I am surprised other did. All I have to say is, that I want Apple to take all the time they need. I'd rather have a great phone a year later then some butchered version of it a year earlier.

Wow, a phone released two weeks ago is faster than a phone release 11 months ago, although I'd still argue that the iPhone is faster.
Again. I will not give all my data to google. That is just how it is.
