At the first glance, yes. But after some hours you appreciate its compactness
It is actually very awesome and well thought out.

Messages staying in sync across devices was my favorite part of WWDC. No surprise that it's delayed. To be honest, I thought this was a feature we'd see a year after the ability to push messages to other devices rolled out. I'm sure there's privacy and other issues to address, but it will suck if it's not in the first iOS 11 release.
I thought they synced anyway? They seem to be on all my devices? Sometimes it misses out on one, but 90% of my iMessages are on my phone, iPad, and Mac? Maybe I’m missing something?

It's not synced currently. It only delivers them now to your individual devices. Removing from one device doesn't remove from other device. Sync would make them all have the same messages and removing in one device would impact the others.

Makes sense to disable iMessage in iCloud right now. My iCloud Drive has 2GB of messages stored in it - but the system is telling me that all of my conversations combined should add up to about 200MB at most. So something has gone wrong somewhere.

Some android phones, particularly the Galaxy line do this. It’s rather annoying. I get that it is a battery hog but cmon, if I need my flashlight I need my flashlight lol

Not just a battery hog; depending on the battery health it may pull enough power to cause the phone to die (abruptly, without shutting down)

I upgraded my wife's iPhone 6S to public beta 3 two weeks ago just for the cloud messages. She's got a 16GB phone and is short on storage so this feature was a godsend.

Do you think she can stay in that beta until it's back in a future version of ios? Or will apple stop syncing her messages?

Why you'd want to update a daily used phone of a non-tech person to an iOS beta is beyond me. Anything could go wrong and features like this one can get removed.

I would definitely make a backup of those messages because there's a realistic chance Apple will reset their servers at one point. And then they could disappear from the device.

Also, I would not recommend running this beta until iOS 11.2 or whenever the feature returns. First, it will expire. Second, it might contain security leaks. Third, it's most likely brutal on battery life. Fourth, there may be upgrade issues to upgrade directly from this beta to iOS 11.2 (assuming iOS 11.0 is no langer available by then) and five, app updates that are released this fall may be incompatible with this beta.

So what happens to those of us that used the public beta and enabled the iCloud Message thing? Could Apple be stupid enough to clear all those messages from the iPhone?

Yes. Remember how they reset Photos in the Cloud multiple times when it was in beta? So most likely they will.

Awesome, they finally removed the two lines from the camera icon. iOS 11 is shaping up nicely.

You’d think it would just be easier to make a dark mode than for them to mess with the smart invert.

Well that's the thing, it wouldn't. It's far easier to make it autonomous than change every app by app individually.

But it isn't the primary reason why they're doing it. I can see smart invert as main feature on the new OLED iPhone. That would ensure all Apps, even third party ones render as they want them to.

Man, I am shaking. New features !
Cloud messages delayed. Ohhh - was waiting for this.
Two partly new icons. And possibly, a new emoji (so happy it didn't get through immediately, that would have been too much)
And Jony Ive ? Is he putting his hand on the new iPhone 6 Mark VI (aka iPhone 8) or still playing nice with door handles, trees and his own coiffure ?

That’s a staggering amount of messages data. Perhaps the 200 MB doesn’t include pictures, GIFs, movies and attachments?

I routinely delete messages and emails. Hate them accumulating.

Betas are not meant for your primary phone with important data on it. It's a beta. Don't run it without accepting the consequences.

If I had a nickel for every android forum post I came across with a person begging for help that installed a leaked beta, phone is now boot looping, and they had messages that they just can't live without. No backup of course. I think it's hilarious.

Anyone on the previous beta to this had the problem with crackly/static in phone calls? Does this beta fix it?

I guess I'll find out tomorrow when the public beta drops for me, but it is a tad annoying to lose audio for about 5 seconds every 5 minutes in a phone call. Looking forward to seeing the back of that bug, considering I own a phone and all! :p

If the concept is beyond your understanding, then we have no need to explain to you why someone might like to do it.

Wow, so if you find something that is beyond your understanding you just let it be? You're not going to look into it to actually learn to understand it? Uhm, boy am I glad schools and whatnot do not give this answer to people who do not understand a concept that's beyond their understanding.

Maybe explain it to him so you can actually have a conversation about it, teach each other a thing or two...

Your actual messages are available across all devices, but your conversations are not synced. So, if you delete a conversation from one device it will remain on all other devices. iCloud for iMessage fixes that by making sure the Messages app displays the same conversations across all devices.

Easy, calm down. Might want to review the what's new in iOS 11. New emojis are always a given. Jony Ive is busy, he deleted the front Touch ID part number on the iPhone 1 mark X.

There is also a new sound effect when making a FaceTime call.
Have they finally removed this overly loud FaceTime ring tone ? It is absolutely ridiculous how annoying that tone is. When this is played over a car Bluetooth, it is almost as someone hammering against your head.

- Messages in iCloud - Apple's iCloud Messages feature, which allows iMessages to be stored in iCloud to free up space on an iOS or Mac device, has been removed in iOS 11 beta 5. Apple says the feature will be re-released in a future update to iOS 11, suggesting there are no plans to add it back to the version of iOS 11 that will launch in September alongside new iOS devices. It's not clear why the iCloud Messages feature has been removed or exactly when it'll come back.

Not surprising really! It takes Apple years to get anything iCloud working well. I just can't grok how bad they are at shared services.

"Ohh, so jealous 'bout 2 billion people spending their time in WhatsApp. We want a piece of that cake at all cost. No matter how much worse we are, we'll market the **** out of ourselves, just like in Maps. And in Music. Because.
It isn't anything good, but it is that we grab attention. Blurrep, arrgha Kar-car-caraoke, cool cool."

The biggest change has to be, finally, the removal/replacement of that COMPLETELY OBNOXIOUS ring-tone sound that FaceTime dialers had to listen to before the recipient of the call answers. How that remained in use for so many years is beyond me.
