It's going to be interesting to see how Apple manages the M-series upgrades. Most software doesn't come close to exploiting what's on offer in terms of CPU/GPU power and, for those that need more, the M1Ultra exists (and whatever they eventually do with the Mac Pro).

My M1Pro is already one of the best computers I have ever owned. Only technolust will spur an upgrade, otherwise I'm holding on this bad boy for the long-term.
Yeah exactly, the big jump was going from Intel -> Apple Silicon. Unless there's some really compelling new feature, I don't imagine myself upgrading until my 14" M1 Pro MBP stops getting macOS updates (hopefully at least 6+ years).

I'm still undecided about whether to get a laptop or stick with my iPad Pro and get a Magic Keyboard to go along with it. I mean, there are some things I won't be able to do on the iPad Pro that I could do on the laptop, but I'm short of money at the moment.
I think you just answered your question. 😃 What are you using your machine for? I bought the basic iPad and still have trouble seeing how it fits in sometimes.

I have both, and I strongly recommend you go with the laptop unless you really hate using macOS vs iPadOS. With the iPad I spend way too much time thinking "how can I do X?" when X is a straightforward task to do on a Mac like converting an image, renaming files, running a quick terminal command, etc. Also, if you spend the time you can really customize macOS to behave exactly the way you want with tons of keyboard shortcuts.

Currently, I'm using the iPad Pro for note-taking on my University course. But I also have to do quite a bit of research, which means loading up many Safari tabs.

That was my thinking as well. It just seems like there are so many more ways to get things done using a laptop. Plus, I can have a decent keyboard so I can type up more extensive notes without having to move to use my desktop machine.

TSMC say they'll be shipping N3 chips to their customers in early 2023, so a 2023 release should mean 3 nm.

Whether Apple uses the current A15-based architecture seen on the current M2's, or upgrades to A16, which is what will be used on the late 2022 iPhones, remains to be seen. Hopefully it's the latter. If they do that, it should be called the M3, but that's just a marketing name and Apple will do what they want.

My suggestion is would be go with what makes your efficiency higher and your life easier. It sounds like a MacBook Air may be the right balance for you. My son has the M1 for college. That thing is freaking amazing. The M2 won't be necessary for what you want and you can save some money...PLUS you get the education discount. If you have lots of tabs open, you might want to have the ability to use an external monitor when you're researching at your dorm/apartment. It really helps efficiency and you don't need the highest quality monitor for that kind of work.

Do you use Notability? I just mentioned it to someone the other day. Since I saw the syncing between notes and the lecture recording years ago, I've just thought about how amazing it would have been to have that in college for all those times I wrote notes trying to keep up and just wished I had an easy way to go back to that spot in the lecture.

I really hope they do. I need to upgrade, and would rather get an updated machine.

I hope so, I'm still rocking my Mid 2012 cMBP, and I'm ready for an upgrade but don't want to buy a new one this far into the cycle. My old beast is still running, so I can wait a bit but I really don't want to have to wait until next year.

I think you are right about the Air. I could get the M1 for £800. I have a few note taking apps. I’ve actually found the basic notes app included in iOS and macOS is massively undervalued but I’ll probably move over to notability or good reads.

The iPad Pro for multi task users is terrible, for any serious work I use the iPad as a Sidecar display..

Never thought I would be so disappointed in a product like the iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard

I would like:
  • Since M2 can have up to 24 GB RAM, M2 Pro with a choice of 24GB and 48GB RAM, and M2 Max with 96GB RAM

The M2 went from 16 to 24 because it got LPDDR5. The M1 Pro already has LPDDR5, so we won't get a similar upgrade — unless they add more 'sockets', anyway.

  • New Black finish (Graphite?) replaces Space Gray
  • Spec bumped to HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2

Yeah, that sounds about right.

    • CFexpress replaces SD

That seems quite unlikely. Maybe we'll see SD Express.

    • Ultra Wideband

Probably.

(But, the other shoe on Apple's UWB stuff has yet to drop.)

I think you'd have to be in a particular mindset. Some people really love it.

For me, the 14-inch MBP is overall a much better product.

Quiz - how many times can you count 'At this point in time'?

Bonus points if you can count them all.

I'll close the door behind me!
New drinking game :)

I’m thinking that OLED will get here when they refresh the design of the mbp. It’s not just to put a oled display there.

So 2024 sounds reasonable.

Yeah, it's a strange one. M2 has 8/16/24GB options, so does that mean:

M2 = 8/16/24
M2P = 16/32/48
M2M = 32/64/96

If they keep using the same 3 sizes of RAM chips used in the M2 (up from 2 sizes in anything M1) and keep the number of chips/channel the same for Pro/Max variants, those are the numbers we would (could) get.

You could also just double them another time come an M2Ultra Studio down the road.

Some people forget this is a rumor site and expect a prediction to become reality. Sometimes it’s just an educated guess or information in the moment! Geez, just wait for the products to launch if you’re going to hold every publication to that ridiculous standard!

I can’t believe how screaming fast these machines are. Moore’s Law is making a comeback… but don’t quote me… just a rumor!
lol moore's law is certainly not making a comeback, it might felt that way with the change from x86 to arm but chip density wise apple is quite off, the only sector that moore's law still kinda applies to is the gpu sector like amd or nvidia.

As long as the MacBooks have notches they're not interesting to me anymore. Unfortunately it's probably gonna take Apple quite a few years to finally get rid of them.
Quite happy I bought a M1 MacBook Air in January.

After only getting my 14l” Macbook Pro last week I love it, I’m glad I got it actually because I’m the type of person to hold off until something new is released to the point I never actually get anything lol

Could Face ID be added to the current M1 MacBook Pro’s lineup as a software update?

Apple is developing new versions of the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, but a refresh is still a ways off, so we don't have a lot of information on what to expect.

We do know the machines will get M2 Pro and M2 Max chips that will bring notable performance improvements. This guide highlights everything that we know about the upcoming 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, and it will be updated over time as we hear new information.

Design

We aren't expecting design changes for the updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. Apple just updated the look with the 2021 launch of the M1 Pro and M1 Max machines, and the company typically uses the same design for several years.

Apple is still using an aluminum unibody design, but the shape was tweaked to be flatter and less curved at the bottom. The machines include an all-black keyboard, a large Force Touch Trackpad, and two speaker grilles at the side of the keyboard.

The current MacBook Pro models feature mini-LED displays with ProMotion technology, slim 3.5mm bezels at the top and bottom of the display, and a notch that houses the 1080p webcam.

M2 Pro and M2 Max Chips

Though we're not counting on design changes, there will be internal updates with Apple rumored to be planning to use M2 Pro and M2 Max chips in the upgraded MacBook Pro models. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the M2 Max chip will offer up to a 12-core CPU, up from the 10-core CPU in the M1 Max, along with up to a 38-core GPU, up from the current 32-core maximum.

The M2 Max will support up to 64GB Unified Memory. Gurman did not share details on the M2 Pro, but it is expected to be less powerful than the M2 Max.

Possible Features

Apple is working on OLED displays for future devices, including MacBook Pro models. Some rumors have suggested that Apple could introduce OLED displays as soon as 2022, but more recent information has indicated OLED technology won't be coming until 2024, so it seems like a long shot for the 2023 refresh.

There have also been rumors suggesting Apple is working on Face ID for the Mac, and the higher-end MacBook Pro models would be prime candidates for the technology, but so far, there are no specific rumors indicating Face ID is coming to the Mac with the MacBook Pro refresh.

Launch Date

Apple introduced the M1 Pro and M1 Max 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models in October 2021, and while Macs sometimes get yearly refreshes, that's not expected to be the case this year. Gurman has indicated that Apple is not planning to refresh the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models until 2023, so we may not see new models this year.

Apple did update the 13-inch MacBook Pro with an M2 chip, the machine's first update since the M1 MacBook Pro launched in 2020.

That’s a shame, as mentioned earlier the notch design will look exceedingly dated once iPhones drop it. I wonder if the notch will affect resale values for these MacBooks?
