I like how you blithely swept-away the Physics FInal like it was just a passport photo ;)

So--looking out into the wide, wide World, what will you be doing, now?
After getting that AA degree, 📜 transfer to that 4 year university this fall.

I’m doing a NASA internship over the summer.

Graduation’s tonight, I got the ink modern buckle, cap and gown and the 7-8+ of honour cords and stuff ready. I’m so excited y’all. Also have family coming over as guests and a few of my friends!

Congrats! Another of many, many satisfying periods in your Timeline.

btw, why is your family coming over as guests?!? Have y'all been estranged?

Dude, family definitely has to support you at graduation, so they come watch you cross the stage. It’s a norm, bro! 👊!

Just finished, man. It was fun! 🤩

It's really nice to occupy a Space of Achievement in meeting the goals we have set for ourselves.

Enjoy these moments :)
And another graduation I’m going as a guest is my younger brother’s he’s middle school bound 😊 T-minus a few days

Will strap an Ink Leather Link on my Apple Watch.

Nailed in orders for transcripts from the CC to my dream university already y’all.

Not quite for me! I still have three weeks until I go back. Performing and recording lots in my hometown for these last couple weeks.
I still have a month to go--classes start September 25. But I am looking forward to it. This is my final year, then graduation in June. The classes I'll be taking this coming quarter will be smaller and with a much more narrow focus, and I'll be occupied with my undergrad thesis on Latin American literature.
Hey, it’s been a while since you all went back to school! I know finals were a bit of a time crunch for you too. But weirdly we had them at the same time. My summer break actually started later than usual because winter break was super long last year—like, two whole months!

And now that I’m switching from a different school system: community college and then university, things are a bit different.

This fall, I’m taking a lighter load of classes. I’m only doing electricity/magnetism, PCB design, advanced C++, and computer architecture and assembly. Only one class is in person.

All the general education requirements are covered, and I’m diving into the upper divisions at the 4-year institution I transferred to. But, I might have to tackle the upper-division math and chemistry in the next semester or two.

Do you think you'll go to grad school, or no? I still have some time to decide, but I'm thinking not. I don't really see a purpose at this point. Maybe after a few years of working, if I have a really good reason to, I will.

It's likely that I will, but I know it's not for everyone. I think I will go for a Masters; I don't want to regret not doing so, though I'm also someone who loves being in school and I'm okay extending that experience for a couple more years. But it's also relevant to me since I'm considering work in academia.

I'm not 100% sure yet, but I will have a decision by next year!

I’d totally go for grad school and snag a degree in architecture or mechanical engineering! Grad school has a ton of online options too unlike undergraduate degrees. Also, a friend of mine is diving into an online master’s program in AI/computer science. He’s super flexible with his MBP M4 and even does Ironman triathlons, which makes these online programs a great fit for him.

The only thing is that FAFSA doesn’t give out much aid for master’s degrees, so it’s a must to hunt down scholarships. Seriously, I’ve been on a scholarship hunt this summer, applying to 30-40 scholarships thanks to some amazing people and college counselors who have these awesome, regularly updated directories. No scams here, just reputable organizations like Google, law firms, and other companies, and all the links work! 🔗 If you’re in the US, here are the links below 👇

https://jlvcollegecounseling.com/category/scholarships/ (This one’s run by a former college counselor who had tons of scholarships in all sorts of categories, and she keeps them updated regularly. Plus, there’s a listing every month and every Saturday.)

https://www.thescholarshipcollective.com/ (This is a list of both state-specific and categorized scholarships that gets sent to your email every week and every month. It’s run by a group of students from prestigious 4-year universities who’ve won a bunch of scholarships. (NOTE: Some listings are premium and might cost a little to access, like the one for all 50 states.) They also have their own $500 scholarship where you can write about your dream future.)

For awhile, I had made it my goal to attend the University of Southern California's screen scoring Master's program. A few years ago when I was still in high school, I went out to LA to work with Patrick Kirst who's on the screen scoring faculty there. It seemed he liked the direction I was going, and he hinted that maybe I should apply after undergrad. So I kept that on my radar for a couple years. I think I've since learned I'm less interested in the actual screen scoring aspect of it, and more the music production aspect. So I've taken composition lessons in undergrad where we just work on orchestral MIDI mockups in Cubase.

Ironically though, I'm currently writing a couple film soundtracks--I'm nearly finished with them. I do like it, but only something I do occasionally.

I finished a master's degree two years ago in Medical Informatics - with a late-2020 Intel MBA, so don't worry if you don't have the latest and greatest. I just pushed stuff to Azure if I needed more storage or computing power.

I'm a "mature student" (apparently 😁) but yeah, I'm around half way through my career, so the masters was done just for fun really. I did it full time (1.5 years) as part of a career break.

I'm enjoying this thread because it's full of posts from people just starting out - your education isn't just for fun but also could be the start of something new and exciting. It's fascinating to read, especially from those (such as rm5 above) who aren't just going into IT/AI.

As an aside, a good musician friend of mine has just worked on a film/documentary score. He enjoyed it, and it's fun to brag about, but I think he makes more money doing other stuff.

I think engineering is great, I'm just not that type to be doing that. Failed high school calculus and almost didn't graduate. I think I earned a 20% on my high school physics final, too.

That's the case for most people, unless they are involved with music in another way (namely teaching). I do have a friend who plays the casinos/big venues for a living. Probably at least $1000 per gig, three or so nights per week. Along with some other gigs, I'm sure he does fine. I think his background is in rock/popular music, so that was a pretty easy in for him. He's a pianist, and I think that's his main instrument, but he's also a decent jazz saxophonist, and we've done some duo piano/sax club dates together.

I think that's an awesome and unique way to make a living, but it's not really for me. I think that'd get incredibly stale after awhile. I subbed for him at a huge arena once, and while it was a lot of fun, I just can't imagine doing that all the time.

I've been out playing for nearly 10 years with the top musicians, and even I sometimes feel sick of it and want something different. So I think that's just part of the game, but I have enough variety that that rarely ever happens. That's the thing that no one really tells you that I can't stress enough - if you know how to play an instrument, you can literally play anything. I've heard the excuse over and over, "I'm classically-trained, I can't play jazz" or some variation thereof. Completely invalid, in my opinion. You have to put your mind to it, and more importantly, you have to have fun doing it. I actually haven't sat down and practiced jazz at all this summer. I've played a lot of jazz gigs, but I needed a break from practicing it. Instead, I focused a lot on classical stuff. So sometimes it's about just playing it, and not practicing.

Anyways, back to the actual thread topic... I really don't know the direction I want to go after I graduate. I think it'll be one of those things I just figure out in the moment. The problem I have with becoming a full-time musician is that if that's all I'm doing, I think it would lose its special quality. I'm lucky to get to perform all the time, but I still regard it as a special thing, and I don't want that to get lost and for it to then feel like monotonous work. A friend brought that up to me, and I'd never even considered that aspect. But yes, I think that can certainly happen, and I'm sure it does to a lot of musicians.

I've also done lots of video work, and while I like that, I find it extremely isolating and would never want to do that for a full-time job. I like working around people, and editing video just isn't that. So that leaves my political science classes, which I really enjoy. It's less about the politics aspect, and more about thinking broadly and forming conclusions from lots of different ideas and sources. That seems open to a lot of fields even outside of politics or international affairs.

It's made me very anxious the past year especially. I'm the type of person who needs an entire schedule planned out, with no room for last-minute changes. Unfortunately, that literally can't happen in this case, because I can't plan my life like a schedule.

I do plan my life like a schedule.

I nail it down for every class I finished as a requirement.

and if I have to do schedule changes, I speak with the counsellor to see if that one still meets requirements if it’s a requirement for gen Ed or major if I switch to it, or to maintain full time enrollment.

I don’t like going to school 5 days a week so I usually have a maximum of 3 days of in person classes, I usually only have two.

I'm a student.....again.....briefly.

It's specified "continuing education" that's a requirement for renewing my license to practice my profession.

Exam time is here

Oh hi 👋🏻 there! So is that training from a centre or you’re going back to college to do continuing education for your licence 🪪?

Heard many medical professions have to do that especially for nursing, doctors 🥼 and dentists. 🦷 But I also heard some teachers have to do continuing education too.

Alright everyone let’s discuss some back to school stuff here!

This school year I plan on downsizing how much I will need in my backpack 🎒. During the summer break I got a smaller MacBook Pro 14 inch which is lotta lighter than the windows laptops I loaned from school and the Chromebooks. Glad I done the transition to Mac from Chromebook over the summer! I also am able to lighten my pack with a slim backpack and only carry my MacBook Pro, a folder, my physics notebook and pencil case. Along with a little pouch to carry my Mac peripherals around with a MagSafe charger.

Who else has gone back to school shopping? Any summer break highlights? Only thing I did was the Mac 😂 no clothes cos I rather focus on running errands to go to gym 💪 and necessities like markets.
