I don't think I've ever seen a vole and I've spent my fair share of time in the midwest before. I had to look it up after I made my post, but I wasn't even sure they still made Tootsie Pops. When I still fished regularly, we had either that, Chupa Chups or Dum Dums in our pockets. You didn't want a piece of hard candy floating around in your mouth, but also wanted something you could easily spit out or remove with a free hand and throw it into a small bin on the deck or bag.

Also a decent way to get sugar in your body if you weren't eating anything and were just drinking water from a bottle. I didn't like and still don't like sports drinks. Salt water taffy in the grease paper was also a favorite. Still is.

The last time I was on the east coast around PA, I took it upon myself to eat and package up and send back to the house a lot of handmade candy.

Candy I like now tends to be old fashioned stuff or something very 80s like chocolate covered pretzels.

Another very boring Zenny tangent brought to you by a bottle of Spanish rioja.

Owls are truly beautiful and fascinating animals.

Indeed they are.

Owl

Soft and broad, your lethal flight;
brushed edges mute
your stealth'd approach.

Your eyes huge, to gather light;
your ears askew, to fix upon
small, beating hearts below.

Your taloned feet:
Strong, padded, and clad
in downy chaps; with toes
that shift - from two and two
to three and one.

So that neither
feathers, nor fur, are
slippery enough, to
break your grasp, and
escape your beak.

That poem could very well describe people in my life.

Auto pay on everything except the cell phone bill because it's Verizon. Granted I haven't seen any funny business by them ever.

Back off buddy. He’s my friend.

Wilson....

I was never much a sleeper in my life. I didn't mind the lack of sleep when the kids were born. Though there are days where I'll get into bed and feel every body part ache. Unfortunately, after a life of barely sleeping my brain signals me to wake up every 4-5 hours, compound this with typical men things requiring waking up. Joy...

Also I have heartburn right now, which is... wonderful.

Edit: Three Rolaids and two sleep-aids later. Goodnight 2.0...

Some of my owl shots from a few years back.

Both great shots, but man, that second one is really good, haunting even.
Especially if you are a vole!

It was a tame owl flying between its owners, so not a wild shot. It was a good evening.

Excellent shots, both, and I still love owls.
Thank you kindly.

That's perfectly descriptive... every now and then in my side yard on a winter morning I see in the otherwise pristine snow the unmistakable trail of prey and predator: the hop-hop-hop-WHOMMPFF of an owl strike on a rabbit. Most times there's not even any blood, just the mark of the touchdown and liftoff.

I really should enroll in autopay. I think I was the very last holdout on automatic deposits too.

Today I turn 21. My last milestone birthday. From here on out birthdays are just about getting old.

At least I can finally go to a bar--I've been waiting for this moment for a long time. Time to order me a White Russian :D
You’ve never been to a bar? I used to go from about 14 (18 is the drinking age here).

Happy Birthday. Don’t over do it!

Enjoy your visit to a bar; yes, the legal age here is 18, and I used to go with my parents as a teenager (an under 18 teenager) sometimes and have a coffee with them while they had a drink.

Happy Birthday, and have a good day.

And no: It is not downhill from now on.

I can certainly say that I was a lot happier in my 30s, than I was in my 20s - and that was a period of time that was a lot better than those awful years in my teens, which I would never willingly re-visit, irrespective of how many youth elixirs someone offered me. And I was happier still in my 40s, (than in my 30s), as I felt I had grown into myself and was a lot more comfortable in my skin.

Thank you all :D And that is encouraging to hear, @Scepticalscribe.

My mother always said that her 50s were the most fulfilling in her life, professionally (and, to some extent, personally, although she enjoyed retirement until my father fell ill); she felt that her family were "late developers" and came into their own in middle age, and used to advise us not to be envious of those who peaked physically, or professionally, or psychologically, in their youth.

In fact, she used to say that if you peaked too early, you ran the risk of never feeling the need to open your mind to fresh experiences and new learning, and new ways of thinking and seeing things, from the time you were young, and she used to deplore the number of individuals who had, as she phrased it, "put a padlock on their minds at 18 or 20" and never admitted a single fresh thought or idea since then.

Just for the record, I actually mostly agree with you; not that I didn't like the freedom and general "worry-free" disposition that often comes with the territory of being "young", but getting older also has it's benefits. Drawbacks as well, but the benefits are nice, not going to lie.

In my case though, the old saying "Youth is wasted on the young" does ring somewhat true.

Yes, some people become set in their ways at such a young age. I seem to be at a peak of curiosity now, but I hope it does not diminish so as I get older.

I'll be enjoy youth, but I'm not averse to aging. I'm looking forward to being an old professor surrounded by books and cats :)

Happy birthday! Nah, those annual events are not just about getting old, they're about celebrating for as long as there's daylight before nightfall. I do remember turning 30 though... and at the time I only thought that was getting old because a bratty younger brother gave me a cane, and a cartoon of some little old lady with running shoes brandishing a cane at a would-be mugger. I wanted to brandish the thing at my bro or at least remember to give it back to him when he finally turned 30 himself. Of course I'd forgotten about it by then, dammit. I've long since settled for reminding him once a year that no matter how he tries, he'll never catch up with me. :p

I had an interesting first day as a fully embadged moderator. Here's a summary.

First, I read a post from name redacted that informed me of a confidential matter to resolve. It took me a while, but I finished that.

Next, there were a bunch of unnamed things to read through and decide on their disposition. That was at least an hour.

Mixed in with all this moderator stuff, I was also posting snarky responses on threads, and investigating secret stuff elided to use in some redacted actions I'd need to handle later.

Next I took some time away from the keyboard to make a batch of oatmeal cookie bars, with pecans and dried cranberries. They're still cooling off.

The final work activity was a couple of break-away republic actions that needed to be handled, because @NoBoMac was in a Skype conference with some people who may or may not be dictators. I ended the day by joining @Boyd01 in the woods where we drank some beer, maybe, and scared the wildlife.

Congratulations on the promotion. I expect your mastery of snark to continue, as you moderators these forums while eating homemade oatmeal cookie bars.

I like owls too.

Preparing my 2017 MBA for mind wipe and sale, my eyes said “Nnnnnnooooooo!” to the display today and I have to listen to that. Plus, Safari was just being argh!

Otherwise, a wonderful laptop.

I’ve now fully accepted it’s time for me to leave Apple behind. Struggled with this since late 2016.

Lots more going on, but I’ll leave my thoughts here on the superficial stuff.

@ThisBougieLife Happy Belated Birthday.

@Apple fanboy Beautiful pictures of those owls.
