On my mind: how come sometimes @SandboxGeneral's name is folded in the side panel and sometimes not. Today it's not. Yesterday it was. I had thought it dependent on browser settings but that seems not the case. So what's different today?

Also on my mind, although not related in any way to the above: Why am I suddenly so taken by operas that feature the French Revolution's Reign of Terror and so the guillotine? Last night Dialogues of the Carmelites (Francis Poulenc), today Umberto Giordano's Andrea Chénier. Probably should ask this question in PRSI but I'm about ready to depart that forum again for awhile, speaking of reigns of terror. I miss the implacable calm of @maxsix sometimes. We rarely agreed on anything except apparently the usefulness of a low key approach to dropping incendiary posts into the mix.

I installed Mac OS X 10.4 in a VM to record some video, and my god, I forgot how much I love the Aqua theme. I remember being a bit let down by Yosemite's flat redesign but thinking Mavericks had grown to look dated; I guess I just didn't remember how cohesive the whole look was when it was new.

My favorite UI quirk is how as you resize a window, the metallic texture doesn't distort. Instead, more of the texture is revealed as you drag. Also, the slight gradation in brightness keeps itself centered on resize. It looks so cool.

The thought of retiring has crossed my mind again. To say as little as possible it’s not easy untangling oneself from the business world...nor easily justified. I could travel and do many of the things people typically do but it doesn’t interest me. So going through the process of retiring to sit idle has me fearing regret. On the other hand the pace while satisfying is not as satisfying as it once was...and there’s not much middle ground. I have to think it through. There‘s a balance just not sure where or how yet.

So, the girls and I have spent the afternoon glazing a ham.

Can you do part time, slowly transitioning out of this job? Or is the job all or nothing?

That's a nice looking ham.

Kinda all or nothing. But there’s a solution. I just need to noodle it more.

Thank you. I try staying in shape. 💪
My dad (mid 70’s) finally retired just about the same time as the country went into lockdown.
He hated not being able to go on holiday, play golf or lots of the other things he likes to do.
But fortunately things have eased a little. He is playing golf again and some restaurants are open now.
It was just bad timing. He’s always been a grafter (like me). Part of the problem was he was self employed and he hated seeing the business he had grown just stop. I think it would have been easier if his plan of selling the business to someone who might have had a bit of part time work for him.

But yes many jobs are all or nothing.

This is the unraveling part that will take a long time. Once done some short consulting work might fill the void.

Or who knows, maybe I’ll start a very small lawn care service like the guy did in the Onion Field [no other similarities], but I dont plan to live in Bakersfield.

I think he’ll be fine when he can get back to normal leisure things.
Just a timing thing. Doesn’t help that he doesn’t get on with his wife. She’s a nasty peace of work to be honest.

B&N Criterion sale is on (50% off for every Criterion title).
I bought,
1984, directed Michael Radford
Grand Hotel Budapest, directed by Wes Anderson
Indagine su un Cittadino al di Sopra di Ogni Sospetto (Investigation on a citizen above suspicion) directed by Elio Petri, soundtrack by Morricone, and a movie I will enjoy in its original language.

I have never seen the first of those movies, but thoroughly enjoyed the second (actually, I thought it superb), and, as a postgrad, saw the third, (with sub-titles, naturally, I think on Channel 4), and thought it excellent.

Do enjoy.

I did the opposite. Never saw the second one, saw the first one and third one (of course, it's a classic of Italian cinema...). I heard great reviews of Grand Budapest Hotel, and let me tell you, the Criterion bluray case, it's booklet, and the inserts is the result of a superb, perfectionist effort.

Of note, I watched the first five minutes of "Indagine [...]", the video quality is insane. It looks like a modern movie.

Movies might be on streaming, but sometimes I don't regret spending a dime, or even a small fortune, on amazing, physical productions.

Physical (CD) productions, for me, too, very much agreed.

Is job hunting during covid a lot of fun? No. Are there more opportunities than ever during these times? No. Will I be unemployed until this pandemic is over? Maybe...

So mom and I are finishing up lunch, and she’s been using her iPad a lot.

Instead of asking if her iPad needed charging, I said “Does your iPad need changing?”

😂

Yes, welcome to the work week.

Hope you are all having a nice Monday.
iPads .... Apple quality for those unexpected moments ...

Thank you. 🤗 I hope you have a good week too.

Short work week here. Also, working on staying positive and not reacting negatively: 3 days in so far. 😀
Good for you. Short week? Do enjoy your time off. It was my first day back today. Well in truth I’m never really off 100%.

Cold wet and miserable here. Put the brown bin out (garden waste). Now my warming cup of tea is on my mind!
