I never understood why companies release ugly looking products like Toyota camry's and Sony PS2s. Home appliances could use a lot of style. I heard they do that on purpose to appeal to all people's liking and does not shift towards one taste or the other.

That being said, everyone seems like Apple designs for the most part. In fact they like them so much other manufacturers copy them like the all aluminum design of laptops and all screen design of smartphones.

I recall the days when TV’s or even game consoles were made to look like they were made of wood! Very strange.

Yeah, like the faux wood panel/trim on the Atari 2600. The hell was that about lol

They certainly don't make them "ugly by design", they're generally designed with the "style of the time" design language, there's cost related elements in terms of materials, fabrication complexity, modularity/component sourcing, etc.

Home appliances don't have a ton of need for excessive design, a fridge is a big, metal cuboid, they can style the handle, the surface materials, etc., I prefer them to blend more into the background and let the rest of the house express creativity/design, i.e., the tile, paint / color, decorations and whatnot.

I think part of the issue is they wanted the appliances to suit the style of the day. Then when things changed, you had to update your appliances as they looked dated.
All TV’s were brown faux wood. Then black. Then silver. They want it to look like it needs updating.

Wishing everyone in the path of Hurricane Laura stays safe.

Amusingly, Backend issue with job servers this a.m. prevented me from logging in on time. I knew it was on their end.

The funny part was the head of IT got on my hide again about using a Mac to remote into my work PC. He even went as far as telling me to buy a PC this morning, thinking it was a Mac-centric issue. 30 minutes later I get the call: ”Don’t buy a new computer. It’s a backend issue on our side. Will call you back when you can log in again.”
So I am chuckling about that as I make up the hour plus of lost time. 🙄

Between this and double clicking stuff into oblivion, I‘ll stick with Macs at home, PCs at work.

And I hope everyone here is okay.

It happens but it's only when there's a notable design change, I mean, we have beautiful GE Profile appliances, they're almost 20 years old, they look as new and as modern as the day we purchased them.

I didn't mind when Americans finally decided avocado kitchen appliances (1959-70) were so over. This one you can maybe still lay hands on for only $85 someplace in Brooklyn...

Oh, I remember the era of avocado green appliances and/or gold-colored appliances! Eventually someone decided it was time to bring on the neutral colors.....

Seems to me that the current fashion which will eventually be replaced is the clear trend right now towards grey-and-white....... Grey paint, white (or cream) paint on walls, grey cabinetry, stainless-steel appliances.....sometimes black appliances....

Its not style of the time. It is bland and ugly

I don't see why they are abandoning colors, sure grey-black-white can look sleek but so much of it turns things as lifeless as a grey corporation building with endless similar cubicles. I want to see colors come back like in the 90s. Those colored ibooks still look beautiful and HP had a colorful product line too not sure why it was discontinued...I am afraid it was a failure

I loved the colors of the clamshell ibooks, i had a tangerine one, let a niece have it, missed it and so bought a lime one to replace it..

...and I liked the jewel colors of some of the ipod nanos and shuffles as well.

For the large kitchen appliances, I don't mind the stainless steel or black stuff or combos of those. The grey and cream, I dunno. Not a fan really.

I think a lot of apartment complexes and new condo developments are now painting their units in greys and creams in an effort to achieve a "neutral palette" look so that the residents can move in with whatever they have in the way of furnishings and decorative items and brighten it up to suit their own taste, but even so, it definitely is not appealing to me. Some homeowners who are selling their place and doing a repainting job are also going with this trend, too, I've noticed.....a friend recently put her place on the market and sure enough, it was all freshly painted in greys and creams. Whatever....

Yes, it does rather remind me of sterile office cubicles that are also in greys and creams as well.... Blah!

I wasn't yet into Apple at the time of the bright-colored clamshell iBooks and the gorgeous iMacs, but if I had been, you can bet that I would have had a tangerine iBook or iMac in a heartbeat!

I always chuckle at design conversations in the context of things like phone or computer designs are "bland", when the same people have dwellings that have beige carpet, beige walls, a black pleather sofa. Colors? Our house has Flaming Sword red, Royal Pacific blue, Key Lime green, Dark Espresso brown, Chinese Sunrise yellow, color changes across walls in the same room - we've got an amazing mix of style, color, old, new, custom lighting, 80 year old Asian antiques mixed with contemporary art, a huge collection of original movie posters, Heywood-Wakefield and Herman Miller / Noguchi furniture, our house was featured in magazines, so yeah, we get not being bland :)

Tropics are getting really active, there’s a storm that can become a major hurricane in a couple days. Everyone from Houston to New Orleans should be on alert.

Yes that hurricane Laura looks to be a bad landfall. Hope people take warnings seriously and stay safe.

We're having unrelated but very weird weather up in New York State, almost the whole state is on notice for tomorrow to expect severe thunderstorms, large hail, gusty winds, possibly a few tornadoes as a bunch of unsettled and weakening warm fronts from the south get shoved aside by a large cold front moving through from the west... and then heavy rain and flash flooding on Friday after the t-storms subside. I can't remember a time when the whole state (and parts of Pennsylvania) all had the same severe weather warnings that weren't even associated with remnants of a tropical storm.

Edit: also, I've never seen stuff like this in the NWS' regional forecast discussion in my area:

"An enhanced (3 out of 5) risk for severe storms with all numerous hazards possible, including the risk for 70 mph or higher wind gusts, hail greater than 2 inches in diameter and even a few tornadoes. This is a potentially dangerous setup; now is the time to make sure you are prepared. Have multiple ways to receive watches and warnings, do not get caught unaware outdoors (camping, on a lake, golf course, sports etc). The main timing of the severe storms looks to be about 1-9 PM Thursday afternoon and evening...first developing across the Thruway corridor, then dropping south into the Southern Tier later in the afternoon and eventually into NE PA. Be sure to monitor the latest forecast updates on this event."
Edit: lol and now the power utility just emailed alerts telling us they're prepared to have to work on downed lines tomorrow as this bizarre set of weather moves across the state. I'd like to say I feel reassured. All it really makes me do is decide to definitely stay up for awhile and cook some pasta so i have something to put with veggies tomorrow in a salad if we lose the juice! That and charge up all my Apple gear and top off the battery lantern charges. Gee and we're not even having a hurricane.

I miss my Bondi Blue iMac and wish I would have also purchased a Tangerine one. Also loved the jewel colored Nanos.

Really, I’d love a colorful Mac again.

Very happy with my red SE2.

I don’t mind cream colored interiors as you can always paint or add colorful accents and furniture, but gray is :( cubicle I agree.

Hoping everyone in the path of Hurricane Laura stays safe...

Have personal things on my mind, but right now, sleeping would be great...

I think the idea was to give the impression that the product was classy, or sort of "aspirational"; really upmarket cars, for example, have real wood veneers on the dash.

Actually, I like wood.

To this day, some of the Ruark radio products have a wood veneer, something I find rather attractive.

Specifically on the beige computers, there's a reason why office equipment is beige so frequently. Apparently a German regulations board made a rule about it:
I forget if this is the exact video, but either way it talks about why beige was the answer for computers.

Well I am glad to be back online as m iMac was in the shop for some diagnostics - turned out the ram I bought at the very same Apple reseller/approved repair was defective but the rest is all in top condition (knocks wood). Posting from my phone is just not the same and the couple of times I have gone into the office I have been busy so -- hope to be back interacting with you all again.

Wood is beautiful. But plastic made to look like wood, not so much.

It is such a relief when you get your Mac back isn’t it? I was very happy a few months ago after I got my Mac mini back from repair (having been taken out by an OSX update).
